There was a bit of a discussion on the chat about this a few days back so thought it deserved a thread of its own.

Have to say come next week I'd say actually I prefer the 'weekend' (Friday-Sunday) line-up to weekdays. Katie and Matt & Mollie are more than weekday worthy and both shows are very listenable and add in Breakfast where you either have the main man in Greg James on Fridays or future stars Sam & Danni on Saturdays and Sundays and you know you'll have good quality shows throughout.

The Friday line-up in general is pretty ideal from my side - Greg followed by Katie (with both having an Anthems half-hour each) then Matt & Mollie, Party Anthems, Jack Saunders and then Danny Howard and the rest of the dance team. All great stuff from my side with most of Radio 1's best.

The music played too seems to subtly change too from Monday-Thursday. Monday-Thursday Radio 1 are very wedded to the playlist and you can hear songs quite a lot and at the best of times I can find the Radio 1 playlist marmite.

Whereas it feels on Friday that even on the normal shows there's more bangers played and you'll also hear a few Radio 1 favourite tracks from the 'recent past' tossed in . Using last Friday as an example you had the likes of Foals's 'The Runner', HAIM's 'Want You Back' and Post Malone's 'Circles' all played in one show and on another MK's 17 and Doja Cat 'Say So'  - all still a great fit for Radio 1 and fairly recent but normally you'd be lucky to hear one or at most two of those during a show Monday to Thursday. Even Capital seem to be willing to throw in more 'recent past' tracks these days during Monday-Thursday then Radio 1 are.

Other than maybe heading off to Mistajam during the Chart there's little reason for me to switch from Radio 1 on Fridays.

Party Anthems is an absolute gem in the schedule too. No show is ever going to be 100% music I like but I normally find myself wondering why more tracks from it aren't on the Radio 1 playlist proper.

They do play more dance tunes on Fridays - Breakfast plays some blocks from Workout Anthems and one of them is On My Mind, 17 and More Than Friends. Dean and Vicky also play a Workout block on Tuesdays at 2pm.

Agree on Party Anthems. It has some new released dance music before those tracks go to the Radio 1 playlist, and its has different mixes every week, unlike the regular Anthems which is repetitive for years.

Matt and Mollie’s show has greater diversity too - they have some tracks from Future Pop and I do hope they play more.

But I reckon those “recent past” tunes are still often heard on Mon to Thur shows.

I agree with weekends being stronger than weekdays lately, for sure.  I don't have hugely strong opinions music-wise, in fact the dancey-ness of the weekends (starting with Friday) is what tends to put me off more than anything. Followed by any throw backs to the kind of Kaiser Chiefs era. But I can make my peace with that if the presenter is a good listen.

It's the presenters I find that are the strongest on the weekends at the moment. I'm not up early enough for early breakfast these days, so I can't comment there - but Greg on breakfast, followed by Katie, followed by Matt & Mollie on a Friday is seamlessly great listening. It's let down by the chart in my opinon, because Jack is just too intense and serious for my liking. I understand the job he's trying to do, but everyone's 'locked in' and his chart voice is almost a parody of presenters gone by (when the chart was the most exciting and meaningful event of the week)...

Saturday I am really growing to love Sam and Danni - although same as past conversations, I wish their show had more structure, and/or features. Katie again, brilliant listen. Followed by Matt & Mollie. Great day of listening.

It falls down a bit on Sundays for me because although I don't listen all day every day, I'm more of a morning to afternoon listener, and I don't enjoy Nat's show at all, no matter how many times I have tried.

Compared to weekdays, the weekend presenter line-up is so much better. RMC, Dean and Vicky, Vick and Jamie, are just not at the level to be carrying this station at the moment. So it will be very interesting to see what changes are on the way given the new rumours that Matt & Mollie are headed for weekdays

Big shout out to you for saying this 20 hours ago - looks like the bosses agree

Seems like they really agreed given Katie's move to Going Home!

Didn't realise the power I hold. I'll just need to have a word with them on the playlist choices now.

Well part of this thread is rendered irrelevant then given the moves announced these past 24 hours. ?

I can't see Nat & Vicky necessarily matching the quality of Katie's show but the Anthems/00s/10s show if it's being extended across the weekend should at least hide any weaknesses to an extent.

I guess it depends on who is in the weekend afternoon slot. If as we as suspect it's James Cusack then it's still a fairly strong line-up.

And at least the reason is weekdays being strengthened. You can understand to an extent weekends being used as more of a training ground.

