And vick just said Jamie’s not got a contract yet so don’t know how that works

Now can you do a show without a contract in don’t know how these things work

Does feel odd not having a contract as of yet and was announced as a permanent presenter. Is Jamie Laing on trial and they making it possible if he doesn’t work out he wouldn’t be on the contracted pay roll.

It's possible to start a new role then sort the contract later. I have done that before. Plus he has an existing relationship with the station.

I mean for being booked on as a cover presenter or presenting for as someone that is filling a specific time slot before a permanent decision is made like Danny Beard and Martha.

First half hour wasn't exactly a riveting listen - Jamie playing messages from celebrity friends wishing him luck..

which I think making it about himself and what the listeners have criticised his position as a co-host of the new drive show that could give that impression of him being out of touch and cringingly name dropping plus the fact he didn’t know the start time and the size of audience even if it. Was said in jest doesn’t help him on the show.

"I only have famous friends" - if he is trying to prove "he isn't just a posh idiot" this is probably not a wise start.

First thoughts: playing into Jamie too much, as above, the famous friends bit wasn’t great. The messages should’ve been to all 3 of them

Yes it’s Katie’s first time with having her name above the drive time door so yes. Also with access all apps it’s sounds like he never heard of the feature. Think if like joined the station which many people who want to get into the radio industry and make it national its a station that they wish to aspire to.

Jamie says he isn't just a 'posh idiot' but that's literally the persona he plays to on this programme.

Amazed by how little he knows about Going Home, he seems surprised by the dinner feature.

I think could least be aware to what he has signed up for and have a clue what is going on

I'm sorry - it is virtually unlistenable. I had hoped for better when it was announced Katie was going to be a part of it.

It is incredibly Jamie dominated.  He just keeps talking randomly.

I don't think it helps that it is basically the same show as before so the Jordan shaped hole is obvious.

Yep listened to the first hour or so and it did feel very Jamie focused and quite 'London Bubble'.

Radio 1 is often at its best when it focused on the listener and has listeners at its heart whereas much of the show was about Jamie's celeb mates and then talk about the Brits and then going through Jamie's phone in Access All Apps. I get the Brits one to an extent since Radio 1 always go big on the Brits but you have to hope it's just a first day thing and not the norm.

You'd have been forgiven for not realising it was Katie's first permanent show too.

And while you have Jamie saying he's been constantly grinding for this slot and has earnt it certainly hasn't come across on air.

Instead from his opening show alone he's admitted to initially not knowing when Going Home started and then some of its main features like 'Access All Apps' and 'What Are You Having For Your Tea' being a mystery to him. You'd have hoped he'd be eager to impress and all over it ahead of his first show on Drive.

Hopefully he is genuine in wanting to grind and quite soon we start to hear an improvement. But with that sort of thing 'Show don't tell' comes to mind. For example with Mollie King she clearly put in the time and effort and treated as a proper career and it came through on air. Whereas the less said about say Maya Jama the better.

Yeah I agree. I wasn’t expecting the Tea roll call to remain.

Could they have also changed Something Songs into something else? As like you say, it just feels like it’s a poorer product of the show with Jordan

I think Mollie King started of good with an initial five week stint as it almost seemed that hadn’t Mollie King been someone that could work well permanently it would’ve continued to have the Matt Edmonson & friends feel and pairing with different names as he did with Scarlette Moffat and Example. She quickly worked well as she had the impression she was learning on the job and wasn’t slacking or phoning it in. Where as with Jamie Laing he seems to be doing the equivalent of track suit and sliders to a business board meeting. Mollie has shown as someone who had listened to the station long before she joined and researched and always well prepared when Jamie didn’t seem to do his homework.

I think where as for when Nick Grimshaw took over from Greg James and then Vick and Jordan from Grimmy they had a longer period of time between their last show on their previous slot to their new drive time show, more likely fresh production and time to do some not to broadcast pilots and brainstorm new ideas. It’s all come out fast and messy and seems like they didn’t give themselves time to produce a new drivetime show or didn’t use time wisely.

