It is a real shame that James is leaving, I get that they needed to find Emil a show and I’m very pleased for him, but I’m sure there was room for both of them. Stick James on the chart which I think he’s excellent at, and Emil can still have weekend breakfast. Then you have James available as an extra person as cover too!

Thank you. At this point they may as well have took the opportunity to have Charlie & Jerry and M&M on Fridays and completely ditch the 'Friday is the weekend' thing. Only downside would be one less day for Sam & Danni but... they'll probably become lead breakfast cover now Dean's gone.

Agree with this. At the very least, Live Lounge should return to a Friday and you could either have the 'weekend' start at 1pm or with the chart. Either works.

Cover wise, it would be nice if there could be a bit of coordination with Matt & Mollie and Going Home's leave meaning that an established duo like Sam & Danni or Mylo & Rosie could cover instead of swapping in 1 presenter constantly. Maybe not all the time, but it is the done thing for Capital Breakfast to all be off together - or example.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that RMC did not mention this once today, which seems very strange?

I thought this was bizarre too especially given it was mentioned in Newsbeat. Even if they didn't want to give it loads of time, I expected a small acknowledgment that they've got 7 weeks left on the show.

I'll admit RMC is the daytime show I hear the least, but I was shocked to hear them only speak twice between 10:30 and 11am and play 5 songs in a row across 10:50 to 11:05am.

I'm not an insider, no. Maybe 'guarantee' was the wrong word. I just find it highly unlikely Rickie would suddenly get a R2 presenting gig just because Melvin does cover on the station, that's all I meant.

Anyway... all these changes and the best news is one of the things that hasn't changed- Greg still at the helm of Radio 1 Breakfast. Hopefully he keeps on going for a while yet.

Yes I do agree, however, I would've said years ago that it's unlikely Trevor Nelson would be on weekday daytimes or that Scott would only have a year and a bit on Breakfast so I'm trying not to grade anything as unlikely anymore!

To me them not speaking about it and not talking til 11 makes it look like they didn't know something

Where have they announced that GK Barry will be on on a Thursday?

BBC Media Centre says:

Further good news for Radio 1’s listeners today as GK Barry will join the station to host a series of shows across the year, kicking off with an initial run on 10 September at 1pm for 6 weeks. One of the UK’s most recognisable presenters and podcast hosts, and the voice behind the chart-topping ‘Saving Grace’ podcast, GK Barry is already a familiar voice to Radio 1 listeners, having previously presented across the station’s schedule. She’ll bring her trademark humour, honesty and energy to the brand-new show.

Ah ok, cheers 🙂

Overall I think the following:

`1. Great news for Emil, very happy that he's finally got a permanent slot but sad news about James, wasn't expecting him to go so soon...

2. I think Jerry & Charlie will be fun, but won't make any more judgement until I hear them. Think we all knew R&M were leaving soon though, so not very surprising.

3. Nat leaving is a big shock. I feel like her and Vicky have certainly improved over the past 2 years, and I was not expecting her to leave. Haven't heard much of Charley so unsure what to think.

4. Dean leaving is surprising. I feel like he's come to his element on EB, and it's a show that's perfect for his style. Very happy for M&R tho, feel like they're a big improvement.

5. Why GK Barry? Just why?

This Reddit Post has a comment from someone who says James is going back to commercial radio...

If true, that's good to hear he has something lined up. Sometimes commercial presenters making the leap to Radio 1 doesn't always work out. JK & Joel only last a few years on R1 before moving back to commercial

It's just a shame he waited that long after covering all sorts of slots, they finally give him a permanent show, for them to ditch him after a year and a half. I wasn't expecting him to stay forever but it seems a bit soon. Weekend breakfast is one show that doesn't need all the bells and whistles other shows provides imo, and i think he sat well there like Adele Roberts did.

Emil is massively deserving of a permanent show, and was inevitable... but i actually think at this point he's actually good enough to be on weekday daytime. A Katie/Vick/Emil trio on Going Home would've been perfect for me, but they're insistent on keeping Jamie on that show.

