13 February 2008: The Mystery Telescope and Forces Sweetheart Plans

Scott discovers a telescope mysteriously positioned on his landing, pointed directly at his neighbour’s bedroom window—and spends the show insisting it’s not his while nobody believes him. Meanwhile, the army gets in touch about his earlier jokes about becoming a Forces Sweetheart.

The episode opens with Scott discussing random objects that have appeared in his flat over time, before revealing that a telescope has now shown up on his landing. The problem: it’s trained on his neighbour’s bedroom window across the street in North London. Scott denies any involvement and runs through the possible culprits—his flatmate, the flatmate’s girlfriend (who’s “quite into astrology”), or his cleaner—but the team remain unconvinced. He argues that he wouldn’t announce it on air if it were actually his, but this logic fails to persuade Laura and the rest of the studio.

The show then pivots to listener emails. Alphi from Peterborough asks for advice about his girlfriend who insists on pursuing singing despite having, by his account, no talent whatsoever. Scott and the team improvise hilariously bad musical performances to illustrate Alphi’s dilemma, and debate whether he should tell her the truth before she auditions for X Factor.

A significant development arrives when a representative from the army emails in: they’re willing to make Scott’s earlier jokes about being a Forces Sweetheart a reality, offering to arrange for him to do the show for troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Scott and the team discuss whether they’re actually up for it. Multiple listeners then write in with personal connections to those deployed, adding weight to the idea. The team seem genuinely interested, though Scott worries about whether their presence would actually be helpful given the dangers involved.

The show also features extended discussion of retro inventions, particularly the Hawaii Chair and Mr. Microphone, with listeners offering to help source a Hawaii Chair from America for Scott, who becomes increasingly obsessed with acquiring one.
