24 November 2006: Scott Cuts Andy Murray’s Hair for Children in Need

Scott takes on the role of celebrity stylist to cut young tennis star Andy Murray’s hair as a Children in Need fundraiser, attempting his signature Rachel from Friends haircut on the modest 18-year-old British player with mixed results and plenty of nervous chat.

After listeners texted in to raise £10,000 for Children in Need, Scott was given the opportunity to cut the hair of Andy Murray, a rising British tennis player ranked in the world’s top 20. Scott admits he knew little about Murray beforehand and was surprised by the level of media attention at the West End salon, with photographers, BBC News crews, and Scottish press packed into the room.

During the cut, Scott engages Murray in typical salon chat, though he worries about his own lack of hairdressing qualifications and the fact that the Rachel from Friends (circa 1996) is the only haircut he’s confident doing. The conversation covers Murray’s recent visit to the hairdresser, his upcoming match in Aberdeen, and whether he’ll wear a hat afterwards—Scott jokes that if Murray wears a hat outside, it’ll be the true test of whether the cut was any good.

The atmosphere is tense throughout, with PR people, photographers, and TV cameras watching in silence as Scott works. Murray remains modest and good-natured throughout, eventually declaring himself happy with the result. Scott notes that the whole venture was worthwhile regardless of the haircut’s success, since they’ve raised over £10,000 for the charity.

The show also features a mysterious voicemail left on Deb’s phone from an unknown man playing Damien Rice, and coverage of the Channel 4 show Young at Heart, featuring an over-80s choir performing rock songs.
