Fearne Cotton in political correctness row

RADIO 1 DJ Fearne Cotton shocked listeners with a gaffe about "cotton pickin' " as she interviewed black actor Morgan Freeman yesterday.

Fearne, 27, blurted out the politically incorrect phrase when explaining her name.

It sparked an online debate over whether it related to work historically done by slaves in America's Deep South.

She told Freeman, 72: "My first name is F.E.A.R.N.E. - bit of a weird one.

"And then Cotton, like cotton pickin'."

A listener remarked: "Maybe not the best way of describing your name to Morgan Freeman!"

A Radio 1 spokesman said: "Fearne clearly did not mean anything."

She was talking to Freeman about his new movie Invictus, where he plays Nelson Mandela.

I'm not sure what to make of Fearne.

Some days I listen to the show and think it's really upbeat. Other days she drives me mad talking about the showbiz lifestyle which no other DJ seems to keep going on about. Then there are the features, compared to what Greg has they are terrible and I think anybody would find it hard to make the 'Music Generator' fun and interesting radio! It just all feels very cheap and shallow which annoys me when Fearne actually has a good day and we hear her at her best.

I don't think she meant anything by the remark, just a bit careless.

it's obvious that she hates black people because of this, and the only answer to this problem is to supress all white people in the uk.

oh come on... i grow tired of hearing about people who get upset by this. it's hardly like she came out and said 'i hate n.....'.

on the grid.

She didn't mean anything by it!

I have finally had the chance to listen to her a bit more recently and i don't mind her. But i think all the negative comments are affecting her, it doesn't look like she is going anywhere so just except her. :)

I totally agree with this.... I'm sure she meant nothing by the comment.

Yet another example of our PC world gone bloody mad.

One thing I always find remarkable is that people go on & on about the way she talks about herself. She not gonna have a show, and talk about someone else, is she?? All the DJs tell you about their lives and what they're up to.

I wasnt keen when she was first given the slot and shes not my favourite but I think I've got used to her. It was time for Ms Whiley to move on to something different anyway, likewise Edith. I'm enjoying Greg in the afternoon, hes come on loads since the shift from early breakfast..........

I think a lot of people weren't keen, because she is replacing a great lady in Jo Whiley, so she was bound to get hit hard. I am greatful she took away the teddybear of the day feature!!

I mean.... please.

That said, she's bright, bubbly and entertaining with her little moods thrown in - she makes mistakes, and she needs to research the bands a bit more. But she's on the up!!

Exchange "did" for "does" and I'd agree. Fearne Cotton (wool between the ears) is indeed as meaningless a little piece of fluff as her name suggests.

Of course she didn't mean anything by making this frankly pretty embarrassing faux pas, because she simply isn't clued up enough to realise it might cause offence.

Rather than blame her, I'd prefer to criticise whoever gave her her current position. She is clearly out of her depth.

Nail. Head. Hit.

I have listened to her a few times now, and even though i didn't like Jo Whiley that much i'd rather listen to her than Fearne. We can only hope that Coxy will get to take over that show eventually, and Fearne will just sod off to Switch. Incidently, i like listening to Reggie Yates a lot more now he's on his own.

    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
