With Melvin making his R2 debut tomorrow, just wondering which current R1 presenters we can see being the next to make the traditional transfer to R2 when the time comes? Obviously Scott’s been the latest and it looked for a while like Adele would be next but she disappeared from broadcasting after she left R1.

I personally think other than Melvin, Matt (either with or without Mollie, both would probably work) and Pete stand out as most likely to do it. Dean also got the tone completely right when he appeared on the Jeremy Vine show quite a while back so maybe he’s a shout but it’s probably too early to tell for him.

I’m not sure about Greg but possibly Pete Tong eventually. Dean I reckon will go to 5 live or to Ulster

I think Greg will be around for a long time - I reckon the inner geek wants to break Moyles record then go on for ten years and maybe quit in 2028

He'll for sure be there for the next birthday celebration in 2027 to host a special breakfast show

Talking on this - I wonder who Scott's main cover will be, we have had OJ Sara and Mark in for him now since he took over? curve "ball" would Zoe become the cover now she's established back on weeeknds? or do you think they are easing Sara back into it ready for a two week holiday in Summer? Sara was the main cover for Evans's tenure and got dropped when Zoe took over for Fearne then Nikki and Gaby they seem to have moved away from this "outsider" coming in to cover and especially now not Gaby or Nikki as they have other gigs

Err no I very much doubt Zoe will be covering breakfast anytime soon. Mark, Sara and OJ seem to be enough choices for cover plus any bank holiday one off specials

No chance Zoe will cover breakfast. Would be a surprise to see her covering any weekday show tbh.

Looking back at this I would say now that Sara is the main cover - I think she has been reestablished as it now

With OJ covering on bank holidays. She is the best person for the job however... they're going to end up with a situation like Scott covering R1 breakfast back in the day, where she spends quite a bit of time off her own slot covering Breakfast, plus her own holiday and other commitments.

She's been filming for something recently which has meant she's been off several days a week since May. She was off last week, on breakfast this week, OJ is on Mon/Tues next week, then She's off the following two weeks.

Back on topic, I think there's quite a few of the current Radio 1 presenters who would be able to adapt to Radio 2's style in the future. It's more of question of how many of them will actually end up there. With much of R2's line up changed over the past couple of years, it's quite possible we won't see much movement there, and R2 management might even decide to look elsewhere to bring in new presenters in future.

I worked out once Scott spent 3 months of a year off his own slot in the Moyles days and more like 4 in Grimmys days, six weeks of his own holiday and projects, six covering Grimmy plus some ad hoc days

Mollie and Katie will end up at Heart. Rickie and Melvin will end up on the R2 extension. Charlie on capital Dance. I can't see any presenters heading to r2 anytime soon. Greg I think will take a break from radio completely after his stint on breakfast and then maybe take over as R1 controller after Matt who replaces Aled. Sian Eleri I can see as a weekend R2 host

I really can’t see Greg or Matt as a Radio 1 Controller, it’s usually a producer who goes to the controller roles, having a presenter would be weird. Also Greg is really passionate and clearly loves being on the radio so taking a break wouldn’t be expected. Rickie and Melvin wouldn’t really work on a Radio 2 extension (if that actually happens) in my opinion since it’ll be based around older music like 50s/60s/70s so it would be someone like Gary Davies, Tony Blackburn or they’re get a commercial presenter to come back to host. Sian Eleri would probably go to Radio 2 at some point, maybe taking over Radio 2 Unwinds on a Sunday?

With Dermot doing an Alternative Sounds of the 00s show it would be interesting to see when a Sounds of the 00s show will appear on Radio 2, and maybe we’ll see someone from Radio 1 move across to host that. Sounds of the 80’s started in 2013 and Sounds of the 90’s in 2020 so around 2027 would be the time to start a 00s based show on Radio 2, especially with Radio 1 20’s being launched this year. Sara Cox moved across from Radio 1 and hosted SOT80s and Fearne was only at Radio 1 a few years prior to SOT90s launch.

Aled Haydn Jones was a presenter before he was controller, he did The Surgery and Chris Moyles Breakfast Show. I could see Matt going into Controller because he’s already in managerial roles with his games and puzzles company and he does some tv producing like that Make Me A Prime Minister show. I agree about Greg he’d rather be on air.

Aled was more of a producer than presenter, he did do the Surgery but was a producer on The Chris Moyles Show and contributed as a presenter like how producer Tom or Amy contribute on Greg’s show. Since Matt’s main role is a presenter I think it would be unlikely for him to become Radio 1 Controller since his main focus at Radio 1 isn’t production like Aled’s was.

Matt's production company has done a few TV shows I think - I can completely see him moving behind the scenes more generally (maybe not as controller!) when presenting work dries up, he's a smart guy.

I can't see many of the current presenters at R2 for an age. Melvin, Mollie and Katie are most likely and they're just as likely to go into/back into commercial for a while as they're fairly mainstream and universally liked.

