Supporting BBC Children in Need
This year, Radio 2’s Sara Cox is putting her body on the line for BBC Children in Need, taking on a huge test of endurance to help raise money for children and young people across the UK.
From the morning of Monday 10 November, Sara sets off from the wild surroundings of Kielder Forest, near the Scottish Borders, and will travel on foot all the way to Pudsey in Leeds, where she’s due to arrive on the afternoon of Friday 14 November.
Five marathons. Five days. One goal.
Sara’s Great Northern Marathon Challenge is exactly what it sounds like:
135 miles on foot, over five consecutive days – the equivalent of five full marathons.
Along the way she’ll cross four counties:
-
Northumberland
-
Durham
-
North Yorkshire
-
West Yorkshire
The route takes her over moors, through forests, along ridges and rolling hills, and past countless villages and towns as she heads south towards Pudsey. Some stretches she’ll run, others she’ll jog or walk, but every single mile is powered by her own two feet. No bikes, no lifts, just determination, blisters, and a big helping of northern grit, all in aid of BBC Children in Need.
Cheering Sara on
Because of the scale of the logistics and to keep everyone safe, members of the public are not being encouraged to run alongside Sara as part of the challenge.
What you can do is:
-
Head out to the roadsides along the route to give her a wave, a cheer and a bit of encouragement.
-
Follow all the action on BBC Radio 2, on the live blog, and on the Radio 2 social channels.
Sara’s final destination is Calverley Golf Club in Pudsey, Leeds, where the official finish line will be. Space there is limited and access is by ticket only, but people are welcome to line sections of the approach to the finish to support her in those last tough miles, and you’ll be able to hear the latest on BBC Radio 2 as she completes the challenge.