If Jamie Laing doesnt work out and doesn’t sign a contract atleast a Vick & Katie show would work without having to focus on yet again re-shuffling programming on the station, yet again.

Maybe an unpopular opinion from me on this one - I didn't mind it. I quite like Jamie, I laughed out loud every time I listened to him when he was on with Matt, and the show today was quite entertaining. I'm not overly upset that he's posh or not really clued up on the opportunity he has been given - it's a job he's getting paid for, and someone decided to hire him, so that's not really his fault. He's not stuck up and he's able to laugh at himself, so he could do well if he knuckles down and at least tries to learn from the environment he is in.

My problem is that it was a bit crowded.  I love Katie so much, and she always has such lovely and funny stories to tell, I feel she was cut short in a lot of today's show. Which leads me to my second unpopular opinion - without Jordan there, I would have just preferred it to be Katie and Jamie.  I'm not the biggest fan of Vick. I have tried, but I find her too giggly and not always forthcoming with anything other than innuendo.  Personally, I can see why they brought Katie in last minute to save the dynamic, but as a trio I think there is too much going on.

Will have to see how it develops I suppose, but Vick on air admitted how the show has always had such a mixture of presenters because of everyone taking holidays, so it does make me wonder how often the 3 of them will be together anyway.

Oh I suppose I want to add to what I just said about not minding Jamie and being okay with him getting the drive slot - I would feel completely differently if it had been Katie joining Vick, with Jamie as the last minute third host.  If that had happened then I would feel annoyed at an unnecesary celebrity hire had been brought in - I hated the Maya Jama - Scott -Chris Friday situation when that was going on. I do think Jamie is better than Maya was though, in many ways.

    • Is this a stupid question lol?
    • Mylo & Rosie in for Dean McCullough on Monday 15th December
    • I’ve voted for Greg, I think his show has sounded outstanding this year, particularly the last few months with R1 Traitors, Rogue Promises and Callum’s bedtime story to name a few.    Matt and Mollie’s show also sounds excellent and absolutely flies by so I will put them in close second.    In terms of the weekend, both Sam and Danni and James have reallly settled into their slots and they sound like they could have those shows for years and years if they wanted them (I wouldn’t be surprised if they all end up on weekdays at some point however)
    • What’s been your favourite show on Radio 1 this year?
    • It's a shame because there's so much great radio about at the moment, I can't listen to it all!
    • 2nd January Update Conor Knight in for Sam with Danni
    • I’d say it is a bit of a surprise that it’s Emma. She’s had to miss two different occasions of covering Sara with someone else stepping in at the last minute. She also hasn’t been used on weekend in a little while so I wasn’t sure about her.
    • Maybe... she's dipped in and out of Radio 2 both as cover and with permanent slots so you never know, she might pop up again one day... No surprise that Emma has got the gig. She's been a regular cover presenter over the past few years (mostly on Saturdays for Dermot and Claudia/Romesh, and more recently for Sara Cox on drive).
    • Think once her contract runs out she will be gone completely
    • Zoe's leaving her Saturday afternoon show already after taking over the 1-3pm slot in May. Emma Willis joins Radio 2 on a permanent basis to replace her.  Zoe's last show is next Saturday and she will continue to host music specials across the year for R2 and Sounds.

