  1. Think it's a shame the Phil and Alice show has ended so soon, it was really good and had great features like the Lolz Lounge and the Bedroom Parties- it's been cut down in its prime. It wouldn't be as bad if Phil had carried on doing the show solo, but the fact that he's been binned off completely and demoted to 1 hour a week is terrible. I'm wondering why they didn't just give Huw the 10PM show anyway, I'm sure they trialled him at the time, then settled on Phil and Alice instead- then replaced them with him a year and a half later!

Edith leaving was predictable, but its a shame the Review Show went with her. Does Dan and Phil moving mean the request show's been binned off as well? Oh well, at least they're only on for one hour once a week (but I would have put them on a Wednesday instead, in the old Matt Edmondson Show slot, because to some people Dan and Phil may be vaguely classed as "comedy"). Would've left R1 Stories on Monday and put The Surgery on a Tuesday as well.

Not sure whether Dev's show being given an extra hour is good or not- he's just got off earlies and now he has to get up earlier again (although I guess it's still later than he used to be on), plus he has an extra hour to fill, which I think he might struggle with.

Looking on the bright side of all of this, when I heard Chris Smith say "Radio 1 has announced schedule changes", my heart skipped a beat. It was such a relief to know that Scott's still on, I was worried for a second!

They trialled Huw in the gap October - December 2012 when Grimmy left to do Breakfast and Phil & Alice started in January of last year. The changes also mean that the station will have no Scottish presenters from September which coincidently is the month of the Independence Referendum.

I'm just glad that Scott and Greg's futures on the station are secure for a wee bit longer!

  2. Some pretty big changes here.

Phil & Alice's split is big news but hopefully they will get more cover shows alongside Dev during daytime. Huw's move to weekday evenings will mean the end of him covering Scott/Greg/Zane's shows so Phil & Alice are in a good position.

Not massively keen on Dan & Phil's current show. It's just requests and silly features that really don't need to be aired so I think it's best it's being cut down.

Sad that Jen/Ally/Edith/Nihal etc are leaving. However Jen has BBC3 (for now), Nihal has BBC Asian Network (same time as Fearne's show) but unsure what Edith and Ally will do next.

It seems odd that Phil T and Huw are both presenting separate shows but both focussing on new music? Why not have them co-host?

Also evenings and overnights are more streamlined which means that from 2200-0400 all shows will become 3 hours in length as opposed to 2. Toddla T, Benji B and Annie Nightingale, Friction and B Traits gave been reshuffled.

    Friction - 0100-0400 - Monday

    Annie Nightingale - Tuesday - 0100-0400

    Benji B - Wednesday - 0100-0400

    Toddla T - Thursday - 0100-0400

    B Traits - Friday - 0100-0400

  3. Chappers was back on the show today. Didn't get chance to listen but will listen back soon. Will be good to hear him and Scott back together again.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b043kj9m

It was excellent! I listened live and a lot of people were WHOOOO-ING him on Twitter. He was back as "90's music specialist" and was on for a good 20 minutes or so. It would be good if Beccy returned for a part of the show just like Mark did today. I really miss hearing Beccy on the radio!

  4. Does anyone remember what show of Scott's had the cleaner come into the studio mid-link (in August or September I think) and Scott found it hilarious? Greg did the same to Fearne this morning and this reminded of the time when the cleaner changed the bin. Thank you!

  5. Sorry to bump this up, because I believe it is not good forum etiquette, but does anybody know which show this was/ around what time last year whooing started? It's interesting to hear how it's evolved since I first heard it in about October.

I can't put an exact date on it but it's been, from what I can remember well over a year. Scott and Chris may have been WHOOOO-ing well before but most certainly ramped up a gear since from what I can remember after Christmas 2012 and like what Harry Smyth said there have been some fantastic WHOOOO's! A listener Joe phoned up the show in March and createda game whereby each person has to come up with the obscure 'who's' and has me in stitches everytime. Since then, I've been WHOOOO-ING everything that is a bit "out of target reference".

  6. I was wondering when Fearne would take another week off seeing as she's been on air for a full 2 weeks and next week would make it 3! :)

But it'll be wonderful to hear Annie on. I really enjoy when she covers. Same can't be said for Huw though. I just can't listen to his shows and when I know he's covering Scott, I don't make it through the first three songs and switch off after Newsbeat. Personally, I would have put Dev on Scott's show on the Tuesday and put Huw on all week on covering for Greg.

  7. I'd definitely agree with this and I assume the listening figures would too. If you look at the Radio 1 YouTube channel, the content generated by Scott's show (innuendo bingo, Chris' interviews etc) generate more views than any other. If this online Radio 1 TV channel is launching this year then I imagine Scott's output will be crucial to its success. Plus, his podcast allows kids who are in school when he's on air to listen to the show on a daily basis. If they wanted to get rid of Scott (without using age as the reason), they'd have to show that his output isn't appealing to the demographic. It still clearly is.

The main difference between Scott and, for example, Grimmy is that I think Scott doesn't try too hard when appealing to young people. It's a demographic he appeals to anyway. You only have to look at his music taste (which he describes himself as being similar to "a thirteen-year-old girl") to know that. Then I listen to Grimmy's show and it feels like they are trying to aim their show at young people. Teenagers don't like to be talked to like teenagers. That's where I think Scott's show hits the balance perfectly. His show doesn't feel aimed at young people specifically but he talks about things young people are interested in.

