Ooooh good thread, I really really like it ;) Right... erm... I'll collect some of my favourite ones and I'll get back to you on this tonight :D (I'm currently trying to concentrate on a Maths past paper so it might not be the best idea to do this now).

Crosses by Jose Gonsalez (seeing him in August!)

Don't you know that I'll be around to guide you

Through your weakest moments to leave them behind you

Returning nightmares only shadows

We'll cast some light and you'll be alright for now

Crosses all over, heavy on your shoulders

The sirens inside you waiting to step forward

Disturbing silence darkens your sight

We'll cast some light and you'll be alright for now

Crosses all over the boulevard

The streets outside your window overflooded

People staring they know you've been broken

Repeatedly reminded by the looks on their faces

Ignore them tonight and you'll be alright

We'll cast some light and you'll be alright

Elvis Ain't Dead by Scouting For Girls

I wish it was me you chose

cause Elvis ain't dead

and you're coming back

Those lines especially. I knew what it was like to be in that kind of denial.

Also:

James Bond by Scouting For Girls

I wish I was James Bond

Just for the day

Kissing all the girls, Blow the bad guys away.

I know I've never seen a Bond movie but this song is so lovely.

I love the lyrics to While My Guitar Gently Weeps by the Beatles (George Harrison)

I look at you all see the love there thats sleeping

While my guitar gently weeps

I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping

Still my guitar gently weeps

I dont know why nobody told you how to unfold your love

I dont know how someone controlled you

They bought and sold you.

I look at the world and I notice its turning

While my guitar gently weeps

With every mistake we must surely be learning

Still my guitar gently weeps

I dont know how you were diverted

You were perverted too

I dont know how you were inverted

No one alerted you.

I look at you all see the love there thats sleeping

While my guitar gently weeps

Look at you all . . .

Still my guitar gently weeps.

Actually, many of the Beatles' songs contain some beautiful lyrics. Let It Be, Something, The Long And Winding Road, Across The Universe, Here Comes The Sun... I could go on forever.

Il n'y a qu'un devoir, c'est d'être heureux; il ny'a qu'une vertu, c'est la justice -Denis Diderot

That's so weird that you just put a Beatles song on Sigrid, whilst I was just looking for this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anJ-C2jaDW4

It's almost like poetry, like so much of their stuff. I'd say John Lennon wrote most of the lyrics. Simple, but good.

You've got to hide you're love away:

Here I stand head in hand

Turn my face to the wall

If she's gone I can't go on

Feeling two foot small

Everywhere people stare

each and every day

I can see them laugh at me

And I hear them say

Hey you've got to hide your love away

Hey you've got to hide your love away

How can I even try?

I can never win

Hearing them, seeing them

In the state I'm in

How could she say to me

"Love will find a way?"

Gather round all you clowns

Let me hear you say

Hey you've got to hide your love away

Hey you've got to hide your love away

'To disagree with three-fourths of the British public is one of the first requisites of sanity'.

Two Weeks in Hawaii by Hellogoodbye

You are so special

I just hope that we can be friends

I'll wait forever

But I guess that it all depends

On you and yours

So come on and dance with me

Cause you are so special

I hope that this makes you smile

And you might stay that way for a while

Cause you deserve every grin that you get

And you'll get em a lot from me

I love these lyrics. They're the type that you wish were written for you.

dicks are for my friends - they're for my friends

dicks - friends - my house

Hmm.

My favourite lyrics come from Maximo Park (Acrobat) and Bloc Party (The Present). It was sooo hard to decide. If I could, I probably post about 10 songs. I am also quite tempted to post my favourite "bits" of lyrics but I think I’ll be able to stop myself. Here’s the Acrobat (well, some of it anyway):

I don't remember losing sight of your needs

I don't remember losing sight of your needs

I am not an acrobat,

I cannot perform these tricks for you,

Losing all my balance,

Falling from a wire made for you

The sky is often used as a metaphor,

I suppose it’s because it’s so big and expansive,

When a long stranded cloud sits just above the horizon,

Leaving a strip of clear blue beneath it,

It becomes the panorama,

And you turn your head 360 degrees,

And the same line follows you round,

If the land is sufficiently flat,

Really nothing can be compared to it

And here’s the Present:

If you're cold and you're alone

And you don't know where to go

You can call me anytime

Nothing's changed, I am still here

If you're running out of breath

And your building's burning down

You can jump, I will catch you

Nothing's changed, I am still here

With heavy hands and an absent mind

Did I blow your candle out?

With shortened words and a lack of time

Am I ever on your mind?

Was I cruel and never there?

Nothing to rely on

Was our romance a black hole?

