Someone has asked the BBC what it plans to do with the 82 Mills plaque. https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/scott_mills

I don't think they'll answer that, I think the studio was always known as 82A never officially renamed although Greg did mention at the time that their booking system showed it as that no doubt it is back to 82A now with a quick input from IT

Loads of videos on R1s insta of Scott still, they don't seem to have erased him from existance. BTW remember Scott's old theme tune on R1, the dance pop one, it is actually a dance track called Sober by Lotado they just used the instrumental for Scotts theme and beds.

Not surprised they’re not going back 4+ years to get rid of all of Scott’s old videos given very few people will actually be scrolling back to find them, and those that are probably wont be offended by him still being on the insta.

I know it’s TalkTv but they were saying Scott Mills must have done some extremely awful because the BBC are wiping all trace of him everywhere. They also raised a good point if the BBC knew about the investigation in 2017, why did they sit on it and do nothing but promote Scott even further. However, when it came out it was an underaged minor, they sacked him. Does that make it ok then if the person was over 18? I also hate to say this but Scott must be guilty of something because he has not come out to defend any of the claims made against him except to confirm it was him who the Met Police investigated in 2017. If he was innocent would you not want to clear your name and start an unfair dismissal claim against the BBC? It doesn’t look good.

Lots of valid points there.

One thing to understand is that DJs are not on the same contracts as you or I, they are not PAYE employees on the payroll on a regular contract of employment ergo are subject to less stringent employment rules and what is stipulated in the contract, unlike for example, someone who works in your local Tescos or at the Bank.

It is important to add here before going on; staff who work in management (like Aled) or production/music team (Matt Fincham and co)/social media team/programming and so on and so forth are permenent employees (like the guy who works at Tescos) and would be in a permenent Contract of employment which would have a framework for discipline and grievances and be covered possibly by union protection. This is why Production teams, specially at weekends actually work on two shows usually in a shift, exceptions are probably breakfast and drive and on R2 Vine.

News staff like Callum Leslie, or Tina Daheley or indeed Rosin Hasty all work for the "News" arm of the BBC, so they come under the same teams as the presenters on the BBC news channel and again are permenent staff, which is why Rosin was allowed to move into another arm of "news" when she had her baby and moved role, no doubt she applied for an obtained another role within "news" when she came off of the Breakfast show. Another example of this was Tulip who did R1 news on drive when Scott was there, and then moved over to TV news still working under the same umbrealla. Tina sometimes presented on BBC news as well in the past when she was on R1 breakfast (don't think she has since being on R2 and remember that dates back to 2019 when ZB got the show off of CE.

Now you ask how can Tina cover Vine... well that is like a side hussle, so she will be paid an ad hoc fee as a freelancer to cover for Jermery the weeks he is off, which is outside her permenent employment, so if she does news on Breakfast that is her "working day" and the part where she covers 12-2 is a freelance jobby she is paid ad hoc fees for.

They are freelance and contracted for delivery of their programmes, so for example Jack Saunders will be contracted to deliver the NMS 4 days a week and the chart on Friday, he will be expected to adhere to the BBCs code of cunduct social media policies and all. He would be expected as part of his contract to attend events such as Big Weekend and other things.

The Contract would read something like x amount of shows per year, allowing for time off. DJs don't have to apply for annual leave like you or I, they just tell management probably at the start of the year what weeks they are off, and of note they probably don't get paid for leave as well.

I did a quick online search for a BBC DJ Contract and it came back with this

6. Disrepute and Behaviour

Disrepute Clause: A standard clause allowing the BBC to terminate the contract immediately if the DJ brings the BBC into disrepute.

Code of Conduct: Adherence to BBC staff standards regarding behaviour.

7. Confidentiality and Data Protection

Confidentiality: A requirement not to disclose information about future music playlists, guest appearances, or confidential BBC business.

GDPR: Compliance with data protection laws regarding listener information.

So any of those could apply in this case I would say, we just don't know the ins and outs, and it's wrong to speculate. The reason we probably haven't heard from Scott since is likely legal. Either bound by an NDA, or other legal reasons.

The main thing is he is alive, not in a good place, but alive. I worry about what happens to him and Sam, and they could be going through hell as a couple over this, you just don't know.

I know it's mostly irrelevant to the overall post but to nitpick slightly, Tina is still a relief presenter on tv news bullitens on BBC One. She presented the News At Six and Ten a few weeks back

Ah there we are then, thanks for the clarification.

