Radio 2 in the Park afterglow
The Chelmsford weekend was still dominating the breakfast chat. Scott’s voice was “very deep, very Wild West” after all the shouting, prompting Owain Wyn Evans to quip it was giving “early voiceovers: ‘Get out of my pub!’” Scott insisted, “Yesterday, all I drank was herbal tea… but I’m going to get accusations of having a big night out.”
Owain got his own round of applause for turning up with a full “Quints” drum rig – five marching drums strapped to his chest. Scott laughed: “Playing all five of them drums with such skill… wow!” and Owain replied, “It’s just a standard Sunday for me.”
Then came Scott’s surreal backstage moment: about to introduce Olly Murs, he was pulled into the singer’s full-band ritual. “For three minutes, I felt a bit like a pop star. Thank you, Olly Murs, and thank you to his band.”
Listeners: “Scott was the highlight”
Texts and voice notes poured in praising the weekend. Kelly from Bristol gushed: “You were amazing, Rylan was amazing, all the DJs, all the acts – absolutely brilliant. Thank you, Radio 2.”
Another listener admitted abandoning her friends to elbow through the crowd just to film Scott DJing: “Honestly, the highlight was watching you. We booked tickets the moment they went on sale because I said I’d fight to the front to see you.” Scott laughed but confessed he was “blown away” by the praise.
Good Morning Minute chaos
As always, the “Good Morning Minute” rattled through dozens of shout-outs:
-
Arthur, 13, celebrated his mum catching a Def Leppard guitar pick.
-
Emma, 51, admitted she was “quite frankly terrified” before cycling to work for the first time.
-
Teddy in Stevenage turned 11 and opened his presents with Oasis the cat watching on.
-
Dancing Glenda from Lincoln recovered from the festival with “crumpets before work in the real world.”
Scott barely kept up, laughing: “I know I’ve run out of time but I can’t stop now!”
The easiest quiz on the radio
Chris from Swindon, nominated by his wife Wendy, took on the quiz. When Scott asked him to name something bigger than a caterpillar, Chris confidently answered “a big worm.” Cue chaos.
Scott: “You could have said house, car, jumbo jet… but you said big worm.”
The quiz itself cut in: “A big worm might not be bigger than a big caterpillar.”
Scott finally gave in: “After Radio 2 in the Park, I can’t deal with this. My head is a mess.”
Chris finished on nine points, setting what Scott called “a fairly low bar for the week.”
Pause for Thought
Trey shared a thoughtful reflection, recalling his old cross-country coach’s advice: “Stop watching your feet. Look up to the horizon.” He tied it to faith and perspective: “Up hearts! It breaks me out of the gridlock… not to ignore challenges, but to catch sight of another dimension of life.”
Scott responded warmly: “Love your outlook on life. Exactly, Trey.”
Other bits of gold
-
Aggressive Chelmsford wasps: Scott moaned, “Once you’re the target, they don’t move on. I had one around me for half an hour!”
-
TV chatter: Miriam Margolyes and Jamie Oliver are on this week, plus rumours of a new James Corden/Ruth Jones project (not a Gavin & Stacey return).
-
Nostalgia nod: Auntie Mabel and Pippin (“Come Outside”) cropped up in quiz chat about planes.