You kept the better half than me

Well if you really wanted to know

Well no the earth's not moved for me since

I wish I could've given you lightness

The lightness that you deserve

And they say time is a healer

And time will look after you

I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait

Come over

annnd my favourite bit

And I stole you that ring

'Cause I wanted you to have it

And it wasn't about me, I just wanted you to have it

Your smile, baby your smile, baby I come alive

I feel so naked, like before we met

Last night I was so close to just calling you up

They say it takes time to heal the wounds

I can't wait, I can't wait

Come over

Sorry about that! I know it's long!

Can't top this: Baz Luhrman's Everybody's Free to Use Sunscreen. It's a philosophy. I adore it. It's verrrrrrrry long btw.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’99

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be

it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by

scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable

than my own meandering

experience…I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not

understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.

But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and

recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before

you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you

imagine. Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as

effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing

bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that

never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm

on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing everyday that scares you Sing Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with

people who are reckless with yours. Floss Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes

you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with

yourself. Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you

succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements. Stretch Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your

life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they

wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year

olds I know still don’t. Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone. Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe

you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky

chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t

congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your

choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body,

use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people

think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever

own.. Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them. Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for

good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the

people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you

should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and

lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you

knew when you were young. Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live

in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel. Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will

philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize

that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were

noble and children respected their elders. Respect your elders. Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,

maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one

might run out. Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will

look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who

supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of

fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the

ugly parts and recycling it for more than

it’s worth. But trust me on the sunscreen…

'To disagree with three-fourths of the British public is one of the first requisites of sanity'.

I could write a book about my favourite lyrics. Maximo Park - Acrobat does have amazing lyrics, Paul Smith captures despair like no one else.

Guillemots - Made Up Love Song #43 captures what it is to be in love perfectly:

I love you through sparks and shining dragons, I do,

now there's poetry, in an empty coke can.

I love you through sparks and shining dragons, I do,

now there's majesty, in a burnt out caravan.

You got me off the paper round, just sprang out of the air,

the best things come from nowhere,

I love you, I don't think you care.

I love you through sparks and shining dragons, I do,

and the symmetry in your northern grin.

I love you through sparks and shining dragons, I do,

I can see myself in the refill litter bin.

You got me off the sofa, just sprang out of the air,

the best things come from nowhere, I can't believe you care.

Belle and Sebastian - Another Sunny Day also has beautiful lyrics: http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=3530822107858566012 Belle and Sebastian use some beautiful imagery in their songs. You have to think about it to work out what he means.

There’s something in my eye a little midge so beguiling

Sacrificed his life to bring us both eye to eye

I heard the Eskimos remove obstructions with tongues, dear

You missed my eye, I wonder why, I didn’t complain

You missed my eye, I wonder why, please do it again

For sheer honesty in the lyrics I love the song Mass Pike by the Get Up Kids:

I wonder when I wander home

If I'll be fit to drink alone

Sleep with my memories

Pictures apologies

For every minute yesterday

Regret reminds me anyway

If I remember anything

I'll make mistakes again

I'm drowning in my miseries

It solves everything

Maximo Park have some beautiful lyrics:

I sleep with my hands across my chest,

And I dream of you with someone else

- I love how he starts and finishes Going Missing with that line.

One more favourite lyric because this post is getting too long:

Love is a lie which means I've been lied to,

Love is a lie which means I've been lying too.

Nothing can describe how it sounds with several thousand people in one room/field all together singing along to that line at the tops of their voices.

'Forget happiness I'm fine, I'll forget everything in time'

I love the lyrics to most Manics songs, especially 'The Holy Bible' album.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest pieces of contemporary rock music and their magnum opus.

Richey James was the guy who wrote most of The Holy Bible. It is so sad that he is likely no longer with us and their mediocre material following Everything Must Go (the last album he was involved with before his disappearance in 1995) demonstrates what a masterful lyricist he truly was.

It has never been confirmed, but it has been suggested by several people that the lyrics to that song are about a homosexual, possibly Brian Epstein who was The Beatles manager until 1967 when he committed suicide not soon after homosexually was partially legalized in this country. The lyric in the 1967 song A Day in the Life about the lights changing and not noticing may also be a reference to him.

If you read the lyrics with that in mind, that the protagonist is a homosexual in an era when it was illegal and socially unacceptable it seems credible though there are many out there who would like to believe that The Beatles, specifically John Lennon, would write ambiguously about homosexuality.

Do You Know What I'm Seeing? - Panic At The Disco

Clouds are marching along, singing a song, just like they do.

If the clouds were singing a song, I'd sing along, wouldn't you too?

If you just knew what they could do.

Oh, if you just knew, what would they do?

And if the birds are just hollow words flying along, singing a song,

What would they do?

If they just knew what they could do.

Oh, if they just knew.

I know it's sad that I never gave a damn about the weather,

And it never gave a damn about me.

I know it's sad that I never gave a damn about the weather,

And it never gave a damn about me.

No, it never gave a damn about me.

I know it's mad, but if I go to hell

Will you come with me or just leave?

