27 June 2007: Love Letters from Royston (Spacehog)

Rachel calls in to share embarrassing love letters she received from Royston, the drummer of 1990s rock band Spacehog — who is now married to actress Liv Tyler, currently living in Leeds.

Rachel reveals she dated Royston when they were both around 12 years old back in 1983, and has brought his handwritten love letters to share on air. The letters are hilariously earnest and misspelled, with Royston repeatedly writing “very, very, very” (so many times he notes his arm is getting tired), declaring Rachel “the loveliest, beautiful, smooth kissing, warmest, hugga girl in the whole wide world,” and signing off with multiple kisses. Scott and the team are delighted by the absurdity, joking that Royston clearly had a gift for romance if he could eventually pull a Hollywood actress. The show also discusses Spacehog’s modest chart success (number 29 hit) and riffs on the fact that Liv Tyler apparently now lives in Leeds, leading to much wordplay about “Liv’s in Leeds.” Rachel has also brought her diaries from the same period, which the team tease reading out later in the week — one entry describes how Royston got a friend to ask if she’d “neck” with him after school. The overall tone is affectionately mocking of young Royston’s earnest teenage romance and terrible spelling.
