7 September 2006: Baby Mind Reader Derek Ogilvie Reads Riley’s Mind Live on Air

Derek Ogilvie, the baby mind reader from Channel 5’s TV series, visits the studio to demonstrate his claimed psychic abilities — and Scott brings in a real 14-month-old to test whether he can genuinely read an infant’s thoughts live on Radio 1.

Scott opens by expressing fascination with Derek Ogilvie’s TV show about connecting telepathically with babies and children. Derek explains his method: he claims to receive images and feelings from children’s minds, which allows him to relay detailed information to parents — from mundane preferences like food and sleep positions to supposedly specific details like PIN codes and house alarm numbers. Joe Cole remains skeptical, pointing out that suggestions like “babies like princesses” or “tidy homes” are fairly obvious. Derek counters that his real evidence lies in the specific, unprompted details — things parents haven’t told him.

To test this live, Scott brings in Riley, a 14-month-old boy belonging to Courtney, who works at Radio 1. Derek has never met either before. Working with the baby in the studio, Derek makes several claims: he identifies a rash Riley had on his back three to four weeks ago, mentions that Riley’s bed was recently moved away from a window, notes that Riley’s bottle was changed because he didn’t like the original one, and accurately describes details about Courtney’s own health — including breast issues, nipple problems she had while breastfeeding, lower back pain during pregnancy, shoulder pain on one side, and even details about new carpet in her old flat when she first became pregnant.

Courtney confirms that Derek has gotten remarkably specific details correct — things she says there’s “no way” he could have known without genuine insight into Riley’s mind and memories. She admits to being both “amazed and a bit disturbed” by the accuracy. The reading concludes with Derek promoting his theatre tour in Glasgow on 7 November. Scott and the team remain genuinely impressed, with Joe Cole admitting he is “truly astonished.”
