17 July 2007: Flirt Divert and Drunken Answerphone Messages

A feature all about the pitfalls of alcohol and mobile phones — Flirt Divert returns with a fresh batch of cringe-worthy voicemail messages left by people who’ve had a few too many drinks before deciding to call someone they fancy.

The show introduces listeners to Flirt Divert, a public service feature where the team shares the phone number (0370 774914) with callers who receive unwanted attention. If someone isn’t keen on someone’s look, sound, or demeanor, they can hand out the Flirt Divert number instead of their real one.

The episode showcases several hilarious answerphone messages, many left by people who’ve clearly had a drink or two. Highlights include a caller attempting to arrange a “superhero” encounter, someone awkwardly complimenting a girl while accidentally insulting her weight (“I’m not bothered about you being allowed”), and a particularly memorable message left on a car at Morrison’s in Darlington asking the recipient to call back. There’s also a demanding message to someone named Chloe about making the bed, and various other romantic overtures that fall flat.

The best example of why drinking and dialing don’t mix comes from a lengthy, increasingly incoherent message to Emma. The caller, clearly several drinks in, rambles about shifting booties, makes increasingly explicit offers, and keeps saying “Oh yes” repeatedly before the message finally cuts off. The team jokes about needing a “breath analyser for your phone” to prevent drunk dialling, and riff on how people often become more confident (and talkative) the more they drink — though not necessarily more successful in their romantic pursuits.