    • As for the the future... hopefully a bit of stability is brought to Going Home. It just feels like it's still in a temporary limbo post Jordan... two years on. It's good having a stable period for a while. Greg is sounding better than ever so I wouldn't mind him going on for a few more years. Mid mornings will probably get a refresh eventually, but for now RMC sound fine (i do think they've been wasted in the Live Lounge slot a bit, but i doubt they're going to move to another slot at this stage). Matt & Mollie are great, I don't think many would disagree. I think they will potentially be on afternoons for a few years now. They were wasted on weekend afternoons for too long. As for any potential future moves. I think Sam & Danni are future breakfast hosts.. whether that's via a weekday daytime slot.. who knows 🤷. I think they're doing good job on weekend afternoons and doing a few more years there will help them build up to take a weekday slot in future. I do enjoy James Cusack on weekend breakfast, and was happy when he got a permanent show, but realistically I'm not sure where else he could progress in the schedule (weekend afternoons maybe for a couple of years if Sam & Danni get to move up?).  I can definitely see Lauren Layfield getting a much bigger role in future. I don't think they signed her up to just do Life Hacks for her whole Radio 1 tenure. Radio 1 are lucky that they now have so many go to cover presenters (some better than others) who they can potentially look at getting on board full time in future. The one person who should be at the front of the queue for getting a permansnt gig is Emil Franchi.
    • There's regulary a lot of chat about potential changes in the future on here and other forums so I thought I'd start a thread for anyone to input their thoughts on current Radio 1 output, any potential changes in future etc. As it stands.. I think the station overall is sounding good. Presenter wise, I think most people are in the right places. Going Home for me is the only let down on the schedule. It's not just the endless roulette of who's presenting with Katie, but i just don't think it's strong enough for what's meant to be the second biggest show on the network. One of the main features is 'Who's In The Box?'. When you compare it with content on the Breakfast Show and Matt & Mollie.. it's just nowhere near strong enough as a main feature. I know Jamie is apparently popular with the target audience, and he does seem a nice bloke but as well documented, he spends more time off air than he does on. For me personally, the strongest partnership i've heard on that show since Jordan quit is Katie and Emil.

    • That's correct. Vick according to the schedule is Mondays only for now and Jamie is Monday-Tuesday with the schedule both saying he's in and on not in on Wednesdays.
    • Absolutely LOVED the 1tros! Listening back to this brings back lots of memories! Thank you for posting
    • Spoony in for Sara Cox on Wednesday 25th February.

    • Scott opened Thursday by immediately clocking the pace of the inbox, saying it was “one of those mornings where you can tell people have woken up ready to talk.” Ellie Brennan and Tina Daheley were both in studio, with Scott checking in on them and joking that “we haven’t even warmed up yet and you’re all already in full voice.” The early links were light, with Scott narrating what was coming up and reminding listeners they were heading into “a proper Thursday show.” There were quick resets, music breathing space and familiar back-announcing, with Scott repeatedly acknowledging how fast messages were landing and half-laughing that “this is already a lot before seven.” Ellie noted that voice notes were stacking up unusually early, while Tina commented that people seemed keen to respond to each other as much as the programme. Motherhood chat, but not a phone-in The main theme emerged around motherhood and social media expectations, introduced by Scott reading a listener message about feeling like she was “constantly failing compared to what I see online.” Scott paused on it, saying “this comes up a lot, doesn’t it,” but was careful to keep the show moving rather than letting it settle into a single-issue phone-in. Ellie talked about how curated feeds distort reality, while Tina pointed out that “nobody posts the day where everything went wrong.” Scott reframed the discussion several times, reminding listeners that “you’re hearing highlights, not real life,” before deliberately breaking the run with music and a reset, saying they’d “come back to this — but not all at once.” Voice notes, relief and shared laughs As voice notes came in, the tone varied. Some were reflective, others lighter, with Scott reacting in the moment rather than letting each one sit heavily. When one mum admitted she didn’t enjoy every moment, Scott replied simply, “you’re allowed to feel like that,” before immediately moving on to the next message to stop it lingering. Ellie noted quietly that a lot of messages ended with apologies — “sorry if this sounds awful” — which Scott picked up on, saying, “you all keep apologising — you don’t need to.” He then undercut the intensity by joking that “this has turned into group therapy before 7am,” before laughing and playing a record. Listeners responded to each other as much as the show, which Scott acknowledged on air, saying it felt like “people talking to people rather than just talking to us,” while still steering the programme forward. Pause for Thought and breathing space Pause for Thought slotted neatly into the running order, continuing the theme without deepening it. The speaker focused on compassion, comparison and letting go of unrealistic expectations. Scott thanked them afterwards, saying it “fits with what people have been saying this morning,” and deliberately left a short pause before moving on. Ellie observed that the slot felt like “a natural breather” in the show, which Scott agreed with, before resetting the mood with music and lighter links. The handover Scott handed over to Vernon Kay by briefly outlining what the morning had been about. Vernon picked up on the listener response, saying it sounded like “one of those shows where people really got involved.” Scott agreed, replying that “they really did today,” and mentioned the volume of messages still waiting.
