  1. Do you not think it's unfair too, that if the press office are unable to sort a pair of weekend tickets because he isn't "press" worthy enough, that he probably won't be average enough to compete in the big weekend competitions either.

    Imagine the outcry if Jono from a fans website was on the line to win Big Weekend tickets. Scott's team would not want that, and I doubt other teams that know Jono would either. That would be too risky...

    So it's a no win situation either way. He would be in danger of upsetting the BBC if he got on-air, but Radio 1 leave little choice. That said, I can't even imagine they will even consider calling a "Mr Jono Read" if he was picked from a hat! His name is pretty infamous.

    You're right! But throwing our toys out of the pram got us nowhere. I'm sure the Admin of this site does feel a bit used, but we should expect changes.

    I don't think anyone is throwing their toys out of the pram. It appears to be a close community here and people are going to be asking questions regarding the situation. Let's not forget this isn't your Digital Spy. It's a website set up by one person during high school who is only eighteen or nineteen now. You sound well experienced in what you do, and it seems you're a good five years older. For someone of Jono's age to be doing what he's doing is remarkably good. You have to understand that unlike us, he's not trained on media relations and will not understand the protocols for press at Radio 1. The only people who are throwing their toys out of the pram would be the members here, and they are simply expressing their opinion to what appears to be a cry for advice. Jono has expressed annoyance but has not stopped the website nor has he gone and topped himself!

    I probably would be a little disappointed but that was last year. People change and move on, policy changes. A favour here is an old favour the next. People shouldn't expect any form of payback.

    The whole website could be considered a 'favour'. From time to time a little thank you probably wouldn't go a miss. Yes, that might be in an ideal world, but if what you are saying is the consensus, I'd be put off allowing that to happen again. Correct me if I am wrong, but I did not see even a thank you at the end of that 'Frozen Indigo Angel' thread nor on the 'Paul Denchfield' blog. I am sure Jono, more than anyone else here, knows about doing favours and not expecting any form of payback. There is a lot of content on the forums that seeps into the Scott Mills show, and no one "throws the toys out of the prams" for that.

    This I haven't thought about, but what you should be saying is, UM is a form of Press / Media. However if an important newspaper / Broadcaster comes along promising maximum publicity - who would give a Pass to if you were a Head of Communications, Radio 1?

    And we will be waiting with baited breath to see as to what the media brings out.

  3. Hello Adam. I noticed from the photograph thread that you went last to the Big Weekend last year. Would I be right in saying that you may not have gone through the standard channels to get there? Did you offer your ticket to the people of Preston?

    I think you have glossed over what these 'geeks' are talking about. Yes, it's all very corporate to give this answer, but when you look at the bigger picture here you can see why there is a bit of a sore point here.

    Radio 1 owe nothing to Unofficial Mills - you are quite right. But trust and relationships are a two way thing. If Jono is to keep good relations with Radio 1 then maybe they should keep to their side of the deal too and work with him. They should be the ones communicating with him, and not just the other way round. This thread highlights there's a real breakdown in communication somewhere along the lines.

    Also, given that Radio 1 used this very website for free publicity of the Big Weekend last year, would it not seem right for 'UM' to be disappointed to receive nothing back for another year?

    You raise some valid points but here is where things differ for this website. It is a website produced by fans who work hard to make it a website that is universally known at Radio 1. 'UM' isn't press or media. The admin isn't a Radio 1 employee either. It is far more unique and should not have to go through the same protocol as the tabloids.

    The Press Office are without a doubt doing a fine job at organisation and holding things together, and no one here is disagreeing with that. But disappointingly Radio 1 are failing to recognise this is an organisation that works tremendously hard to promote Radio 1 in ways that online and press can't.

    Adam, every coin has a flip side. Do read on in future.

  4. What you need to remember is the BBC press office are after organisations that do not normally show interest in the event. They'll be happy to throw tickets at the national newspapers, local media and websites that wouldn't normally cover One Big Weekend.

    They are likely to offer very little to places like Unofficial Mills who will cover the event regardless of tickets.

    They will know as a fan you'll take what is given to you and will know you will cover the event regardless like with previous years.

    These people aren't in PR for always being nice people! They're clever, very clever. Take what they throw at you now, because they will only say they have ran out of tickets next week.
