Zoe Ball is expected to return to Radio 2 in September after taking an unexpected period of leave in August.
Scott Mills surprised listeners by appearing as the cover presenter earlier this month, announcing to listeners: “Good morning. You weren’t expecting me were you? Welcome to Monday, it’s Scott Mills.
“If you set your alarm every morning to go off at 6.30 and normally Zoe comes on please do not freak out. You have not overslept”.
Explaining he would be covering the show for some time, he added: “I’m sending you all my love Zo’, as are the team.”
The radio broadcaster had only returned to her show on Monday August 5 after a holiday.
It is Scott’s debut on the Radio 2 breakfast show, with DJ Spoony covering the afternoon programme. He is currently scheduled on mornings until September 6, with Zoe Ball back on September 9.
A spokesperson for the BBC explained: “Zoe is taking some time off and will return in September”.
Earlier this year, Zoe took some time off from her show following her mother’s Julia cancer diagnosis in February, and her subsequent tragic passing just a few months later.
“Thank you to everyone who sent kind messages, cards & flowers,” Zoe wrote in a post to fans at the time.
“Big love to the many of you who have shared with us about your own loss and heartbreak, to those battling with cancer or looking after loved ones affected by cancer.
“We wish you all the strength and love. And of course the humour you need to keep going. Some days it’s so hard to be brave.”