Also of note........ this is why Moyles was not allowed to appear on a "rival" brand until 2015. he had signed a new contract in 2011 for R1 up to December 2014. This meant that even after he finished breakfast and was offered the late night slot on R1 and Sounds of the 80s on R2 as a package, he decined and was on "gardening leave" from September 2012 until December 2014, and low and behold come 2015 he appears on Radio X. Moyles was never in breach of his contract ergo remained under BBC rules for that period of time.

Now when Mistajam left R1, that was quicker. I would imagine his contract was coming to an end and he likely secured the role at Global some months before to effectively run and manage Cap Dance, which he has done a blinding job of (he is the station manager there I believe, or certinaly was when it started and he was in charge of programming etc as well as being a DJ) so when his BBC Contract came up for renewal he would have gone into negoitations and said he wanted to end it on that date in 2020 and move on (wow that is six years ago), again not in breach. The same goes for Ken Bruce, who was coming up for renewal and left for a rival brand.

Steve Wright was different, he was still in contract for SWITA even when Scott took over, and was being paid as such for the remaining time he was there, it may have changed mid way through before he passed to reduce to Sundays and specials, but largely he was still being paid for his weekday slot.

The Grimmy and Greg swap happened mid contract as well, which is why Grimmy just saw out his current breakfast contract on drive and it changed to Vick and Jordan post covid.

In Scott's case, it seems the BBC found him in some kind of breach of a clause of his contract that caused them to enact the termination clause, it may have only been one small timy clause, but still a broken contract is a broken contract. With these types of contract there is no "hearing" or "process" once it is breached it will be down to a board and likely signed off by the DG to terminate it. This is why it was so quick. I was in the pub earlier and someone (knowing I am in radio) spoke to me about it, and said the problem is... had the BBC not acted and the mirror leaked it, imagine the outcry then, yet they've done the "right thing" with due dillagence and still it's deemed as "outrageous" by some.

Whatever happened happened, and will all be protected by NDAs and binding documents, what is no good and making absolutely no difference, and just fanning the flames, is people like on the FB Group threatening to boycott the station, and "demand" Scott's reinstatement, that ship has sailed and the BBC aren't going to act on the say so of a few keyboard warriors (says he typing essays on the subject), yes the R2 show will loose listenership as a result, like many of us have gone back to Greg, or some have moved to commercial, whatever you choose is up to you.

Of course all of the above is purley in a clinical sense as well, not that I am a hater of Scott, far from it, but being in media, and my job outside of media, I deal in hard facts, data and reports, and the only ones of those we have are what has happened and what statements have been made. it would be wrong to make assumptions based on that.

Another side note… I would imagine it is in contracts like breakfast and drive that you “will” be off over Christmas and Easter and new year. Notice how Greg never works a Christmas now neither does Sara (Christmas Day was an exception and not since the Moyles days has a resident breakfast presenter done their own show on the day itself)

of course these days all the R1 lot get Christmas to new year off for the takeover but in years before that weekday breakfast used to be Scott most of the time over the festive period when he was on drive and afternoons and over on 2 it’s been Mark the last few years

like Greg as well always used to cover shows over Christmas before he did drive as well and you’d get a mixup of the weekend presenters covering weekday slots

In community radio it usually works the same one station I work with the resident breakfast presenter has two weeks off every Christmas and we all take a turn covering it (not so much me as I am drive and I had a week off this year anyway)

but it certainly is on R1 and 2 the weekday breakfast and drive hosts never work Christmas time

Rajars don’t cover the Christmas limbo period which is prob why. Easter I’d imagine is a personal choice. I don’t think there are as many production teams as previous plus weekend presenters generally doing 3 day weeks which is why it’s easier now to give practically everyone Christmas limbo week than have disruption to schedules going on through January. It doesn’t apply now I don’t think but I remember Aled saying that time off was stricter before and was generally mandated that Chris Moyles and Scott couldn’t be off at same time but made an exception once when they came to an agreement Sara was able to cover breakfast and Greg covered Scott. Dev covered Greg and Tom Deacon covered Dev

Yeah it often used to be the case that Scott would cover Moyles for two weeks then have his own two after remember the time he covered for Moyles and then flew straight from the show at 10 to the US to film that Hasslehoff thing so you would be missing Scott for four weeks on his own slot, I worked out once Scott used to not do 1-4 for about 3.5/4 months of the year in Grimmys tenure half of it his own holidays and half covering for Grimmy

A few?? Mills was THE breakfast dep through the latter part of Zoe Ball, then all of Sara, all of Moyles, all of Grimmy and some of Greg and I think (he said so himself) he has done the breakfast show more times than some of the permenent hosts (Wright? Kevin?)