    • I used to love ‘At Home with Vick and Jordan’. It was nice to hear the best bits of the show like the Scott Mills daily along with them chatting about stuff after but I stopped listening after Jordan left. I guess the stopped it after Vick went on Maternity leave.
    • “I think we’ve all got to that point now of December where everyone’s a little bit delirious.” “You’ve made it to Friday.” “It doesn’t get any better than this.” Scott Mills powered into Friday in full festive mode, acknowledging the collective December delirium and the after-effects of office Christmas parties across the country. He encouraged listeners to check in if they were feeling “a bit tired and a bit emotional”. Scott revealed it was Tina’s last day before her Christmas break, prompting admiration for her “careful planning” and school-holiday-level organisation. Tina admitted she’d already sorted Secret Santa, wrapped it herself, and even delivered teachers’ presents, earning Scott’s verdict of “Class Rep behaviour.” Ellie Brennan joined in with travel updates but also became part of the banter, from festive exhaustion to missed jokes and the now-legendary spider story. Tina’s tale of returning home from reading The Grinch at Westminster Abbey only to be confronted by a huge wolf spider — trapped under a Sports Direct mug — became one of the morning’s standout moments. “Act calm,” she recalled telling herself, while internally panicking, a very relatable parenting moment that had Scott completely gripped. Big Guest Friday: Kylie Minogue Kylie Minogue arrived on the Scott Mills Breakfast Show like festive royalty, immediately lifting the energy in the studio. Scott could barely contain his excitement as he welcomed her, making it very clear that this wasn’t just a guest slot — Kylie was staying. “You are Kylie Minogue,” Scott said, as he revealed she’d be sticking around to co-host The Wonder Years with him, prompting genuine delight from both sides. Kylie slotted effortlessly into the rhythm of the show, laughing, teasing Scott, and clearly enjoying the chaos of a Radio 2 Friday morning Conversation turned to her reissued album Kylie Christmas: Fully Wrapped, marking ten years since the original release. Kylie admitted that Christmas songs are the hardest for her to remember the words to, joking that they only come out “once a year and then disappear again.” She laughed about tracks like Santa Baby and Winter Wonderland, confessing that even the waitresses probably don’t know all the lyrics either. Scott loved this revelation, especially coming from someone whose back catalogue is otherwise etched into pop history Kylie also talked about XMAS, the festive single that’s been more than a decade in the making. She revealed the song had lived in emails and voice notes since 2015, including one memorable subject line made up of emojis spelling out X-M-A — with a dancing lady standing in for the S. She explained that the hand-movement choreography grew out of messing around years ago and only recently became a fully realised track. Scott, clearly thrilled, encouraged listeners to help push it towards Christmas number one territory The chat became even more personal when Scott mentioned Margot Robbie, revealing that Kylie had once casually suggested Margot should play her in a film. Kylie laughed this off modestly, saying, “Who wouldn’t want Margot Robbie to play them?” while Scott jokingly treated it like a legally binding promise. Texts flooded in from listeners around the world, including fans in Melbourne enjoying summer heat, fish and chips, and a “cheeky Kylie rosé,” much to Kylie’s amusement Kylie’s presence carried through to the end of the show as she joined Scott for a Christmas-themed Wonder Years and later the handover with Vernon Kay. Vernon praised the buzz in the building, while Kylie charmed him instantly, thanking everyone and soaking up the festive atmosphere. Scott’s joy was unmistakable as he signed off alongside her — a genuine fan moment turned unforgettable radio. As Vernon took over, Scott simply said, “I love you,” to Kylie, perfectly summing up the mood Sir Michael Palin Sir Michael Palin joined Big Guest Friday bringing warmth, wisdom and an extraordinary catalogue of stories. Scott introduced him with clear reverence, describing him as a “legendary comedian, writer and broadcaster,” and Michael immediately matched the tone with gentle humour. He spoke about his latest book, Michael Palin in Venezuela, confirming it marked his 100th country visited — a milestone that even Scott sounded slightly awed by Michael explained that these days he’s drawn to destinations that aren’t obvious travel-show choices. He spoke about visiting places like Venezuela, Iraq and North Korea, emphasising that while headlines often focus on conflict, everyday life continues underneath it all. “People still have to live their lives,” he said, explaining how those human stories are what interest him most. Scott listened intently, clearly fascinated by the calm conviction Michael brings to these