I wonder if James, Nat, Vicky, Dean etc were all told that there wasn’t a pathway to daytime for them and so all of them apart from Vicky chose to go. I’m taking that Reddit post with a pinch of salt but they will all probably be popping up on commercial radio in the near future (unless Nat has a TV gig).

This GK Barry thing is so weird, especially given she seems to be doing it solo. Couldn’t she have just done Going Home with Katie on a Thursday for six weeks?

It may well be that Emil’s weekend breakfast show is a short stint so he is regularly on there before he goes to going home or Matt and Moll’s show.

Surprised Swarzy has gone as well, given they’ve been seemingly quite cutthroat with departures it’s weird you wouldn’t get rid of Shanequa over her as she rarely does cover in the daytimes, which means you’d then get a formal partnership of Ore and Swarzy to use for cover.

They haven't necessarily 'got rid of' certain presenters – they'll be a host of reasons and factors behind each decision. Some will be simple, others less so.

But they might need cover for Matt and Mollie, and not Going Home.

If it's not his choice, I feel sorry for James – but I have to be honest that, while I enjoyed his show, it wasn't quite in keeping with other shows, perhaps. It felt like it skewed slightly older and more niche, perhaps, and contrasted a lot with the shows after (Group Chat). I think a station should be a broad church, the shows shouldn't all sound the same, but it's worth saying that those making these decisions have more to go off than we do. Listening figures, audience appreciation scores, focus groups, a particular strategy and so on. Also, as noted elsewhere, he has very little social media presence, which feels notable.

I have no doubt that James will go onto great things – he is talented and I like him, and even in a pool of more limited radio jobs than ever, he will be fine (I'm sure).

Wow ok then here's my take on all of this.

RMC was coming towards the end times; I didn't think that quickly! That's a partnership that's been going for years but tbf I think Charlie was probably the one that was going to be staying on ahead of Rickie and Melvin who felt like they were going to different things.

Really happy for Emil and Jerry, Emil has been great covering, and you would think he's going to be the main cover on Going Home when they need some presenters, he's already got a busy summer ahead doing quite a bit of that! I think the Charlie and Jerry paring sounds promising, they already have some bond when Charlie does her handover on Saturday evenings and Jerry has been a decent cover. He's going to be very busy with his shows! Also Mylo & Rosie is a great appointment to Early Breakfast, they have felt like the supply teacher over the last few months with the amount of cover they were given so it was inevitable they would get a permanent slot.

Really surprised and disappointed about James leaving, less so about Dean, he didn't quite gel as well as hoped and IAC didn't help his perception with the public. Nat is a surprising one, she must have something else lined up, I can't really judge her too much or Charley Marlowe as I haven't listened to them a lot.

I feel like GK Barry show would work better at a run of weekends 1-4pm rather than taking Matt and Mollie off for a day. It sounds like Radio 1 have plans for her beyond the six weeks that she will have but who knows what happens beyond the initial shift.

Some of the other changes are fine, moving the Indie show makes sense and so does the Chilliest Show be put later, it's better in the middle of the night than early evening. Does feel like the end of an era with Martha moving to Radio 1 Dance and therefore the end of a long slot held by Annie Nightingale before that coming to a close. The first look Chart being 3 hours is just very strange being longer than the actual chart show, it would have made more sense for it to be 7pm-9pm rather than Life Hacks.

Overall a lot of changes, a few positives, some disappointments and some change but it's ok in general.

Yeah, i'd say that's a fair assessment. I can't disagree with any of that 👍

Great summing up - I think RMC would have got another year but Melvin’s extended cover on radio 2 imo had brought that forward. Surprised at Jeremiah getting jt but he did deserve to get a permanent slot. I thought Charlie would want to be kept by radio 1 but not in that slot (Radio 1 Dance or doing Friday and Saturdays but fair play).

James I couldn’t see a pathway for unlike Emil so doing weekend breakfast and I dare say will dip in to cover weekdays makes sense.

Dean - I think he has got another offer and his pathway to daytimes again was blocked apart from Greg cover and did think he would be in demand - Hits is the obv one

Nats the shock departure imo - I’d have thought Minah rather than Charley but there we go.

