Big Weekend cost Swindon £400,000

THE Big Weekend cost Swindon about £400,000 with most of the cash going on policing and transport. Now Swindon Council is figuring out how to hold a music festival every year.

It used money put aside for a summer festival in the town centre, marketing money and Government funding to pay for its side of the Radio 1 event.

Coun Phil Young, Swindon Council’s lead member for culture, said the investment has paid off thanks to the national exposure on the town.

He said: “It was difficult, as we didn’t know how much it would cost but we knew that Cardiff spent £500,000 in 2003.

“The location presented us with a challenge, as Lydiard is rural.”

Transport, including AA staff, signage, car parking and stewards, cost £200,000 while the police were paid £160,000.

The remaining £40,000 went on additional security, said Coun Young.

“Hotels received bumper bookings while the economy is in mire,” he said. “It gave the town so much publicity. It gets the town into people’s consciousness.

“The biggest question or comment I have received is: ‘Right, what is happening next year’. There seems to be a real desire from the town to hold a festival on an annual basis. The festival had an impact on the people of West Swindon so we would need to consider the location.

“The Big Weekend was a unique one-off but now we have to sit down and think about what, where and when.”

He thanked council staff and volunteers who acted as litter pickers and stewards.

“When the council went after the Radio 1 Big Weekend we always knew that it would be hugely beneficial to Swindon but I don’t think anyone involved realised just how big it would be.”

He also pointed out the benefits children saw thanks to BBC and council outreach work and the success of the fringe events.

Boy band JLS stunned Nova Hreod School thanks to a surprise visit arranged by BBC Radio 1.

Senior broadcasting staff also visited the town to talk to youngsters about the media.

I think effectively £400,000, although it seems a lot, is quite reasonable for what they have received and also the brilliant organisation has shown Swindon in a new light to those from outside of the town. The running of buses every five minutes for free couldn't have been cheap but as the article mentions it must have given the economy a boost as all hotels and B&Bs were soon fully booked. Hopefully, in general, the people of Swindon approve.

£400,000 isn't that bad considering all the marketing the town got, all the business that was brought in and all the people that probably managed to keep there jobs within the town because of it.

Also....Imagine how much it cost the BBC, probably dosn't even compare to £400,000.

They did alright, I don't think the location was particularly good, seeing as it was 2 miles from the main road, plus some from wherever anyone else could get their cars too. We had to trek from the devere hotel each time, which is where the masterclass and the celebs stayed (they were given a coach to the venue tho..)

Other then the ruralness and the stewards not knowing where on earth things were to direct us into or out of town, they did really well and the event was just class!

There is still no news about another festival next year?! Though they are making an specific music venue, something swindon doesn't have yet!

Though apparently Radio One don't tell the council how much it will actually cost them untill they can't cancel, but it did Swindon great and so we can't complain! :)

    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
    • They knew Roman wanted to leave early last year but wasn't officially announced but he gave them time to sort replacement. Found and offered Jordan a deal in June or July and needed time to get Jordan out of Contract at bbc and roman to do notice  Jordan had dinner with Katie Vick and Arielle to ask advice and all said he should go.
    • And they told Radio 4’s Feedback that it was an ‘experiment’ to ‘look at the best way to serve young listeners’ but reaffirmed that 280 hours commitment.
    • I doubt he wanted to go to Global if a slot before he found out kemp was leaving.
    • We're hoping to get some answers in the coming weeks
    • From what he's saying on the Pod he's been trying to get out of r1 for a while. Looks like he needed to wait for a show on global to be available. Jordan had bbq last summer with most of thr global execs and he's referenced the deal was in place then. Obviously the hold up was r1 being stubborn
    • All seems to be back to normal this morning.
    • Indeed and Jordan was already friends with Sian Welby, Will Manning and Jimmy Hill.
    • It's great to see those friendships still thriving. I think the days of Radio 1 DJs and Capital DJs being unable to co-exist is long over. You used to either be firmly BBC or commercial, and you don't get the sense that's the case anymore.
    • Maia Beth will be presenting the Radio 1 Happy shows from the 27th April replacing Katie.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001ydkr
    • Vick and Jordan together on Insta (with Ariel’s) in Ibiza. You do imagine Jordan’s ex colleagues have a very different attitude to him than management. Comments on Help! And very subtle comments on Capital Breakfast suggest Jordan was frustrated with Radio 1 / BBC management.
    • I can name quite a few people on this forum who would be better presenters than Danny.
    • His NYE shows were very good. Only thing I would say is he was shackled down slightly there. During his peak he played some great trance stuff in the late 90s and early 00s. So if he were to do a regular show that would have to feature more. Aside from I'd love to see him back.