experiences One of the most gripping moments came when Michael recalled an incident in Venezuela where he and his crew were detained by military intelligence for hours. Armed officers searched their equipment before eventually Googling his name on YouTube. Unfortunately, the first result was not Monty Python, but a heated debate about Life of Brian. “It is not very funny,” the officer reportedly said. The mood shifted dramatically when they finally found Monty Python clips, including the fish-slapping dance, which dissolved the tension and ultimately secured their release Michael also reflected on a powerful moment behind a Venezuelan waterfall, where he carefully navigated slippery rocks with no safety rails. At 81 years old, he described the experience as exhilarating, shouting, “I’m 81 — I should be in bed!” once he made it through. Scott and Kylie were captivated, and Michael admitted a celebratory gin and tonic followed, rounding off what he described as one of the greatest moments of his travels The conversation drifted into Monty Python history, including BBC parties of the past and the support of Sir David Attenborough, who once told the Pythons their late-night scheduling would help them become a cult. Michael’s stories were met with admiration and laughter, with Scott openly hoping he might one day agree to appear on Taskmaster. Michael remained coy but amused, leaving the door tantalisingly ajar Greg Davies Greg Davies entered the studio with his trademark mix of confidence and self-deprecation, immediately joking about Scott using his full name — “Scott Mills” — in the same way Michael McIntyre famously does with him. The timing couldn’t have been better, as Greg was on the morning of a major ticket release for his extended Full Fat Legend tour. Scott hyped it enthusiastically, particularly the looming O2 date, which Greg admitted was “terrifying” Height was briefly — and gently — addressed, with Scott noting the contrast between Greg and Kylie. Greg handled it with warmth and humour, joking that seated interviews were very much preferable and that standing conversations could become awkward quickly. The camaraderie between the three guests felt natural, with Greg praising the hug he shared with Kylie as “just right” One of the biggest laughs came when Scott revealed the existence of intense Greg Davies fan communities online. To Greg’s horror, Sir Michael Palin was enlisted to read out a glowing fan comment describing Greg as having “aged like a fine wine” since growing a beard and getting glasses. Greg took it in good spirits, joking that he’d simply hidden his face better. Kylie later added her own interpretation, suggesting the compliment might mean his face had “collapsed nicely” Talk turned to Taskmaster, with Scott celebrating the recent 20th series finale and openly campaigning for Michael Palin to appear on the show. Greg explained the New Year specials, including episodes featuring non-comedians, and dropped names like Sam Ryder, Jill Scott and Rose Ayling-Ellis. He teased Michael gently, reminding him that guests have to turn the show down three times before Greg stops asking — to which Michael admitted he was only on his first refusal Greg’s favourite song of all time was then revealed: Call Me Maybe. Scott played it in full, delighted by the choice, while Greg confessed it’s part of his nightly routine. “I floss, I blow my nose, I listen to that song, and I go to bed,” he said, before adding it’s also the first thing he plays in the morning. It was a perfectly unexpected insight that had Scott, Kylie and listeners laughing — a fitting end to Greg’s joyful Big Guest Friday appearance Listeners, the Good Morning Minute and Birthday Magic The Good Morning Minute was packed with classic Scott Mills energy, as listeners from across the UK checked in with one-sentence summaries of their Fridays. From hungover hotel birthdays to retirement days, nativity excitement and grocery deliveries in Christmas jumpers, the segment captured the full spectrum of festive Britain. One listener, Emily, revealed she’d started planking during the Good Morning Minute, prompting Scott to gleefully declare himself “basically Les Mills.” Later, Scott orchestrated a birthday moment for Jase, who had woken up alone in a hotel on his birthday after a work party. The solution? Christina Aguilera “singing” Happy Birthday on Radio 2, leaving Jase delighted and Scott triumphant. The Easiest Quiz and the Zero Percent Club The final edition of the week’s Easiest Quiz delivered exactly what fans love: panic, arguing with the quiz, and Scott taking immense joy in contestants fighting their corner. Police dog handler Georgie played brilliantly, supported by tales of Basil the German Shepherd and Bobby the spaniel, but ultimately landed on 11 points after several dramatic near-misses. Scott announced a festive twist for next week: the return of contestants who scored zero points, now proudly dubbed “The Zero Percent Club.” Even Russell T Davies was namechecked as backing the idea.
