13 June 2006: Lloyd’s World Cup Facts and Pub Challenge

Lloyd, the 10-year-old football expert from an earlier feature, returns to set Scott a challenge: use the World Cup facts he’s taught him to start conversations with complete strangers in a pub.

Scott has been learning about the 2006 World Cup from Lloyd, a young football enthusiast who’s even made it onto the front page of his local newspaper. To test his newfound knowledge, Chopper sets Scott the task of approaching strangers in a pub and discussing football with them, armed with Lloyd’s facts.

Scott attempts the challenge twice. His first conversation with a stranger doesn’t go smoothly — he launches into a stat about there being 27 goals in the tournament so far, but realizes he’s overwhelmed the man by not warming up the conversation first. His second attempt with a regular pub-goer who’s always watching football proves more successful. After some initial small talk about matches, Scott tries out another of Lloyd’s facts, comparing Wayne Rooney to Shrek. The man seems confused by the comparison, and Scott’s attempts to work in other football trivia meet with similarly bemused responses.

By the end of the exchange, Lloyd and Scott are planning to catch the evening’s match (France is playing), and Scott promises to report back on how he’s getting on with his football education the next day.
