Jo Whiley annoys me!

I know she's championed some great bands over the years, but seriously how annoying is Jo Whiley? She's such a stick in the mud, take this morning for a prime example, Moyles over-running as usual running late but sounding great, and instead of letting Moyles play his golden years track which we all haven't heard on mainstream radio for ages, she's more concerned with cutting in and making sure we all hear the chuffin' annoying sounds of scouting for girls (dont get me started on this band) God forbid Whiley lets her hair down and has some fun on her show, I wonder how she'd cope with without a producer telling her what to do!! Time for her to pack her radio 1 bags and leave for radio 2 or even 6 music me thinks!!

Her show is not designed to be a comedy show - you've got Scott and Chris for that. She plays all the new music which is what people want - and it's not exactly her choice! Jo used to annoy me when I first started listening to R1 but now I think she's a brilliant DJ. Better than most, anyway.

I don't know what's the problem with Jo, Radio 1 is all to do with music, and she's just what you want on the station. She's the best at what she does, and Edith is the best as what she does with movies.

Yeah no, dont get me wrong she's fantastic when it comes to the music (altho The Zipper Zane Lowe gets a lot of the new music ahead of her) its just she's too "by the book" if you know what I mean, just chill out, relax, she always sounds like someone is proding her telling her to hurry up and dont move from the script. It just really annoyed me this mornin when she cut the legend that is Roachford (;)) just to play scouting for girls for the gajillion'th time!!

Remember back in the day when the legends Mark & Lard were on the air? The most entertainin thing was the hand-over from them to Moyles! Genius, neither of them gave a toss about missing the odd track here and there or running late!! Quality, bring em back!! Sorry Jo! haha

But you're still talking entertainment. I tune in at that time for music, and little else. You can't really compare Mark and Lard with Jo Whiley. I'd say as far as being chilled out she's the most chilled out DJ you can get!

I would hardly class Scott as someone to "wind down with"!

Chris and Scott are the comedians, but Scott throws in a bit more music and less chat. Jo is all about new music, live sessions and light-hearted chat. Edith has some music but focuses on movies.

I'm not sure if I'm part of minority when I say that I really like Jo's show, and think she (along with Edith) is just right for the middle of the day, when it's likely listeners are likely to be doing something at the same time as listening.

I concur!

I don't think she tries to be any age any more than anyone else does. I've had mates who think they should be behaving a certain way just because a specific amount of years have past, why I don't know.

You find out in life that there is no age to act, you behave as a result of your life experience so far.

So her life experience hasn't surpassed 18 then .:)

Jo does what she does better than anyone else could - she manages to combine daytime and specialist in a way that i dont think anyone else could! I think itwill be hard to ever replace her, though i think nemone actually done a good job a few years back when jo was off on maternity before.

I listened to Annie Mac when she was first on Thursday nights, and i liked here then, but i dont really like her during the day. But maybe thats just cuz i miss coxy!

mark & lard were a complete discrace to radio 1 and human life, edith talking 'fulms' for 3 hours straight and then playing editors records makes me want to explode with exitement. as for jo, well it's just bland really. she's ok if you're into hippie music and below par sleepy live whinge performances. however if thats not what you are into then she's not for you.

on the grid.

i loved mark and lard so that was dripping with sarcasm as you could tell. i apologise. however why the hell would anyone care if i am being positive or not with anything?

whiley has been on radio 1 for years, she's not someone i exactly break my neck to listen to really. but if she's on i can cope with her, just a dj really. it's just when the live lounge comes on i have to switch off.

on the grid.

She's great at doing the live lounge and maida vale stuff, she can gel sycophantically with everyone ,but i find her slighty annoying in that she's 41, and trying to be 18 .

42 actually - 43 in July

Hear hear! Age is irrelevant.

We've had this discussion before - Jo knows about music, is a professional broadcaster to her fingertips, and has a wicked sense of fun.

What's more, she and Scott are friends. :)

UM is a nice place

    • Less so with 5 Live. But with Nihal, Nicky Campbell and Mark Chapman get what you are saying.6 Music does have that with Huw Stephens, Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Marc Riley and Mark Radcliffe
    • Agreed, Martha seems to quietly taken over as host of the Tuesday Bass and Big Beats show that Annie Nightingale did would be good to have some promotion to be done for her show. Agreed with this on bank holidays on a Radio 1 dance day inpaticular would be quite good to have Sarah Storey, Jaguar, Jeremiah Asiamah, Charlie Tee and Martha presenting. I always felt that in Christmas and New Year previously having Victoria Jane to do a Future Soul take over playlist.
    • To be fair to him, this week and next week he’s on his podcast tour which was arranged well before he started on R1. After that I would guess he’ll start being on everyday?
    • It’s Jamie’s dream of a lifetime to be a full time Radio 1 presenter apparently, but he can only do it 2 or 3 days a week.
    • Radio 1 generation meaning??  Today's 10-30 yr-olds? I doubt it. They'll still know Pete Tong though, because he is rhyming slang!
    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock. 6th May schedule has updated to show that the Radio 1 Big Weekend Shows will now be the following: 6am-10am 10am-2pm 2pm-6pm 6pm-8pm Still no presenters listed.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
