11 January 2007: Laura Quits Smoking, Self-Help CDs, and DJ Chat-Up Lines

Laura, a member of the show’s production team, reaches day seven of quitting smoking — and the whole show has a betting pool running on when her body will react. Meanwhile, Scott and the team discover the world of Susan Jeffers self-help audiobooks, and gift Scott a rather optimistic CD called “Bay Magnet” designed to improve his pulling power.

The episode kicks off with the team celebrating Laura’s smoking cessation milestone. A sweepstake has been running on the exact time Laura would experience withdrawal symptoms, with Scott predicting 12:30 p.m. — but she actually gets there at 8:30 a.m. during Dom’s news bulletin, which nearly wins the bet for a caller named Ruth from Bangor. Laura then shares an embarrassing story about a DJ who tried to chat her up in a Southampton nightclub using his radio position as a pickup line, leading to a broader discussion about which professions are most successful at pulling (footballers win, apparently, regardless of league level).

The conversation pivots to Laura’s new self-help discovery: Susan Jeffers’ “End the Struggle and Dance with Life” CD, which Laura listens to in the bath with candles lit. Scott plays an excerpt from the CD — a rambling meditation about finding “a secret, unexplored place deep within your being” — that becomes increasingly absurd as Susan describes a metaphorical flood on a New York bus. The team is deeply skeptical of its usefulness.

Not to be outdone, Laura has bought Scott a self-help CD of his own: “Bay Magnet,” billed as a solution for men lacking “luck with the ladies.” The back cover promises to help users “charm women senseless” and “electrify the hottest bands.” Scott is genuinely delighted and plans to listen to it at home, following the instructions to play it every day for 14 days. A caller also rings in to share his own accurate prediction on Laura’s timing.
