Scott Mills has presented his first Radio 2 breakfast show since joining the station in 2022.
Mills unexpectedly appeared on Monday’s programme as Zoe Ball takes some time off.
Ball was missing from the morning programme on Friday with Gaby Roslin sitting in. On Thursday she had told listeners: “See you at dawn”.
Now it’s expected Scott will be presenting the show for several weeks, with DJ Spoony covering afternoons.
He told listeners: “Good morning. You weren’t expecting me were you? Welcome to Monday, it’s Scott Mills.
“If you set your alarm every morning to go off at 6.30 and normally Zoe comes on please do not freak out. You have not overslept”.
Explaining he would be covering the show for some time, he added: “I’m sending you all my love Zo’, as are the team.”
She had been coming to terms with the loss of her mum suddenly in April, just 12 weeks after receiving a cancer diagnosis.
A BBC spokesperson said: “Zoe is taking time off and will return in September”.
The presenter has become one of the few DJs to present both breakfast shows on Radio 1 and Radio 2.
He shot to fame in 1998 when Zoe Ball fell sick on his fourth day of presenting early breakfast, causing him to present a five-hour programme.
