23 March 2006: Laura’s Diary Season 4 Finale with Ben

The season finale of Laura’s Diary features a surprise guest: Ben, Laura’s ex-boyfriend from Season 4, who’s flown in to discuss their relationship and relive some of the diary’s most memorable moments.

After reading out the final entry of Laura’s Diary Season 4—a melancholic piece written on the first day of September 1997 about a breakup and feeling lonely and misunderstood—Scott welcomes the episode’s special guests. Mary reads the diary entry with feeling, and then Ben, Laura’s Season 4 love interest and the subject of much of that season’s entries, joins the show via video link from overseas, where he’s been living since the relationship ended.

The conversation explores what it was actually like dating Laura, with Ben describing it as “interesting” and recalling specific moments they shared, including a trip to Skignes. Scott prompts them to recreate a romantic scene from the diary, where Laura had said “I love you” and Ben had responded with what he now reveals was a Star Wars film quote—delivered in a deliberately cheesy way. Ben admits he probably wasn’t consciously aware it was from Star Wars at the time, though the realisation came later.

When asked about the positive sides of going out with Laura, Ben praises her intensity, saying she’s caring and will “treat you like a king.” However, when Scott points out that Ben dumped her, Ben finds himself backed into a corner, eventually admitting it was probably a mistake. The segment wraps with a joke about Ben potentially entering a competition to “win one night with Laura”—an offer he seems to consider before Scott shoots it down.
