22 August 2006: Laura the Vigilante Gets Steven Home for Tea

Laura takes to the streets as a self-appointed social vigilante to tackle a pressing domestic injustice: a 15-year-old boy who’s persistently late for his family’s six o’clock dinner.

This episode features “Laura the Vigilante,” a recurring feature where Laura is sent out onto the streets to right perceived social wrongs. Today’s mission: persuade Steven, a teenager who hangs around Starbucks with his friends instead of coming home for dinner, to finally show up on time for his mum.

Steven’s mother has reached the end of her tether. She prepares dinner every single evening at six o’clock—the only time the whole family gets together—but Steven invariably arrives around seven, missing the meal entirely. She’s enlisted Laura’s help to publicly shame him into compliance. Armed with a microphone and a mission, Laura heads to the local Starbucks where Steven and his mates are hanging about.

What follows is classic Laura the Vigilante chaos. She approaches the group and delivers her now-famous line: “Excuse me, yo dudes!” She explains Steven’s situation to his friends, invokes her status as an “actual vigilante,” threatens to “pop a cap in your ass,” and even makes a dramatic public announcement about his dinner negligence. Steven, unsurprisingly, looks distinctly unimpressed by the whole affair and walks off.

The segment ends with Scott and the team debating whether the stunt actually worked or simply mortified the poor lad further. Scott suggests Laura the Vigilante should become a more regular feature, particularly enjoying the moment she “speaks the language” and uses street slang—though her delivery is more awkward than authentic.