I think that if they were to let Scott go now because of his age it would cause real uproar. You only have to look at the comments on anything Radio 1 post on Facebook to see the impact that Moyles leaving had on the station. I've been listening back to a lot of old Moyles podcasts recently and, towards the end, his output was very much out of target. He was referencing 80s radio, he had Roy Walker appearing on a daily basis (who wouldn't have even been on TV in the lifetime of many in the target audience) and Keith Chegwin was making regular appearances. I adored Moyles' show when it was on the radio but in terms of it appealing on Radio 1, it came to an end at the right time. Scott s nowhere near that yet. I think they'll let Scott's show come to a natural end, whenever that may be and whenever Scott wants it to be.

Scott's show is as you said on point at the moment and he announced on Friday that the Scott Mills Daily has been downloaded over 905,000 times in April. This just shows that in addition to the many millions that listen live in the afternoon, nearly a million more are catching up "on demand". Like it's been suggested, if Scott is forced because of ageism at the BBC I will be furious but if he chooses to move on without management influence, I will respect his decision although I don't think he'll leave voluntary for a few more years because he's regularly said that he's a "radio nerd" and has been since the age of 8. You can also tell that he's well loved and respected at Radio 1 and he loves doing his job. He is primary cover presenter for 4 shows which is quite a lot considering the majority of other DJ's never do cover shows.

  8. I know what you mean. As strange as this sounds, I always think of how a DJ introduces the news as a measure of how slick they are generally. E.g. Scott is clearly the best, Greg's pretty good too. Dev, Huw Grimmy and Fearne are be okay, but they rarely hit the vocal. Matt Edmondson always makes it sound clunky (I remember one particularly funny incident when he'd actually done it quite well, except he'd gone a minute early!), Gemma is just awful (but she's awful generally). Moyles was always a news introducing god "...coming up after George with the news, it's 3:30".

For some reason it really gets my tits up when they refer to it as "Radio 1 Newsbeat" and don't bother giving a time check, just "the news" sounds much more natural, Newsbeat is the 15 minute programme!

And that, my dear UMers, is my strange obsession with DJ news introductions. Amen.

I do like Scott's original style to introducing the news, particularly when he's pressed the Newsbeat Jingle and talks down to the vocal but he's said a lot so hurries to intro the news. Today at 1:30 he said after pressing the jingle "Clean Bandit, Icona Pop and Katy B who performed for us at Radio 1's Academy in Glasgow coming up, it's 1:30, Cat Collins"

  9. In addition to the Big Weekend, several DJ's will be live from Glasgow everyday until Friday as part of Radio 1's Academy. The schedule is as follows:

Huw Stephens and Danny Howard brought their respective shows live from Glasgow yesterday

    Sunday 11 May

    1900-2100: Dan and Phil

    2100-2200: The Surgery with Aled

    Monday 12 May

0630-1000: The Radio 1 Breakfast Show

    Tuesday 13 May

    1000-1245: Fearne Cotton

2100-2200: The Review Show with Edith Bowman

    Wednesday 14 May

1300-1600: Scott Mills (the Chart Update from 1530 is with Jameela but I'm sure if she will be in Glasgow too)

    Thursday 15 May

    1600-1900: Greg James

    2200-0000: Phil & Alice

    Friday 16 May

    1800-1900: Charlie Sloth

  10. I'd like to think it's a mixture of both but primarily I think it's the latter reason. Will the Monday shows be live from Glasgow? Obviously The Breakfast Show will have to be but the other DJ's will have enough time to get back to London. Also, what's with the unusual start time of Danny Howard's Friday show?

  11. Having listened to 5 out of the 6 shows in full that Huw has done in for Scott while he is in Denmark, the more I'm beginning to realise that Chris & Huw's partnership just doesn't work. When Scott phoned in, it was clear how much Chris is missing Scott and how much he is missing having a decent chat and laugh during the show! The general chat just doesn't seem to go anywhere compared to when Scott's on.

Even Real or No Real with Charlie Sloth today seemed very dull and lost it's humour and zest it has when Scott's on. This only highlights how successful Mills is and if/when he moves on what he will be to the station

  12. Fearne's show even seems to be lacking proper links. For example, look at Grimmy or Scott, they can talk for up 5 even maybe 10 minutes on a given subject but all the speech on Fearne is just song/news intros and the occasional interview from a Live Lounge performer.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Fearne but her enthusiasm for her show has dropped since returning from Maternity Leave. I'm definitely up for hearing Alice on weekdays. Today's show was fantastic!

  13. On Friday, Nick made a comment during the Breakfast show saying that he wasn't sure if he was going to be working the Bank Holiday or not because "management don't tell you". Whether this was a joke or not, it makes sense that he is now not doing it because he was off on Easter Monday holiday as well which was a bank holiday. I'm sure I can remember Nick having previous Bank Holidays off as well.

  14. Going back a few posts, I think it would be good if Cara and Chris Sawyer were to have a little more airtime than they currently do. Chris does Real or No Real when Chris Smith can't and is really good. As a follower of him on Twitter, his tweets are hilarious and I think would be on air too. Cara chips in when asked the odd question. The show should have a set up as per Greg's show when Pippa or Travis makes an appearance when Chris Smith is on after 6

  15. I think Dance Anthems is on far too early in the day. I think Radio 1 should adopt the following model.

1600-1900: A new presenter to replace Danny (possibly Pete Allison?)

    1900-2100: Mistajam

2100-2300: Dance Anthems with Danny Howard

    2300-0700: As per existing line-up
