Day 4 of Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2025

Big Weekend 2025 had it all: secret pop star sets, unplanned nudity, emotional proposals, and presenters clinging to reality by a thread.

🦘 Rickie and Melvin’s naked Wombat invasion

The Wombats’ set got a surreal twist when Radio 1 legends Rickie and Melvin stormed the stage in full-on mascot suits. But the real headline? “Apparently they weren’t wearing any clothes under the costume.”

Yes, you read that right. No clothes. Just sweatiness inside fibreglass fur. “We should’ve known it was Melvin from the thighs,” one presenter joked.

The result? Giant wombats, possibly nude, dancing in front of thousands.
This wasn’t just a cameo — it was mascot madness at its unhinged finest.

🔥 Ed Sheeran’s ‘secret’ set caused mass sprinting

What do you do when Ed Sheeran shows up unannounced for a surprise set? You run. “It’s your favourite ginger!” came the cry, as the crowd legged it towards the tent like it was Glastonbury gates at dawn.

But while festivalgoers got up close with the superstar, Radio 1 hosts were less thrilled: “We didn’t get to see it. We’re fuming.”

Ed’s acoustic pop-up turned the park into a frenzy — and the behind-the-scenes jealousy was very real.

🌳 The tree that launched a photoshoot

You know it’s been a long weekend when a tree becomes the highlight of your day.

Sam forced Danni into an impromptu photoshoot at Liverpool South Parkway Station, purely because the foliage was “stunning.” “It was like we were on our holidays,” Danni said, semi-sincerely.

But the glamour didn’t last long — Danni then spilled a full cup of tea on his crotch in a taxi. “I’ve got a fresh pair of pants on today, guys,” he proudly announced on air.

The resilience? Iconic.

🍦 Ice cream chaos: AJ Tracey & Aitch go undercover

Greg James pulled festival strings in true Greg fashion — by turning AJ Tracey and Aitch into ice cream men.

Disguised with dodgy moustaches, aprons, and zero subtlety, the pair dished out frozen treats to fans who instantly clocked them.

AJ: “Where’s my ice cream? Gimme a Flake.”
Aitch (deadpan): “If I wasn’t rapping, I’d be a bum.”
AJ: “I love arguing with people. I wanted to be a lawyer.”

This is what happens when you let rappers near a Mr Whippy van.

💍 A surprise proposal… and some on-air dumping

In a Big Weekend first, one listener dropped to one knee next to Rickie & Melvin at the Radio 1 photo booth. “She said yes!” screamed the crowd — and likely a few Sugababes fans in the vicinity.

Ori declared it a landmark moment. Sam and Danni? Less so. “If someone proposed to me at a festival… dumped.” “There are levels to this.” “At least Rickie and Melvin now have to DJ the wedding.”

Romantic? Yes. Divisive? Also yes.

🪥 Toothbrush intimacy we didn’t ask for

After a weekend of no boundaries, Sam and Danni found themselves brushing their teeth together in a hotel bathroom. “It was lovely… until we started brushing our tongues and both just gagged.” “There’s something weird about hearing your friend spit in a sink.”

They woke up together. They brushed together. They gagged together. That’s Big Weekend bonding.

❓Yesterday’s Quiz

Dean McCullough tried to keep things on track with “Yesterday’s Quiz” — but one very hungover contestant had other ideas. “Wait… have we not started?” said Ashley, halfway through the quiz.

Dean forgot to start the music, talked over the dinger, and handed out a sympathy point for effort: “I’m just giving you a point because it’s Bank Holiday Monday.”

Ashley was still tipsy from “spicy margarita day drinking.” Dean was barely holding it together.

🧃 Tired presenters completely lost the plot

The final day saw Sam and Danni absolutely spiralling.

  • They did a full photo shoot with a tree.

  • Danni spilled tea on himself and had to change trousers.

  • They forgot what they were saying mid-sentence.

  • Richie Anderson from Radio 2 literally offered them paracetamol.

“I don’t know what’s going on anymore,” Danni muttered — pants freshly changed, dignity long gone.
