Big Weekend TV & Radio Coverage

Recommended Posts

I've enjoyed hearing the DJs enjoying themselves on the radio coverage today, it really must be like Reading and Leeds feeling this year with the lovely weather and they seem to all be so happy and excited despite all their years in the music business. I loved Jo's description of her dress as grey and silky and "very forgiving", Too. :)

I just watched Usher on Red Button, he was excellent despite mic difficulties. Not really my type of music but he is a really good artist and so professional.

I was wondering what everyone else is enjoying on the TV and Radio coverage? I'm looking forward to BBC3 at 7pm, have even SKY+'d Doctor Who so I can watch the Big Weekend - hows that for dedication!

Watching Madonna now - I hadn't realised she could play the guitar. She certainly looks very physically fit.

The staging of her numbers is as good as anything you'd see anywhere, I realise this is in big part down to Madonna herself but I'm sure the effects couldn't have been accomplished as well if it wasn't for the excellent work of the BBC.

Duffy was probably the one artist that didn't attract a huge audience for the main stage.

Just checking out red button coverage right now of the Fratellis - strange thinking I was in that venue.

I know what you mean Jono I had that feeling last year, and even now watching them on TV I can't really relate to having seen them live. They tend to get a big sing along atmosphere going which feels really good, but then watching it back it seems a bit different without the togetherness of the crowd. :)

I'm watching Editors on red button now - they're excellent! I hadn't realised how good they are live.

What was the best part of the day Jono? I really enjoyed Ting Tings and Madonna on t' telly. Thanks for your coverage btw. Shame about the photos. Did you actually get a chance to speak to Scott today?

A LOT of people left when Madonna had done a few songs. I left too as it was dark and quite cold. Highlights for me was the Mills vs Lowe sound clash, Ting Tings and celebrity spotting as my Twitter page shows!

Yes I did speak to Scott in the guest area but he seemed to be stopped by so many I left him to it. Apparently I'm on his interviews list tomorrow. Looking forward to getting to go to the press area!

I'm gutted to have missed seeing Jo dressed as a banana, I hope that will be repeated at some point. If not I'll have to hunt for it on Youtube.

I hope you have a great time in the Press area tomorrow Jono - I can't wait to read the stories and interviews you're going to send us. :)

PS I'd like you to give Scott my love, thank you please. 8)

    • @lochnessa what an incredible feature, really do miss the games from that show
    • Life Hacks is on 20.00-22.00 on Monday 13th, Tuesday 14th & Wednesday 15th May - in place of Future Artists and Future Pop.
    • Brother or Lover? WhooooOOOOooooeoeehrheroooooooooo.
    • What's your morning routine when you're working?
    • I feel like we all know how they'll answer that!
    • Makes sense, I always assumed they all went for 1D members regardless.
    • Do you prefer doing Capital Breakfast to Radio 1 or the other way round?
    • Jesus christ, Olivia Rodrigo was around 3 years ago!?! I thought she was only born in 2019. Anyway. They are doing it to rival commercial networks, on the main 2 lists anyway with rotating them more. Which all in all is a pit of misery. I'm sick to bloody death of Stick Season, it's an utter bag of mediocre wank that makes me even prefer James Blunt circa 2005. Radio 1 still is more expansive however, loved stuff they play and make their own early days, like Jungle Back on 74 like last year.  They can't lose doing stuff that, or else they become bland like everyone else. They have done that for many years though. I heard a song on a March 2001 aircheck from Chris Moyles recently and rediscovered a song by Kings Of Convenience, called Toxic Girl. Totally lost over 25 years but totally love it like it's new. Radio 1 has always played the big time pop stuff since your nan was 3. But they always have and still do throw something on the playlists that isn't what everyone else has. I hope they continue to do that as it sets them apart.
    • I think they are looking too much into this and need to get a proper job where you have to get up at 5am.
    • Zayn's current song isn't on the R1 playlist so would be odd for him to do an interview I guess, not sure either would want it?
    • You have both presented together before your show on Capital. Have you spent time together as friends since, or is the reunion like getting to know one another all over again?   I’m a long time listener in my mid 30s and now outside the R1 target audience age… Chris is into barbecuing and Jordan is into air frying, have you both noticed a change in the other since the days of R1? And are you under any pressure to be on trend at Capital?
    • What do you both miss most about your time at R1?
    • How are you finding the early mornings, and having your afternoons free? Was it easy getting to grips with a different desk and play out system? Do you have any upcoming OBs and anything else exciting planned for the show that you can exclusively share with Unofficialmills? 😀
    • This research is based on the DJs’ voices - pitches, speech rates and fillers like ums and ahs they use - so it’s not affected by sound effects. But yes according to the report Scott is listed as a Radio 2 DJ instead of Radio 1.
    • The playlist has definitely got a bit narrower this year, it feels like. Artists like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Drake and  Doja Cat seem to be played in every show, even when they’re not on the playlist. Other artists who get a few plays a week, such as Niall Horan, always seem to have the same song played, in his case, Heaven. Whenever they dive into Calvin Harris’ backlog it always seems to be Slide and Promises pulled out, even though they’re two of his least upbeat songs. Most songs they play seem to have been from the 2020s, instead of throwing in a few older hits like Capital does, which is something I think they could do.
