  1. I like Mayo. He's not really an entertainer, but a good radio presenter nevertheless. Especially if you take in mind that he's at Radio 2, where listeners expect different things from presenters than at Radio 1.

That said, Viv, wait 4 weeks and another un-entertainer will do a drivetime show on national radio. I'm amazed that anyone ever really considered putting him there (but I'm sure you know that already ;))

  2. I also personally feel that Greg (although young and pleasant) doesn't come over very "young" to an audience. Scotts pranks and more juvenile attitude (a good thing) surely appeal to the younger crowd far more than Greg's yawnsville show will.

That's what I was thinking. Surely, Scott's show, with prank calls, immature humour and all that, appeals to younger audiences than what Greg does? Innuendo Bingo, the Tap End, all the banter with Chris and Beccy, those bits surely attract teenagers/students rather than more grown up people? Contrary to Greg, who hasn't really much going on on his show that might attract younger audiences.

  3. Well not if he's really signed a new three-year deal. It's BBC Radio 1 we're talking about. Capital may be one of the more respectable commercial radio stations, but it's still commercial radio. Working conditions over there are quite different from the BBC, pressure is much higher, it's all just about profit. So if you can get a new several-year-deal with Radio 1, why go to the commercial sector?

  4. I think it's way too early to tell. 4am will probably be someone who's not on the radar yet. Greg on breakfast, Fearne on 10am, Scott 1pm (if the rumours are true and he'll get a new 3-year contract, he'd be stupid to leave earlier. It's bloomin' R1, world's greatest radio station (and the second biggest in the UK)). Plus, If Greg fails and is sacked early on, Scott might get breakfast for a short term. Because in such a situation, they'd need an experienced professional to save them.

I don't really believe Moyles will stay after breakfast. He'd probably have to take a huge pay-cut - and he'd probably have numerous options on Radio and TV.

  5. Whether you think Greg is made for the breakfast show is irrelevant. Believe me, I'm with you all; he's probably never going to last long in the Breakfast slot because there is nothing substantial about him. However, 1) that can't be an excuse for not giving him a chance to at least try, and 2) he does at least seem to be a genuine radio guy like Moyles and Mills were. He hasn't come from television - he's a radio geek, and radio geeks tend to do better on radio.

Huh... you give people a chance because you think they are capable of doing it, not just because you feel that you have to. And I'm afraid to say that noone apart from one Mr Ben Cooper seems to think that Greg is capable (slight exaggeration alert).

  6. I really dislike women. DJs, celebrities, whatever. They just tend to annoy me by being all famous and fashionable and attractive and all that. Fearne's OK, because I grew up with her on CBBC or whatever. But that's it.

Haha. Fearne, ironically, is one of those women who are incredibly famous and fashionable (I don't want to get into a discussion on "attrative" ;)).

I actually think that Radio 1 could do with a few more female DJs. And I mean, in the weekday daytime lineup, not somewhere at the end of the schedule. There used to be Whiley and Bowman, and Cox on weekend afternoons. Now, there will be Fearne, and that's it. Annie Mac, Edith, Sara, Gemma, Jameela, they are all on some almost-graveyard slots...

  7. Mills had to be replaced eventually, so it actually makes sense to do so now and to give James time to start really filling his boots. He's still around so it's not all bad, but James is the future of the station amongst other young presenters and if they keep Mills going and going, James will be 30-35 by the time he even gets an opportunity and they'll have no one else to fill the role.

You explained Ben Cooper's reasoning perfectly well there, Mitchell. To me, it seems dead certain that Greg will get Breakfast by 2014 at the very latest.

The thing is, though, I can't see him succeed. He may be a good presenter, but he's nowhere near as outstanding as Moyles is, or Mills, for that matter. Unless he will get a proper co-host - not a sidekick à la Dave, or on-air producers - he'll be a massive failure.

Of course there is a time for Mills/Moyles to leave, but that time is when you have a capable replacement. I'm sure Ben Cooper believes Greg is capable. But I don't agree.

  8. It IS a slap in the face. I agree. i won't be able to listen to most of this. Ben cooper is a prick, imo. james is younger, and it fits in wiv radio one's yoof obsessions. Assholes. Just blast the station into space next.

tbh that's what Cooper is doing. Circumstances for Radio are getting more and more difficult by itself. Then there is Greg, who's just not up to it and will deliver a ratings disaster. I guess he and Cooper will be out by 2015 after having failed completely.

  9. Clear hint there that Greg James will be the next man on breakfast. Wondering whether Ben Copper seriously is unable to find someone better, because Greg is alright, but never in a thousand years will be be able to handle a breakfast show. I find him rather boring.

Shame to see Scott being pulled away from drive. I assumed his ratings were rather good, so he doesn't really deserve being demoted. I sincerely hope that he finds a great opportunity for a career after Radio 1.

Personally, I won't bother tuning in to Radio 1 often. Radio 1 without Moyles, Whiley and Mills on daytime won't be my cup of tea, so good riddance, I think, puts it quite well.

  10. The massive let down is that dubstep will be everywhere. Well, maybe not in the Rock and Punk shows. But everywhere else. As if nothing else was going on in the world of music.

Also, I like how the Guardian put it: "desperately trying to keep up with the latest musical fashion, but always getting there a few years too late." Now that dubstep is everywhere (including the mainstream), why dedicate the whole specialist output to it?

  11. Sort of sad to see Jules, Giles and Fab&Groove go, they seemed to have been there forever and belonged to the R1 schedule as long as I'm listening. Although I didn't ever really listen to their shows, so I'm not that affected. I am not really bothered by their replacements either, and I probably won't ever hear their voices...

The only one I am going to miss is Kissy. I found myself listening to his shows using Her Majesties iPlayer from time to time; the only night-time show i really ever listened to. I really like his style: positive, energetic, witty. I can see that the stuff he was playing isn't really progressive music, but it sounded just great. Shame he's leaving.

  12. I'm actually doing it the other way roung: whenever Fearne's away I'll be listening to Radio 1, but when Fearne is on, It's Laverne or the iPlayer. Have to say Annie is my favourite option to cover for Fearne, she's entertaining without overhyping everything the Cotton way...

  13. Haha...okay, I see what you mean. Just scrolled back to the Sunday morning shows on the live feed (1Xtra takeover or whatever that is called nowadays). There are just blank squares in the live feed. That clearly needs some work. I guess that will be a problem with all pre-recorded shows as well (actually, who needs them, anyway? ;))

  14. Can something be easily done so that can be achieved? Can they set some text up that appears even if the staff aren't there?
I assume that you will need staff to put things up there. What they could do is build a litte piece of software for that sole purpose - a little Ruby on Rails application or something, where you have a window in which a producer can write a short message or something, and it will then appear in the live feed on the website. Easy to code, might not be that easy to integrate...
  15. It's looking really good, but I'm sorry to say it's a usability nightmare. I don't like the javascript popup things that appear when you click on an item in the live feed. Also, I don't see why you need messages in the live feed.

On the lower part of the website, there are just images, no text (alright, text appears when you put the mouse over an image). But I'd like to know what's behind those images without putting the mouse over all of them.

On the current website, you have a box for videos, one for clips, you know what is what. the new page doesn't show you until you hover it. That's uncomfortable. Some sort of structure would be nice. On the beta site, images from the studio, messages, clips, all that stuff is in the same place, has a square image, there is no order. one massive chaos of a website.
