5 November 2025: Dame Mary Berry on Baking, Freezers & Fanny Craddock

Mary brought her famous chocolate cake, the same one on the cover of her new book Mary 90.

“It’s Wednesday morning, halfway through the week — and yes, Ellie, there’s a lot of foot chat today.” — Scott Mills

“I’m sorry, I know you’re the sexiest man alive, but keep those trotters enclosed, please.” — Tina Daheley

“Mary Berry invented frozen food, and the avocado. Didn’t you, Mary? Oh, yes, I did, yes.” — Scott & Mary Berry

🌕 Midweek Madness & the Beaver Supermoon

Wednesday’s Scott Mills Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 began with Scott’s rallying cry: “You’ve made it to the midweek point!” The team were bright and giggly — particularly Tina Daheley and Ellie Brennan — as they discussed the night’s Beaver Supermoon. “It’s the biggest moon of the year,” Scott explained, before playing what he called “sexy music” to introduce a very different topic: Jonathan Bailey, crowned Sexiest Man Alive 2025.

Tina and Ellie remembered the Bridgerton star’s studio visit: “He took his shoes off!” Tina shuddered. “Keep those trotters enclosed!” Scott dissolved into laughter as Ellie added, “Jo Whiley does her show barefoot — but she’s allowed!” The trio descended into chaos, declaring a “No Naked Feet” rule after hearing from listeners who’d seen people cutting toenails on flights. “Get them off the flight!” Tina gasped. It was one of those classically unhinged early-morning Radio 2 chats that listeners love.

🎆 Bonfire Night & Firework Videos

As Guy Fawkes Night approached, Scott delivered his annual rant about filming fireworks:

“Are you ever going to watch that back? Be honest.”

This year, however, he promised redemption: “If you film your fireworks tonight, tag @BBCRadio2 — because I’m going to watch them all!” Ellie teased, “You’re going to have the best night of your life.” Listeners across the UK sent in texts, including one from Stephen in Wokingham, who admitted, “We always video them — and never watch them again.”

Later, Bishop Nick Baines joined for Pause for Thought, reflecting on the real meaning of Bonfire Night:

“We’re actually celebrating the burning of a Roman Catholic and thinking it’s funny. History is always more complicated.”

Scott thanked him warmly, calling it “a proper Wednesday brain stretch.”

🎶 The Easiest Quiz & Gen Z Mayhem

The Easiest Quiz on the Radio featured Ellie from Oxford, a 23-year-old funeral director just back from maternity leave. When Scott asked, “What noise does a firework make?” she nervously answered, “Boof!” and the studio erupted. Ellie then confessed to “baby brain” and was teased for saying “to f… holiday” when asked why someone might go to an airport. “That’s classic Gen Zed,” Scott laughed, before Ellie redeemed herself with an impressive 18 points, becoming Streaker of the Week.

Listeners corrected Scott afterwards: “It’s antiperspirant, not deodorant!” He defended her: “Give the child a break — she was born in 2002!”

🎄 Kylie’s Festive Surprise

At 8:10, Scott’s “pop pager” went off: “There’s a pop emergency!” Moments later, he revealed the news — a live call from Kylie Minogue.

“You have magical powers,” Kylie told him. “It’s the 10th anniversary of my Christmas album, so I’ve done a new festive track called XMAS!

Scott premiered the song live on air, the first play anywhere in the world. Kylie joked about recording it “on a boiling hot day in June” using a Christmas stocking from her CBeebies Bedtime Story appearance as her only decoration. “We’ll do the dance when I come in!” she promised.

Listeners flooded the text line: “It’s already stuck in my head!” said Claire from Staffordshire. “Christmas starts now,” added Adrian from Cumbria.

🍰 Dame Mary Berry on Baking, Freezers & Fanny Craddock

At 8:40 came the week’s big guest — Dame Mary Berry, radiant in pink. Scott called her “the true definition of a national treasure,” and she replied, “Lovely to be here at this early hour!”

Mary brought her famous chocolate cake, the same one on the cover of her new book Mary 90. “It’s cherry jam in the middle — I didn’t make the jam, just bought it,” she admitted cheerfully. She reminisced about teaching Britain how to use freezers in the 1960s:

“People didn’t know how long to keep food frozen. They used to shove things in and hope for the best!”

Scott joked that he could “only imagine the perfection of Mary Berry’s freezer.” Mary revealed she batch-cooks on rainy days and labels everything — “Otherwise I forget what’s in there!”

She also confessed: “I love cabbage more than kale. Kale’s a bit much, don’t you think?” and laughed about her childhood nickname, Scruffy. “It was wartime! I wore my brother’s jumpers.”

Her new BBC Two series, Mary at 90, features guests including Gabby Logan and Jamie Oliver. “Jamie was the one who got the young people cooking,” she said. Scott asked if she ever cheats in the kitchen — “Of course! Who’s got time for puff pastry?” Mary laughed.

She left to applause, with Scott declaring, “She invented frozen food and the avocado — confirmed!”

🤝 Handover with Vernon Kay

Vernon burst in just after 9:30 shouting, “Bonfire Night!” before teasing, “You know Mary Berry once invented the Wellington boot, right?” Scott shot back, “Stop it, she brought me cake!” The pair ended the show howling with laughter, previewing Cat Burns as Thursday’s guest and debating how long fireworks videos should really last.
