💬 “I’ve never even been on the radio in 69 years… so I wrote you a poem, Scott.” – Brenda from Stratford-upon-Avon
💬 “Strictly, if you’re the last award – just keep it trim.” – Joel Dommett
💬 “We need the tarpaulin… it’s Jamie Oliver!” – Scott Mills
Midweek energy and a lot of staplers
Scott opened Wednesday’s show still in recovery mode from Radio 2 in the Park, joking about “Chelmsford throat” and calling for morning scarves from listeners. A new mystery emerged: why are there so many staplers in the Radio 2 studio? Scott counted nine within sight, with Sarah Cox blaming Jeremy Vine and Jeremy pointing the finger at Rylan.
Listeners joined in with their theories, and Scott promised to investigate further: “If you need anything stapling, you know where I am – but why so many?”
Tina Deheley: class rep revealed
A big moment came when newsreader Tina Deheley admitted she’s just been appointed class rep at her daughter’s school. Cue congratulations, gentle teasing, and plenty of parent-listener advice:
-
“Best bit of advice I ever got – you don’t have to like the parent just because your child is friends with their child.” – Michelle in Somerset
-
“Beware, Tina – this term is the busiest. Christmas dates will finish you off!” – Sam from Westcliff
Tina described it as “like organising a hen do” alongside her BBC shifts, while Scott joked she’d been “headhunted for the role” and might now be “queen of the parents.”
Pause for Thought: Pride and Prejudice
Writer Ramona delivered a reflective Pause for Thought tied to the 30th anniversary of the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice. She spoke about validation, rejection, and self-worth, quoting poet Hafiz: “I wish that I could show you when you are lonely or in darkness the astonishing light of your own being.”
Scott praised her words: “You write these so beautifully – thank you so much.”
The easiest quiz on the radio: Brenda’s big moment
Brenda from Stratford-upon-Avon made her radio debut at 69, ahead of her 70th birthday, and even wrote Scott a special poem:
“I’m on the radio with the lovely Scott Mills,
I’m doing the quiz, oh what thrills!
I hope it’s easy, well that’s what they say,
Otherwise, it will not make my day.”
Despite some “erms” and VAR slow-mo replays, Brenda charmed everyone: “Oh Scott, I’ll take that to my grave – thank you!”
Joel Dommett: National TV Awards night
With the NTAs happening tonight, Joel Dommett joined live, sharing a peek into rehearsals from his posh London hotel (“There’s a chandelier above my head – but no, it’s not my house!”).
He opened up about the pressure of hosting the NTAs’ 30th year:
-
“It feels prestigious – Trevor McDonald did it for 13 years. I just don’t want to mess it up.”
-
On Ant & Dec’s winning streak: “I can’t see the streak ending – they’re world class.”
-
On Strictly speeches: “If I’m far away, keep talking. If I’m nearby – wrap it up.”
Scott also reminisced about his own NTA presenting days with Sara Cox, recalling how “Barry from EastEnders blocked our live ITV2 shot.”
Jamie Oliver: food, fun, and a Radio 2 tarpaulin
Later, Jamie Oliver arrived with what Scott called “an absolute feast – we’ll need the Radio 2 tarpaulin out.” Jamie lived up to his larger-than-life reputation, chatting about food, family and the return of the much-debated Turkey Twizzlers.
Scott admitted he normally refuses food gifts in the studio: “You don’t know what they’ve done to it – but it’s Jamie Oliver, so we’re eating it.”
Expect plenty of crumbs, laughs, and culinary chaos when Jamie’s around.
Blame Me takeover
Still struggling with his voice, Scott handed over the traditional “Blame Me” jingle to listeners. Gary in Bradford eventually nailed it after an amusing false start: “It’s me, Gary!” – quickly corrected to the proper “Blame Me!”
