Not a massive jolt to the Rajars on Radio 2 even though Scott left.

BBC

BBC Radio 2: 12.37m weekly listeners, down 2% year-on-year, remains the UK’s biggest individual station.

Radio 2 Breakfast: 6.37m, down just 1% on the previous quarter despite three months of guest presenters.

Vernon Kay: 6.8m weekly listeners, his highest since 2024 and currently Radio 2’s biggest show.

BBC Radio 1: 6.9m, down 8% year-on-year.

Radio 1 brand: 7.55m when Radio 1 Dance (615k) and Radio 1 Anthems (584k) are included.

Greg James Breakfast: 3.76m, relatively stable, down 2% year-on-year.

BBC 1Xtra: 769k, up 6% year-on-year.

BBC Asian Network: 548k, also up 6% year-on-year.

BBC 6 Music: 2.59m, flat year-on-year and remains the UK’s biggest digital-only station.

6 Music Breakfast with Nick Grimshaw: 1.29m, up 3% year-on-year.

BBC Radio 3: 1.88m, down 3% year-on-year.

Radio 3 Unwind: 408k in only its second full RAJAR quarter.

Youth / pop competitors

Capital: 6.51m, down 7% year-on-year, around 400k behind the main Radio 1 station.

Capital brand: 8.9m across all its extensions, around 1.35m ahead of the expanded Radio 1 brand.

Capital Breakfast: 2.75m, slightly down year-on-year, versus Greg James on 3.76m.

KISS: big rebound, 1.75m weekly listeners, up 32% year-on-year.

KISS Breakfast: 668k, up 40% year-on-year following the arrival of Tyler West and Chloe Burrows.

Kisstory: 2.03m, up 3% and actually remains bigger than the main KISS station.

Hits Radio Network: 6.54m, down 6% year-on-year.

Hits Radio 90s: 428k, up 48%.

Hits Radio 00s: 377k, up 50%.

Big takeaway: Radio 1’s core audience has fallen fairly sharply, but its new Dance and Anthems extensions soften that decline. Capital is seeing a similar decline on its main station, while KISS is the standout youth-radio success this quarter with 32% growth.

Interesting post.

I have in recent years come to the sad conclusion that within reason most listeners are attracted to the overall station rather than the presenter so provided a station does nothing mad (the Danny Beard breakfast show on Radio 1) the stations are more affected by broader listening trends and the attractiveness of the tone and music of the station.

You still need a stable presenting team to avoid losing a lot of listeners but whether it is Sara Cox instead of Scott Mills, Jordan North instead of Roman Kemp or Vernon Kay instead of Ken Bruce, it all has much less impact than us radio geeks would like to think.

Yes the dial didn't move when Jordan left for Capital even if many on here have an issue with Jamie. Even the noise about Ken Bruce and Steve Wright leaving didn't make a big impact.

And that was a more extreme presenter shift than any of the examples I listed.

    • Because even they don’t know the who’s going to be on Going Home 😂
    • He’s had more cover in August than he’s had over his entire duration at the station 😂
    • James Cusack posted that he is doing 22 shows on R1 in Augusts so that means he will do 10 Weekend Breakfast Shows, 8 Going Home Shows, Covering Sam & Danni 1 time, Covering Dean 1 time, so that leaves 2 more shows in August so I would guess he will doing Going Home on Monday 31st August & Covering Jack on the Chart on Friday 28th August as Jack will probably be at R&L Festival
    • Not sure I can see a schedule with Trevor on afternoons and Spoony on drive, and even if so then it'd be easy enough to give Spoony drive now and have someone else cover Trevor. I very much doubt that about Greg, can's see him wanting to leave R1 anytime soon, nor would R1 bosses want him to leave. At minimum he'll want to break Moyles' record but even then can see him on the station a good while longer.
    • I think it’s more likely Spoony was meant for drive? Or and here’s my out there possibility. They want Greg James but he’s not ready to switch yet so a bit more work for Oo Gary davies and goodier
    • Does anyone actually know why they've stopped updating the schedules?
    • I'm afraid the Sky EPG has become the victim of the BBC's policy of not to update most of the schedules for this week, especially on the Breakfast and Going Home listings! 😆
    • But if it was OJ then surely the announcement would have come by now? Even if there was a delay due to working a plan to relocate production to Salford, that wouldn't take this long. My own guess, based on nothing more than a hunch, is that Trevor was the plan and that's been put on hold for obvious reasons. OJ could then maybe get afternoons...
    • Melvin’s got a radio 2 gig for the forseeable plus am sure I heard he said he was doing something with Ricky too. Ricky did some talksport cover  Nat agree is the big surprise! I’m not sure what she’s doing next as thought she’d have a good shelf life on Radio 1 and thought her and Vicky or Sian Eleri would be the next live lounge hosts.    Dean’s moving to London so that might be a clue but his choice and has something lined up. He did get promoted far too early but almost anyone replacing Scott would have been a downgrade hence was better for Matt and Moll to replace Dean when they knew they could improve a show.    James - nice guy but bit bland and I think his tight link commercial radio style has hindered him in terms of radio 1 and they probably needed Emil in permanently to build him up for daytime cover or future slots in 2/3 years.  Week starting 31st August is their last week and imagine new schedules start the following Monday
    • I think OJ - unless they’ve someone else in mind. OJ, I’d maybe move over to R2 Drive over R1 for.
    • Super late to this and had a reply written but didn’t post as got tied up with World Cup and wasn’t feeling too well. I’m surprised and not surprised by some of these changes  Ricky and Melvin felt like they were coming to an end but I feel sad RMC is coming to end. I do wonder what they’ll do next  Nat O Leary was a surprise - I thought she would have been one they’d have held on to. But am I right in thinking she had a job in fashion when she first started at Radio 1? James Cusack - also a surprise - it took so long for him to get a slot.  Dean - feel a bit sorry for him. Feel like he was promoted far too early and didnt get to bed himself in. The afternoon slot was a disaster and I was listening to Scott by then anyway. He’s really came across well on Early Breakfast but I guess there’s no opportunity for him on daytime. The I’m a Celeb appearance didn’t go well either but at least they finally changed the trial voting rules. Do hope he does well wherever he goes next  Swarzy - I can’t comment on   When are all the last shows - the last week of August? I’ll try and tune in if I can.     Really happy for Emil who I think should have had a slot a long time ago. Big potential for drive or breakfast in the future. Mylo and Rosie - I’m happy for too. I’m happy that they’ve managed to find a new permanent slot after being taken off Hits after so long. I’m not sure they are long term R1 but a massive coup for them all the same
    • Ha no, I did in the context that it appears Mollie is back! Mollie is down to do Future Pop on the 2nd September as well.
    • Matt and Mollie are back on the show titles from 1st September.
    • They have probably been told off for updating it and exposing the merry go round! 😆
