R1 predictions for 2010?

ok so its nearly the end of the year time for christmas and end of the year reviews.... What do people think will happen to R1 next year?

its an almost unrecognisable station from a year ago with almost everyone having moved on or moved around. Has it achieved its aim to lose its older viewers and gain more younger ones?

What will happen to the schedule next year? Will any other DJs leave completely or will the schedule and presenters stabilize? It sounds from other places that Moyles is likely to leave sometime next year..but is he or is that just a rumour?

Hmmm, lets see.....If Chris leaves, I can see Vernon being the choice to replace him, even if its not long term. I could also see Chris going into Vernon & Sara's slot. When Sara returns, I reckon (and hope) she'll replace Fearne on the mid-morning slot. I think Jo may make a move over to Radio 2, leaving the weekend afternoon slot open to Fearne, or a new DJ? I think Radio 1 needs to bring in some fresh talent next year i.e someone that can do what Greg James has done over the past few years.

Thats daytimes covered, possibly a specialist / evening dj reshuffle, but I dont predict it'll be anything major like this year

been a ok year i suppose.

as for 2010;

Moyles to be on his way out or at least his replacement known (unsure when his extended contract runs out),

Cotton to be under a lot of pressure due to falling listeners,

Whiley to leave R1,

Edith to take Whileys weekend show over,

news of what will happen to Mills moving to a new slot or leaving R1,

falling listeners for R1 overall as the older listener leaves.

my personal feelings;

Moyles isn't as good as he has been, he knows he is now on the downward slope & the end is near, i can see a big revamp when Evans takes over R2 i think R1 will push Moyles to get younger listeners so to get the older ones to move to R2 (NOT going to happen).

Cotton shame for her really, Jo left in a bad way could have been handled much better, Cotton cannot build anything on the show as it is, maybe its the producers fault i dunno, the Live Lounge is starting to sound tired now.

Greg, don't see what the fuss was about, a bloke playing some songs just the average dj, i dunno if the show has changed from when Greg first took over as i have not listened for about a month now, FLASH FLASH is about as good as Greg gets, sorry.

Mills, needs something fresh i think, its still as good as it ever was, but it cannot carry on as it is for to much longer,

Edith, will hold on for dear life to her R1 contract, cannot see her doing anything to rock the boat, the show is ok but a later time slot would be more suitable i think, can see her covering for some daytime dj's if they are ill or away,

Whiley who knows, i can only see her leaving radio all together & doing something else in music, if she does stay in radio it will be 6Music i think.

:)

I don't know why you listen Alan, I can't remember the last time you said something positive about the station. ;)

well if things don't change they will stay the same !

i still love R1 & i accept that the station changes & evolves, i have been listening 20 years probably, but my main worry is that R1 is moving from proper dj's to presenters & yes Greg & Fearne fall into the presenter category.

maybe its time for me to move on, i dunno, not old enough for R2 though.

Moyles gets another year.

Chappers goes off to do Sport

Greg gets drive time

Mills moves to weekend afternoon shows (request + chart)

Reggie moves to daytime afternoons (gregs)

Edith dies

Jo, leaves and voices album adverts some more?

*Maybe Dev replace Fearne, but I have never heard him so I can't judge.

Edith dies.

Am I a bad person? I don't know why, but that made me laugh!

As much as I'd love Coxy to triumphantly take the morning slot, I don't think it'll happen as Fearne's promotion was based solely on her age, and ratings won't matter. Even if it's literally 3 people- as long as they're teenagers, the bosses will be happy!

Ooh, there's what should happen in 2010- Granddad Parfitt on the Radio 1 stairlift and out the door!

I could see that Mills/Yates swap predicted earlier happening.

edith, moyles and scott mills will be gone by june. radio 1 wants to steal the c beebies veiwers, it's been known since 2004. judge jules, pete tong and annie nightingale will also go. any scraps of quality at radio 1 will die.

if i am right, i hope the entire radio 1 building implodes on itself.

on the grid.

