At least it only seems to be a summer thing (for now). That's the only positive I can find.

The more time goes the more I'm convinced Jamie will be part of the next breakfast team post Greg. He seems to have a hold on Aled and be indulged in a way no other Radio 1 DJ is.

I hope not but at this point I think you're right. I know the comic relief challenge showed him appearing to sacrifice something and endeared him with the audience (same thing that happened with Paddy McGuinness on Radio 2, show was unpopular before doing his own extreme CiN challenge that endeared him to the audience and made him and the show more popular) and that was deliberately done and he has got better as a presenter but I still think he's being unfairly promoted over decent or even great DJs (both on R1 and otherwise) who have worked their way up through either commercial, BBC local or student radio.

Its irritating because aside from Jamie the station and Aled seem to have gone off that with not keeping Danny Beard and moving Sam and Danni and effectively Jerry to a bigger slot and giving James, Swarzy, Ore, Lauren, Shanequa etc permanent slots and keeping Emil, Conor and others in the mix for cover. I was hopeful that they were sticking with finding good existent radio talent rather than just picking a name from outside of radio to attract people because they are a name whether or not they are any good at Radio. The Jamie or Danny Beard or further back Maya Jama type of Radio 1 hiring. I know it could be short term for the summer for it appears they are going back to going for influencers or tv personalities or podcasters reality tv stars instead of using the good or great radio talent either at R1 already or other new voices out there in the UK

I get about whoever said it is more newsworthy about Jamie's wife co-hosting with him rather than Emil or Lauren or James or whoever because they are good presenters but not known and I agree fully on that but you should looking for what makes the best show even in the short term not who generates the most clicks. Because seeking being in the news can lead to doing some stupid things for virality, not all press is good press and Aled or whoever is head of programmes currently should already know that

It’s easy for us to complain about this kind of thing but shippp you correctly mention all the really strong presenters at the moment who have worked their way up. There’s loads of them, so I think the odd personality hire is not the end of the world.

Aled’s thought process on this will be the following:

1) Jamie has a huge social media following which will draw listeners

2) 6 Degrees with Jamie & Spencer was consistently near the top of the under 35 bbc sounds listenership - so clearly (although I don’t get it myself) he really appeals to the target age demographic

3) I understand Newlyweds is super popular and so cross-listenership will be hoped for

I agree Jamie (and that whole show now) is not my cup of tea but it’s appealing well to a demographic and to be honest us radio nerds are well catered for elsewhere on the schedule ie Greg, M&M, Sam & Danni, James, etc

Yep while I can see the point said poster was making I guess the argument is if R1 make celeb hires you're just aping what commerical stations are doing then and it weakens the argument for what makes R1 unique from the commercial sector when future discussions about the BBC and BBC radio come up.

Commercial stations I get more as they have ratings/RAJAR pressure but while there's still that pressure to an extent for Radio 1 should it really be what you're chasing above all else?

In this situation at least the spells Jamie and his wife and GK Barry are limited but it makes you wonder will it stay that way? I think that's the concern more than anything - you don't want the floodgates to open and a future Greg James or Scott Mills to lose out as a result.

But then again Mollie King was probably a bit of a celeb hire and she's now as good as any DJ on Radio 1. But for every Mollie King, there's a Kelly Osbourne on The Sunday Surgery (whoooo) or a Maya Jama, Jameela Jamil.

    • Superfan Steve is a more recent one that’s really stuck with me - especially both Cheryl’s and Anne-Marie’s! Also enjoyed the Don’t Look It Up quiz that started in lockdown with Producer Will and then Producer Amy (now of the breakfast show)
    • Haha ‘forty of those’ is definitely one that’s stuck with me too. ‘Who loves Cher’ is a recent one that I can’t get out of my brain. And the Barryoke songs, especially when they brought it back, God is a Woman will always be God is a Barry to me now.
    • I always say "forty of those" when someone mentions the number. The Ting Tings That's Not My Name feels incomplete without Yo Gabba Gabba. And Mills and Boon always reminds me of Mills and Spoon!
    • Such a great thread! For me, the Innuendo Bingo clips and the stuff they used to play during the Bamboleo gap, are burned into my brain. If someone mentions a right hand, my brain says ‘is very well exercised’. If someone says ‘but’, my brain says ‘he’s gay’.  Such a silly one that’s stuck with me is a remix they did of a clip-up of Charlie Sloth saying ‘Birmingham’ and now I pronounce it the same way and have to sing the song, ‘Birmin-um, do do do do do’. Thanks to the Trapped in the Closet feature, the word ‘spatula’ must always be sung rather than said. And every time I hear Kesha, I wonder who boffed her.
    • For me it's got to be the Girls Aloud prank. Such a genius idea and excecuted so well. I'll always remember the weird calls they got from people thinking they were speaking to actual Girls Aloud members. The Livestock Lounge also comes to mind for being absolutely insane and memorable. Randy Mandy is also a personal favourite moment too. My favourite ‘era’ has to be the Chappers and Laura/Beccy drivetime era so anything from there will just live with me forever.
    • The 'Muff Liquor Company' call they did on their Funny Business feature is one that springs to mind.. or the Superfan Steve they did with Cheryl.
    • I’m trying to work out which bits of Scott’s show have permanently lodged themselves in my brain. For me, the name Mandy will never, ever be normal again thanks to Randy Mandy from Flirt Divert. And whenever I hear any of Madonna’s more recent stuff, my head instantly adds the daft extra brass Scott used to stick over the top. What about you? If you’ve been listening over the last three decades, which moments still pop into your head? The chaotic ones, the running jokes, the unhinged callers, the stuff that still makes you laugh out loud?
    • Zayn Malik takes over Radio1 this Wednesday from 8pm - 10pm instead of Future Pop
    • 14th December Lauren Redfern in for Nat O'Leary with Vicky.
    • The bosses must've liked Spoony on drive, he's sitting in again Wednesday 17th to Friday 19th December. He's been a decent listen this week. It's a shame OJ doesn't appear on daytime as much now. I hope he hasn't been permanently sidelined as Sara's cover.
    • W/C 15th December Jerry doing Going Home all week with Katie. Most likely confirms my theory that Jamie's last show of the year is on the 25th November. (Unless he is involved in any Christmas pre-records) Maia Beth doing Future Pop on the 17th December. Dean in for Greg on the 19th December, the Anthems show at 10am is a giveaway.
    • Spoony is in for Sara on Monday and Tuesday next week as well, with Mark Goodier on The Good Groove. Shaun Keaveny in for Liza Tarbuck on Saturday 22nd November, with Paddy O'Connell sitting in on the 29th. Gary Davies in for Vernon Kay on Monday 1st, Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd December. Spoony in for Trevor Nelson on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th December.. with Melvin Odoom on The Good Groove.
    • For more chaos I nominate Chris Moyles
    • For the total chaos I nominate Greg James for the next DG!
    • When do we find out who the new DJs are for Crimbo Limbo Week? WHOOOOOO?