Chart first look sounds a really lazy show but does sound like Lauren will be Jacks cover on chart. Only 1 day week show gives her cover opportunities.

GK Barry is the weird one - that should have been put as an evening or weekend slot.

I think where Radio 1 was wise was having his replacement be Emil Franchi who is also a proper 'radio nerd' as Greg would put it.

If they'd replaced him with a TikToker like Charley Marlowe with no offence intended to her I wonder if the reaction to James Cusack's departure might've been stronger.

Though to be fair to Charley she's done her fair share of cover over recent months on off-peak slots so I wouldn't want to tar her with the Maya Jama brush as Maya seemed to instantly have the red carpet rolled out for her on Radio 1.

Was about to say about Emil. I fully expect Jamie's appearances to be sporadic as ever but with Vick being back full time.. there will less need for constant Going Home cover.

Though I can see Vick still needing the odd day or so off for Countryfile filming even if she does go back to "full-time" so there will still be cover opportunities on Going Home.

Obviously the presenters are going to make their posts as positive as possible but it sounds like Nat has been poached as well as Dean.

We will find out soon enough but I just read that as Dean's arrogance sadly

    • Hi all, I followed Innuendo Bingo very closely back when I was a teenager, because the silliness of it got me through a lot of hard times. I only started from round about March 2012, but religiously downloaded and clipped out every episode from then until more or less when it was discontinued in 2019/2020. Last night I was going back through my collection and through this site, trying to pick up the last handful of early episodes I'd never saved, and found a file on my computer that I think I'd ripped from YouTube in about 2015 for the Innuendo Singo episode, where they played innuendo clips from various songs in amongst the normal clips. I'd been looking for this episode specifically because I'd forgotten I'd downloaded it, but was sure I'd listened to it before and could no longer find it anywhere on YouTube or online more generally. It's not available on Unofficial Mills (although the December 2011 podcast episodes go up to the 13th, the dates seem to be out of sync by one day), so it's possible I might be the only person who still has a copy of this. If anyone wants to listen to it, or to add it to the Innuendo Bingo clip section, I've put it online here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/4vvia597jaynl3qlh5ljy/2011-12-13-Innuendo-Singo.mp3?rlkey=5vldu92ues43gd6zos0leczls&st=xf6lp0mc&e=1&dl=0 (or https://www.mediafire.com/file/xfgkbuqfyc3y7jd/2011-12-13_Innuendo_Singo.mp3/file). Hope this is enjoyable/useful for someone!
    • So they take Mylo & Rosie of Sam & Dannis show description then they put them on again
    • I’m have no interest in listening to GK Barry so it shall be Sounds or Spotify for me.
    • Agree completely about not having her on a Thursday, but 2 solid weeks would most likely be too much!!
    • Let's hope so, as forcibly taking off one of the best shows on the station one day a week would rival Aled's employment of Danny Beard as his worst decision.
    • Matt was doing this musical thing so could be that?
    • This GK Barry thing is so weird. Surely they’d give her a slot in the summer instead of ripping up the schedule at the start of the year. Casual listeners will think the change is permanent as it’s lined up with the rest of the schedule changing.    Surely doing the two week stint that James is doing on Going Home would be better.
    • Oh I’d forgotten about GK Barry. I do wonder whether Matt & Mollie requested to drop Thursdays or were forced. It’s so random to have a different show on a Thursday afternoon
    • Some notes about the schedules released from the 5th September. James is still down to do Weekend Breakfast, it might be his last weekend. Nat and Vicky are down to do the 4th-5th September but generic listings on the 6th Sep. Callum Leslie in for Lauren on Life Hacks. Looks like there will be an Indie show on both the 6th and 8th September as it moves to it new slot. GK Barry begins her run of shows on the 10th September, it's called The GK Barry Show on Radio 1.

    • Interesting how it still says Group Chat with Nat & Vicky?
    • New weekday schedule starts W/C 7th September. Also as predicted, Mylo & Rosie start at 4am.
    • Agreed. I wasn't expecting the gap to be as long as this, and we've not even got an announcement yet. I know they needed to get breakfast sorted, but we knew who was taking over within 4 weeks of Gary stepping in.