Not sure how close, they defo socialised a lot together in the 00s and early 10s, and on Moyles last show Scott sent him a massive bunch of flowers, they seemed to be pally on the longest show as well

Based on more recent interviews with Scott, I’m sure he said that the press were ready to out him and so people at R1 said his best option was to choose a paper to get ahead of the story. It was a very different time back then, but I’m not sure it would have felt like genuine support from his colleagues if they were adding to the pressure.

Yes @xxladybarefootxx I think you are right there, I remember seeing an interview with Scott where he said the press were about to publish something about it and he went to them and headed off the story at the pass. What a way to repay him in the last few weeks.

That's cool always thought they hated each other for some reason

There was a nice pic on insta of Scott Moyles and Greg together at Coldplay in Paris a couple years ago I mean they all went together so no beef I would say

    • They're just quoting the same Sun article.
    • Daily Mail now also reporting Vernon and Sara have ruled themselves out of taking over Breakfast
    • Would make sense though as does a sort of quiz I think midnight mastermind so could do that sort of thing on breakfast
    • OJ and his family are also based in Manchester, which is why the overnight slot works well for him. I just can't see it personally. The Sun are known to create fake 'insider' stories so i'd take it with a pinch of salt.
    • Can you elaborate if possible can't be bothered to subscribe lol
    • Based on what I read I don’t think it will be Sara Cox
    • Sara was talking about women getting promotions in work places and should be proud of strong women earlier on 👀
    • …a “wild card”, as one insider put it. It could be proven to be wrong but that’s what I always thought. It will be someone you don’t expect
    • I’ve read it, basically it won’t be Sara Cox or Vernon Kay. It will be an outsider like OJ Borg, someone who isn’t a household name
    • Can't read the article its subscription only
    • https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/38800752/scott-mills-radio-2-breakfast-show-replacement-presenters/
    • Sara Cox and Vernon Kay are NOT interested in taking over the Radio 2 Breakfast Show. Insiders suggest the BBC are looking to pick a “wildcard”, someone who isn’t too big of a star but will offer long term dependability. I said this before, it will be someone you don’t expect. Could it be OJ Borg?
    • And that is no reflection on Scott as a professional, it's just an element of radio he wouldn't have delved into for some years. Specially since 1998 being at the BBC as they have teams doing all that background work for the shows and the presenter literally turns up and does a show. Even when I am voice tracking for Stations via software like Myriad anywhere or Playoutone Web VT, you still have to make changes, like adding music to the hour as it is short, and making sure everything flows, and the right songs are next to the right songs, for example if I have a song > sweeper > song > link > song and the song after the sweeper has a 30 sec intro but the song I am linking into doesn't I will swap the order about so I can use the one with the intro to talk into. At the BBC the producers will sort that kind of detail as the show runs.
    • With Apps like Radio.co or citrus it is pretty easy to set one up these days to run in the cloud and upload music and jingles to it to rotate and then take it over live if you wanted to. I help run a station on radio.co which runs on music and jingles and pre recorded hour bloks of shows and uses alot of syndicated content as well to fill hours up. I would imagine he has a lot of music already in his storage from when he does DJ sets, but to run a sucessful online station you need a database of thousands of songs, I have over 23K songs on my hard drive at home, of varying genres and still haven't got "everything" but am able to produce 13 shows a week using it but you have to master your software and music rotations, with programmes like musicmaster or music1, which as a presenter on BBC I suspect Scott himself hasn't delved into production or programming for at least 20 years, because those stations will have teams doing it for you, you just come in and play the songs and do the links, where as to run a station you have to be programming, producing and all the rest. It is a never ending job, even for my own database I have to download each track (legally and paid) upload it to the database, categorise it, set the intro, extro and hook, and all that before scheduling the following weeks "logs" aka playlists for each day of the week.
    • Thank you, me as well.. still in shock about it, I have gone back to Greg and bit of Jordan now.  Its a tragety for fans and the radio industry as a whole, and the tabloids are keeping on about it and will do until a new host is announced, then it will be all about "they only got this show because of..." and the new host will have to unpack and digest that they are only being promoted (saying promoted because I am working on the basis it will be Sara but could stand corrected by that statement) because of this incident, when Scott had potentially the same length ahead of him as say Chris Evans or Zoe.  I am still reeling and getting used to the fact he is not there, and just hope he is ok and being looked after.
