Neil Sloan off of Omagh in Northern Ireland worked as a broadcast assistant (now an "assistant producer) on The Scott Mills Show between 2004 and 2005. He was one of the ones that didn't speak - unlike Laura who was given an active speaking role. He departed the show to work with Radio 1's newest recruits Fearne and Reggie on early breakfast. He also produced Chappers and Dave when they were presenting weekend mornings.
Neil was in charge of overseeing guest presenters of the Friday Early Breakfast show in 2007 when Fearne and Reggie moved to Weekend Breakfast. JK and Joel were presenting Early Breakfast between Monday and Thursday and did not present Friday due to the Chart Show. In September 2007 Greg James took over the show full time and Neil became the producer of the show.
He has remained with Greg James ever since and is commonly referred to as 'Producer Neil' on the show. His arguments with Greg James was once the subject of a mocking on Oh What's Occurring on The Scott Mills Show.
In June 2005 he answered some questions for Unofficial Mills about the Scott Mills show:
You don't say much on the show, do you have a note from your doctor saying you can't speak? Of course not - I have a perfectly fine voice I'm simply prefer not to speak in my role.
Laura claimed that you're the 'Judith Chalmers of Radio 1' because you're always on holiday, would you agree with this and where's your favourite holiday destination? I have more time off the show than her as I tend to work a lot of weekends and bank holidays on other shows... be it producing Chappers and Dave or having a dreadful time in the mud at Glastonbury. Oh, and as Emlyn always reminds me, I did work on Christmas Day, when he couldn't be arsed to come in and produce Scott. I suppose he does have children, though, so that's allowed. My favourite holiday destination is either Vancouver or Dubai - 2 extremes in temperature!
What's your favourite kind of music? My favourite artist of all time is Prince. The man is a musical genius. Bit weird, though. It's hard to say about current artists... as we have Radio 1 on in the office all day long, new music is constantly going through our heads.
What work do you do for the show? All the things behind the scenes that make it sound (reasonably!) good on the air.
What's your favourite food and beverage? Food? Hmmm... Nandos always goes down a treat - and I'm a big fan of Magners. (Alcohol is only for those over 18. Please drink responsibly). I'm very pleased it's becoming widely available in many bars and pubs now.
Which Radio 1 DJ would you like to work with? Every DJ is talented in their own unique way. I've worked with many different DJs in the past few years - and hope to work with many more in the future.
Do you have a funny story to tell about your work? There are many, many stories to tell... one doesn't stand out. I guess you'll have to wait for my book to be published.
What's your favourite song to sing at karaoke? I had only ever sung one song before I went to Mallorca - which was Wham's 'I'm Your Man.' However in Monroe's Karaoke Restaurant in Palma Nova I had a go at 'Man! I Feel Like A Woman' by Shania Twain and 'C'est La Vie' by B*witched.
Have you ever given out the Flirt Divert number to anyone? No.
When working with Scott, did you find he was a 'diva' DJ? Not in the slightest.
And finally, from one of our message board users, how many pegs can you fix to your face? I've never tried fixing any pegs to my face, but then I don't have a washing line - as I don't have a garden. Sorry.
