Scott Mills leaves BBC and Radio 2 Breakfast Show

Scott Mills has left the BBC and is no longer presenting the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, the corporation has confirmed.

The BBC said in a statement: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.”

In a message to staff, BBC Director of Music Lorna Clarke said: “I wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the Breakfast show, and the BBC. I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock.”

She added: “Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programmes on R1, 5Live, R2 and TV. I felt it was important to share this news with you at the earliest opportunity.”

Clarke said the news would also come as a shock to listeners, adding: “I will update everyone with more information on plans for the show when I’m able to. While I appreciate many of you will have questions, I hope you can understand that I am not going to be saying anything.”

News of Mills’ departure led the 12:00 bulletin on Radio 2. At the start of his programme, Jeremy Vine said he was “taken aback” by the news.

He told listeners: “Obviously, I was taken aback by that opening story to the news. I had not heard anything about it until 17 minutes ago, when it was on the BBC website, and I only had the information that was given to you in the bulletin, I have nothing more, that it was allegations about Scott Mills’s personal conduct, which have led to him being sacked. I have no more than that.”

Mills, 53, took over Radio 2’s flagship breakfast programme in 2025 after replacing Zoe Ball. At the time, he described the appointment as a “lifelong dream come true”.

He said: “It feels ever since recording my first shows as a kid for an audience of one, my mum, all roads since have led to this amazing opportunity. It really is a lifelong dream come true to follow in the footsteps of Sir Terry, Chris and Zoe to be the new presenter of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show.”

Speaking on air when the move was announced, he added: “Safe to say we’re going to miss [Zoe] massively in a morning, but she 100 percent deserves a lie-in. And, as you’ll have heard in the news, it’s been announced that I am taking over the Breakfast Show. What? This is a huge honour, to walk in the footsteps of Sir Terry, Chris Evans and Zoe.”

His final programme aired on 24 March. Signing off, he told listeners: “I’m getting everything mixed up today,” before adding: “I should probably go, I’ll try again tomorrow.” The following day he was replaced on air by Gary Davies.

His departure comes just weeks after he was unveiled as one of the hosts of The Detour, a spin-off of Race Across the World, alongside former contestant Alfie Watts. He had also been due to front the BBC’s Eurovision coverage this year after unveiling the UK’s entry last month.

The Daily Mirror reported his dismissal followed an allegation relating to a relationship more than ten years ago, but the BBC has not publicly commented on the nature of the matter.
