'Friends you may know' on Facebook

It's quite a fascinating feature. I can quite happily sit there passing the time for ten or twenty minutes looking at what friends Facebook suggests I add. If I was more of a friends whore I'm sure I'd add a lot of them, but it does seem to suggest a lot of people I know or know of so it's pretty useful.

Most of the people I'm getting at the moment are people I tolerated at school and I never want to see again.

Haha, yeah same. It's like: "Look, you made my life a complete and utter misery at school, now why the heck would I want to add you on here?"

It's sometimes quite pleasing to add the low lifes and say 'hey, I'm more successful than you now'.

Yes, exactly.

Now some of them are wanting to add me.

If I still consider someone a friend I would have remembered to add them. It is perhaps only useful for people on my course who I haven't yet added through oversight. Nearly all the people it comes up with are from school though.

Some person who made 3 years of my school life a living hell decided to add me on Facebook a few weeks back. Strangely enough, I declined.

Seriously, I have no idea what he was thinking. That I'd be happy to see him? I hate him!

This girl 2 years below me at school tried to add me. Her Bebo page (no I don't use Bebo any more) used to read 'I like everyone except Lucinda, she's a b*tch' - I don't think I ever did anything to her. I don't really care what she thinks. She tried to add me on Facebook something like 5 times in 2 weeks before I blocked her and now she can't see me at all thankfully. I'll be happy to see her again.

What is it with these people? They obviously have no real understanding or empathy for what they put people through.

I know. If it was the other way round, I wouldn't bother adding the people that I terrorised.

I have some family members lurking round facebook and bebo now and they are people I don't want to know anything about my life.

I can now understand why Scott finds these sites quite invasive, not had that feeling before and I don't like it

I agree, I had a facebook under my own name but it was impossible to avoid people I didn't want to talk to without causing offence. The great thing about MySpace is you can call yourself anything and you don't even have to give MySpace your name (though I notice they've started asking for it every time I log in now).

Of course it is possible to create an email address just for facebook and use a slightly altered version of your name. What really annoys me is you can't do people's quizzes and so on without adding applications which then don't work unless you pester friends to take them too. :x

Ditto! And then sometimes, you'll click on the wrong link and end up getting vouchers for Asda instead of your results.

I get that as well... but then when I turn them down they just keep on trying to add me. At least you can actually block people now though.

That's the main reason I abandoned FB I dread to think how many bloody app requests I now have.

You can block applications and block certain people sending you applications. Has cut it down considerably for me.

It seems like Facebook, MySpace etc. have redefined the word 'friend'. It's sad. My friends are important to me and it seems to cheapen the concept to just anyone I vaguely know, or perhaps don't even know or like at all.

Hence why I don't add people I don't know/like.

Getting all nostalgic about going to uni, I want to stay in touch with all my friends, considering they're on the other side of the country to me, facebook is a good way to do that.

But you do get "friend collectors"... Can't help that much though.

They've gone and added "Facebook Chat" now. I foresee more offices banning Facebook now.

Oh dear oh dear. Gmail chat is bad enough, people talking at me when I'm just trying to check my email.

Facebook want to take over the world. They are removing the need for email, instant messaging and all other forms of communication really. I'm not sure I like it.

I hate the friends you may know section. There are a lot of people on there I know, but for a good reason, are not present on my "friends" list!

Fair enough... But if you've just joined facebook it'll probably help with the sifting through all the people you know.

It got really awkward once when 3 exs of mine were all together in that list.

    • Radio 1 generation meaning??  Today's 10-30 yr-olds? I doubt it. They'll still know Pete Tong though, because he is rhyming slang!
    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
