Random mood = Random thread.

Tomato or Toe-mah-to? Water or Watter?Graham or How chops (who?!) said it.

Basically, how do you say words, and why do you think you do. I ask this because I've realised I no longer say "Castle", it's become "Cassle". This intrigues me. Anyone else say words weirdly?

This was a debated/argued subject all through university.

The first time I visited my sister at Durham Uni, I didn't get that the 'Cassle' everyone was referring to was the 'castle'. Being a southerner, I do pronounce the invisible 'r' in words like grass, glass, path. Oddly though, I pronounce Doncaster the northern way.

That's because that's how it's pronounced, innit.

It's all down to your regional or otherwise accent really. I have a fairly neutral accent (although I come from the south, and have been up here for years I've avoided the local accent, mostly) and pronounce the long 'a' in castle etc. Some things just sound wrong though, such as 'watter'.

I wouldnt say this 1 is a weird 1, I dont think I've ever heard anyone pronounce the T in castle, and I should know cos the word castle is in my street's name :P

The 1 that gets on my tits each and every time is "Ibuprofen", as far as I'm concerned its eye-boo-pro-fen, at a push I'll accept ib-ip-reh-fen but under in no way shape or form is it eye-broo-fen. I used to know someone that called it that and every single time i heard it I wanted to rattle her head off a door frame. even thinking about it now irritates me.

Although its extremely annoying, I do find it quite amusing to hear someone pronounce letters which ordinarily are silent, to make themselves somehow look more intelligent. I know of someone who always says the "L" in names like Chalmers and Dalziel, which to the best of my knowledge have silent L's in them. It annoys me and entertains me at the same time, its very strange

Oh yeah! Laugh is laff for me, and Glasgow is Glazgo. Garridge also :)

I hate that too!

But then i say "Where's it to?" Instead of "Where is it?" and "Where they to?" Instead of "where are they?" Proper devon that! My boyfriend finds it so funny

Someone I knew used to ask "What do you think to that?" rather than "what do you think of that?" or "what do you think about that?". It really annoyed me. He also pronounced 'muesli' as "mu-es-lee", three separate syllables phonetically, it sounded hilarious. Oh and he was from London as well.

      Agreed, Martha seems to quietly taken over as host of the Tuesday Bass and Big Beats show that Annie Nightingale did would be good to have some promotion to be done for her show. Agreed with this on bank holidays on a Radio 1 dance day inpaticular would be quite good to have Sarah Storey, Jaguar, Jeremiah Asiamah, Charlie Tee and Martha presenting. I always felt that in Christmas and New Year previously having Victoria Jane to do a Future Soul take over playlist.

      To be fair to him, this week and next week he’s on his podcast tour which was arranged well before he started on R1. After that I would guess he’ll start being on everyday?

      Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.

      Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters

      Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.

      Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.

      Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.

      Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
