Jamie Laing’s appearances on Going Home

I am writing with concerns about the amount of time JamieLaing and to a lesser extent Vick Hope are absent from Radio 1 Going Home.

Going Home is a major part of Radio 1 and is titled Going Home with Vick, Katie and Jamie. It is 4 days a week Monday-Thursday and deserves consistency.

Jamie is away an awful lot, does not appear committed to the station in terms of his attendance and that his social media is geared solely towards his private projects and little mention of Radio 1 compared to the other presenters.

I’m not against presenters having other private work but believe that having your name to such a show means that for most weeks you should be presenting your show most days the show is on. I appreciate presenters sometimes require extended time off for personal or other commitments but this should be the exception than the norm. I strongly believe that the current situation is far from satisfactory for the following reasons. 1. It is not fair on the listeners to have such a disrupted show not knowing who is on and it’s not fair on Katie to keep having to adjust to different cohosts 2. I dont believe it is fair on the current talent who live and breath radio who would be more committed to Radio 1 and I dare say at a better value show rate to license fee payers which in this day and age of cuts which I hate to see but understand is necessary.

Thank you for getting in touch with your complaint.

Feedback is really important to us because it helps us improve our programmes and services. So thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.

We have reported the concerns raised in your complaint to programme makers and senior managers across the BBC.

Because the BBC is a public service, we must ensure our response to complaints is proportionate. We investigate issues further if the BBC’s editorial guidelines or regulatory standards might have been broken. This relates to things such as:

• The seriousness of the issue

• The potential to mislead and if there is an issue of harm to the complainant

• The nature of audience response and possible damage to trust and confidence in the BBC

If we receive large numbers of complaints about an issue, we may make our response available online.

In this instance we won’t be investigating the issue in more detail but we would like to assure you that we value your feedback and have shared it with the right people at the BBC.

It’s very much appreciated.

Thank you,

BBC Complaints Team

Unless it has an impact on listener figures I don't think the complaints about Going Home are going to go anywhere. The figures have been very healthy, it remained a popular show when Jordan North left, so the listeners are quite content with how it's going. You will recall Kelly Osborne and even Vernon Kay were regularly off the schedules. Vernon was renamed "Vern-off" by Moyles for his annual leave total. It's not unusual.

They were 1 day a week slots at the weekend very different to prime drive time

I am not a fan of Jamie Laing and my Radio 1 listening declined a lot after Jordan left but....

(a) I don't think it's a valid complaint to say somebody doesn't work enough

(b) I really become convinced that many radio stations are more about habit than presenter.

Need to get it over to points of view, is Anne Robinson still at it?

Points of view these days with Tina (yes that one) is back on the autumn. Will see what the FOI brings with regards to Jamie.

Fair enough to Vick Hope for her dig on Instagram

appear to have been catching strays from the radioheads who think I’ve just not been arsed to turn up to work! (Not that anyone should feel the need to justify or explain a phased return from parental leave, KIT Day arrangements, their childcare choices etc, but here we are…) It’s a Not Today Satan day.

Yep and close to what i've commented a few times when people suggest getting rid of Vick due to her part-time schedule!

I haven’t seen that much regarding Vick Hopes complaints and I genuinely think most of the time she has been being a mum and flexible working makes sense.

She sort of explained it fairly well and knew where we were at. Jamie imo doesn’t get the same leeway, wouldn’t have begrudged a bit of paternity leave and holiday but extensive time off for other business interests is taking the p

    • Jamie does a full week
    • Saturday 8th August: Joel Dommett in for Dermot O'Leary  Ellie Taylor in for Emma Willis Sunday 9th August: Ricky Ross (lead singer of Deacon Blue) is presenting Sounds Of The 70's. W/C Monday 10th August: Joel Dommett is doing a second week on drivetime.   Clara Amfo sits in for Trevor Nelson on Thursday 13th August, with Mark Goodier sitting in on Friday 14th (Spoony's in Monday-Wednesday)
    • I was talking specially about summer ones. The Halloween ones are always mystery and never hunts (because they’re supposed to be small and quick presumably).
    • Weekend Breakfast can become a bit of a content wasteland though. Look at the difference in show that Matt & Mollie did there compared to weekend afternoons. I totally agree with your point though, both shows are interchangeable but I think it’s a good call to have Mylo & Rosie on for 5 mornings a week. I haven’t seen it confirmed anywhere, but are we assuming they’ll still be Salford too? Could Emil being based in London mean that show is moved back there because weekends already have other Salford based shows?
    • Would the Murder Mystery from Halloween 2022 count?
    • Early and weekend breakfast I see as pretty similar. I expect Emil to do be doing quite a bit of weekday cover especially on going home so probably makes sense he does weekend breakfast.
    • That's a good point about Giant Detention but I wouldn't say there's been an equal mix. We've had Giant Jigsaw, Giant DJ Hunt and Giant Face Off which were all hunt ones and before Giant Detention I think the last mystery one would've been Summer Breakout before Vick and Jordan started drive time.
    • Now I think about it, I’m surprised Mylo & Rosie and Emil Franchi weren’t the other way around. Wouldn’t it make more sense for a duo with years of breakfast experience to do weekend breakfast rather than be wasted on early breakfast? Not that Emil isn’t also more than capable but out of him and M+R pairing it would make more sense if he was on earlies?
    • I didn't get a chance to reply. There aren't really many shocks though maybe; - James Cusack is a surprise exit but maybe he has something else lined up. A daily high profile show on a big network is likely to be better financially than being stuck on weekend breakfast at Radio 1 with no clear progression. - Going Home is clearly going to limp on as it is. - It feels strange Vicky Hawksworth is staying as no shows seem to have worked for her yet.  The new set-up for her doesn't feel like it will last forever. Nothing else is much of a surprise, presenters leaving that have reached the natural end of their Radio 1 life, full-time shows for tried and trusted cover and a big promotion for Jeremiah who has hardly been off daytime radio over the past year to 18 months.
    • Of course, me with short memory, that's likely! 😆
    • I would imagine they would be covering Going Home whilst Katie is on holiday