Hmmmm, Moyles' contract runs out in june i think and Mills has 2 years left. So, Moyles goes in June, Scott gets the morning slot and Gregg goes to afternoon. Meanwhile Cotton and Dev will be axed due to falling figures and Sean Montague (me) will take over Greggs show (then later the drive time) while some new DJs will fill in other slots!

I think that the line up stayed the same for way to long, so in september when it came to moving it about they realised they haven't got any new actual talent! So i feel some new DJs will be needed in the coming year! :)

I love how stupid some of these predictions are, espically the people who are being serious.

What planet are you guys on!? Haha

I'm sure that Mills and Reggie won't be swapping next year.

I don't see any of the weekday daytime schedule changing, Moyles loves R1 and wont be going anywhere, nevermind what the sun or the daily fail have to say.

The only maybe could be Jo leaving but probably not for a year or two.

The whole schedule needs to settle again and let djs get used to their new slots...

....and Sean Montague (me) will take over Greggs show (then later the drive time) while some new DJs will fill in other slots!

Oh and Good Luck Sean haha....

The place will blow up!!

Seriously though, I think Moyles will go, and be replaced by Mills (which would please me). Will still miss Moyles though!! :-(

Edith will stay. Totally agree with EF4L.

Jo will go. And the Cotton may go into her weekend slot.

Completely new person for Cotton's slot - don't know who though.

Greg James will stay where he is, I think - even though I don't like him, the Station seem to really like him, so it's too bad.

They haven't lost their older listeners, because I'm still here (just as an example), clinging on to the last breath!!

I think R1 would wise to re-think their ideas for a younger & younger audience, because it may dumb things down to an intolerable extent. Producers also need to stop asking people their ages, when ringing them up (obviously it means people such as myself will not get on air).

Edith was talking to a couple of young people this morning, and it was v. annoying. Kind of like: mother to daughter - something like my local radio would do.

R1 need to get their edge back. I know it's difficult following on from the Jonathan Ross stuff, but they need to get back out there, and make it all happen again.

I haven't enjoyed this year of listening. It's been v. disruptive from a listener point of view, and R1 appeared to be losing the plot during the Summer, I felt.

I am happier now though, towards the end of the year, because DJs have settled into their new jobs, some more so than others. I've kind of got used to people in the new Slots, and it's better again. :-)

Every cloud....

* Moyles to step down or return to 1 show a week, probably up against Jonathan Ross on Radio 2.

* Radio 1 to re-evaluate its position and probably rebrand and become more youthful.

Other than that Radio 1 will probably just tick along as it normally does.

Until it explodes?? :hahaha:

Can't see Moyles doing just 1 show a week!! No way is someone like him gonna go from brekkie to just one show a week!!

    • Less so with 5 Live. But with Nihal, Nicky Campbell and Mark Chapman get what you are saying.6 Music does have that with Huw Stephens, Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Marc Riley and Mark Radcliffe
    • Agreed, Martha seems to quietly taken over as host of the Tuesday Bass and Big Beats show that Annie Nightingale did would be good to have some promotion to be done for her show. Agreed with this on bank holidays on a Radio 1 dance day inpaticular would be quite good to have Sarah Storey, Jaguar, Jeremiah Asiamah, Charlie Tee and Martha presenting. I always felt that in Christmas and New Year previously having Victoria Jane to do a Future Soul take over playlist.
    • To be fair to him, this week and next week he’s on his podcast tour which was arranged well before he started on R1. After that I would guess he’ll start being on everyday?
    • It’s Jamie’s dream of a lifetime to be a full time Radio 1 presenter apparently, but he can only do it 2 or 3 days a week.
    • Radio 1 generation meaning??  Today's 10-30 yr-olds? I doubt it. They'll still know Pete Tong though, because he is rhyming slang!
    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock. 6th May schedule has updated to show that the Radio 1 Big Weekend Shows will now be the following: 6am-10am 10am-2pm 2pm-6pm 6pm-8pm Still no presenters listed.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
