20 June 2008: Beccy’s Lying Challenge and Lloyd’s Magic 8 Ball Euro 2008 Predictions

Scott challenges Beccy to persuade a complete stranger to lie for her on the street, while Lloyd returns with his Magic 8 Ball to predict the Euro 2008 quarter-final results. Plus, the team discovers gummy sweets shaped like lighthouses—sweets that look decidedly un-lighthouse-like.

The show opens with a callback to a previous segment featuring an extraordinarily creepy online dating message that the team reads aloud, joking about turning it into a chart hit. The message is then mashed up with Mos Def lyrics to create an oddly hypnotic track.

For “Would I Like To You,” Beccy is sent onto London’s streets with a challenge: she must find a stranger willing to lie for her. The scenario is that she’s cheating on her boyfriend with his best mate, and when the boyfriend calls, she needs the stranger to pretend to be a work colleague. Beccy attempts this with help from Chris (a Radio 1 colleague), and manages to recruit two women who participate in the fake phone call. The women help her lie, though one becomes increasingly evasive when the “boyfriend” (played by Joe Cole) asks specific questions, eventually claiming to be too busy.

The segment sparks debate about whether girls stick together more readily than boys would in similar circumstances, with several callers phoning in with their own perspectives on lying and loyalty.

The show also features breaking news about Jamie Lynn Spears giving birth to a baby girl, named Maddie, leading to speculation and discussion about celebrity baby names. There’s also a lengthy segment about David Hasselhoff’s new social networking site, Danny Howard Daily, complete with games, merchandise, and a “Hassle the Hoff” answering machine where fans leave bizarre voicemails.

Lloyd then appears with his Magic 8 Ball to predict the Euro 2008 quarter-final between Germany and Portugal. The ball’s predictions include “Very doubtful” for Germany winning in normal time and “It is certain” for Portugal winning overall, though Lloyd refuses to predict the exact score (“Better not tell you”).

The episode concludes with a street survey asking people what the “gummy lighthouse” sweets actually look like—a question that results in embarrassed euphemisms and barely concealed descriptions of male genitalia, despite the sweets’ intended lighthouse design.
