Paddy McGuinness was back in Salford for his Sunday show, opening with his weekly "radio station sweep" round the BBC network and joking about Radio 2's Michael Ball being off again, with Angela Griffin covering.
The main topic was sparked by Paddy finding his opticians shut for lunch, prompting him to ask listeners what old high-street habits they'd like restored. Suggestions poured in via WhatsApp and email, including pubs closing between 3pm and 5pm, shops shutting on Sundays, town centre clock towers, cinema intervals with block ice cream, seven-inch singles, Woolworths pick 'n' mix, physical gig tickets and the plastic clip on bread bags. Paddy also ran an extended debate on why butcher's sausages are bent, with theories from listeners about skin, tying in links of three, and cooking methods.
Paddy's Timewarp saw listeners asked to finish a Young Ones quote, with the answer confirmed and a tribute to "the late great Rik Mayall". A new segment, Zen 10 – ten seconds of relaxing sound, described by Paddy as "not very relaxing" – debuted with waves, and listeners were invited to suggest next week's sound.
In The Weekest Link, Karen and Mark (a postman from Blackpool) competed on questions about the week's news and pop culture. Karen scored four out of seven; Mark also reached four before missing the final tiebreaker question, handing Karen the win of a Paddy pen and a Radio 2 smart speaker.
There was also a mention that Owain Wyn Evans is preparing a 400-mile, five-day cycling challenge across four nations for Children in Need, with hopes of getting him on the show for tips next week. Happy 60th wedding anniversary wishes went to Janice and Robert Balsall.