I know it's mad, but if the world were ending

Would you kiss me or just leave me?

Just leave me?

Yeah definitely, these are some of the favourite lyrics. "I've got no one to call in the middle of the night anymore, I'm just alone with these thoughts." "If everyone became this sensitive, I wouldn't have to be so sensitive" Good song overall, but "love is a lie.." is my favourite line.

these are some of the songs from Maximo Park that I never get bored with:

The pinkness round your iris,

Reveals that you've been crying,

But I don't know what my crime is,

I cause upset without trying.

Your Urge

Defacing pictures of famous people on the train

Standing by the monument just waiting for the rain

Standing By The Monument

Some people hide their emotions

And some people show too much

I'm aiming for somewhere central

Now isn't it obvious?

He changed his look for you

But you changed your life for him

Now was the verdict worth the trial?

Did we go too far, is that why your nose is bleeding?

Last night I dreamt we kissed on a bench in the evening

What went wrong with you?

I never took you for a fool

But all it takes is a rumour

Now isn't it obvious?

Nosebleed

Picture me with you but you couldn't do it,

Everything I said was true but I couldn't prove it,

And I'll admit there was a web but it wasn't me who spun it,

Now I've made my bed but you wouldn't lie down in it

I wrote my feelings down in a rush,

I didn't even check the spelling,

And closed the postcard of a painting

You are just another thing that I have yet to fathom,

Oooh you are just another thing I've yet to fathom

And I'm losing more than I'll ever have,

I'm losing more than I'll ever give to you

Postcard of a Painting

I think it's time we compiled a list,

Of places where we shouldn't go,

Now is not the time to lose your voice,

Everyone should have a choice,

And if you should ever fall,

You know id kiss you better,

I kept the letters that you sent me

Kiss You Better

Alright alright I'll go now

The Lyrics from I am the resurection by the Stone Roses described how I felt about an ex girlfriend exactly at that point in time(we on friendlier terms now) so i shall plump for that.

Down down, you bring me down

I hear you knocking at my door and I cant sleep at night

Your face, it has no place

No room for you inside my house I need to be alone

Dont waste your words I dont need anything from you

I dont care where youve been or what you plan to do

Turn turn, I wish youd learn

Theres a time and place for everything Ive got to get it through

Cut loose, youre no use

I couldnt stand another second in your company

Dont waste your words I dont need anything from you

I dont care where youve been or what you plan to do

Stone me, why cant you see

Youre a no-one nowhere washed up baby whod look better dead

Your tongue is far too long

I dont like the way it sucks and slurps upon my every word

Dont waste your words I dont need anything from you

I dont care where youve been or what you plan to do

I am the resurrection and I am the light

I couldnt ever bring myself to hate you as Id like

I am the resurrection and I am the light

I couldnt ever bring myself to hate you as Id like

Also the lyrics to the first day of my life by bright eyes describe perfectly how I feel about the current love of my life,

Also the lyrics to the first day of my life by bright eyes describe perfectly how I feel about the current love of my life,

That is a beautiful song.

Every song by Maximo Park has such special lyrics (apart from maybe Grafitti, which doesn't make much sense).

The band Brand New have some great lyrics. They're not very well known in this country but I really like them. I saw them live at Leeds festival and the singer has so much emotion.

And I know that you're a sucker for anything acoustic

But when I say "let's keep in touch"

I really mean I wish that you'd grow up

This is the first song for your mix tape

and it's short just like your temper

Somewhat golden like the afternoons

we used to spend before you got too cool

- Brand New - Mix Tape

Bloc Party - Waiting For The 7.18 means a lot to me as well:

If I could do it again

I'd make more mistakes

I'd not be so scared of falling

If I could do it again

I'd climb more trees

I'd pick and I'd eat more wild blackberries

Just give me moments

Not hours or days

It reminds me of being a kid and climbing trees and picking blackberries in the summer. As I'm getting older I realise that I can't really get those days back.

MGMT - Time To Pretend:

I'll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms

That one line seems so different from the sentiment of the rest of the song, I love that song because it is about the choices we make as we grow up and what we leave behind.

I suppose I need to put some Radiohead in:

I don't wanna be your friend, I just wanna be your lover

No matter how it ends, no matter how it starts.

That line grabbed me as soon as I first heard it. It's about wanting someone regardless of the consequences. The song House of Cards is very haunting.

'Forget happiness I'm fine, I'll forget everything in time'

Fix You by Coldplay. So sad yet so inspiring.

When you try your best, but you don't succeed

When you get what you want, but not what you need

When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep

Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face

When you lose something you can't replace

When you love someone, but it goes to waste

Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below

When you're too in love to let it go

But if you never try you'll never know

Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face

When you lose something you cannot replace

Tears stream down your face

And I...

Tears stream down on your face

I promise you I will learn from my mistakes

Tears stream down your face

And I...

Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you