Danny Beard doing the interim period between Katie's final weekend show and Nat & Vicky starting is certainly a choice - but I guess it's only for a limited period so if Danny is great it's another new DJ to add to the pile and if they're poor then at least it's only for a brief period.

Greg, Nat and Vicky, James Cusack then Jack Saunders and Danny Howard is a strong Friday line up

    • Thanks for posting these! I've been looking for any clips/full shows from the late 90's and through the 00's and early 2010's. I found one a while back on Mixcloud from August 2000 with Clive Warren on weekend early breakfast into Mark Goodier on Saturday breakfast (which i believe was his last 'regular' show outside of chart and was replaced not long after leaving him with just the chart for his final 2 years)
    • A few more new uploads from recent days: Zane Lowe sitting in for Moyles and revealing the No. 1 for the BBC's Sound of 2012 Greg James's first show of 2013 Three more recordings of antique Moyles, first from the 8th and 11th Jan 2000, and the other I've only yesterday managed to figure out was from the 23rd March 2000, with Chris & Co. live from the TopShop in Leeds where he started his career. Two shows with six years between them, Dev's first early breakfast of 2012, and the first Moyles breakfast show of 2006. And likewise, two shows from Chris and Dev with nine years between them (the 2002 recording also has a full edition of Newsbeat and some Dave Pearce too)

    • I think James should cover Greg, it's weird it takes a duo to cover Greg
    • I really struggled with the NYE show this time around. I’ve listened for the past 5 years and this was by far the one I enjoyed the least. Too much newer music and not enough classics round midnight. Really hope they can get Charlie Hedges back on it next year as she’s so good.    As for the rest of Radio 1 in 2025 - I haven’t always been able to listen as much as I’d like. Our work radio is set to what was once the local radio station but is now a national Scottish streamed station (which in comparison to Radio 1 - is awful). I’m mainly listening to Greg before 8 and then Going Home after 4. Greg is still as good as ever and a really steady set of hands. Going Home just needs some stability. Katie is the one least likely to leave and I find that interesting as she wasn’t originally part of the Going Home show when Jamie was drafted in. I can’t see Vick being back somehow - think she wants more presenting (which I think she’s really good at) and Jamie - the constant days off… it feels like the colleague who’s always pulling a sickie. i used to really enjoy the 00s/Noughties show but I think it’s been done dirty and needs a fresh set of eyes on it. Nat and Vicky just focus on playing music that is still relatable to now and it’s split between anthems and Nat and Vicky. I used to really like listening to it as they’d often play songs I’d forgotten. But recently it’s the same old, same old. I think the Noughties show needs an approach of someone a little more specialist (like Fearne does with Sounds of the 90s) that can really bring it on. A good example could be - Geese are getting all the plaudits right now - but their music reminds me on the Doves around 2002, which was very hyped at the time (and played to death by Radio 1).

    • Michelle Visage is presenting the Saturday lunchtime show (1-3pm) this week. There's no sign of Emma Willis in the schedule yet and it's still under Zoe Ball's name.
    • Franky Wah sits in for Pete Tong on Friday 9th Jan Ahadadream sits in for Pete Tong on Friday 16th Jan
    • Superb! I'll enjoy having a gander through those. Here's something for you to look through if you haven't seen already in return. Lots of Radio 1 and Moyles stuff in here early 2000's and some breakfast, it was all uploaded during the pandemic by someone I kinda know. You may have seen some on mixcloud too. https://archive.org/details/chasefm If you want a more specific breakdown of the Moyles ones in there, I put them in a thread on chrismoyles.net https://chrismoyles.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=28030
    • I've compiled all seventeen of my tapes here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Em5QUpE7_ESnKThQmTij1OF1LbdpOmk_?usp=drive_link There's also a document with some of my attempts to breakdown the recordings on each tape.
    • I think one of the October 98 ones is Moyles' second ever afternoon show, caught by chance by Adam I believe. You'll have to let me know if you have any of the missing bits from anything incomplete, if you get the raw MP3 over of it I can bind them together in audition to complete it.   Really looking forward to hearing the early 00's Moyles stuff, right up my era for my time listening to Radio 1. I'll listen to that one later tonight on my walk.
    • Some more bits and pieces: Sara Cox, with her first show of 2010: Scott sitting in for Fearne & Reggie on the first chart of 2009: And the first of the digitised tape recordings, Chris Moyles from (I believe) the 5th January 2000. Regarding those Google Drive files, there's some great stuff in there! I think I have some bits from at least one of those partial Moyles shows in there, so will need to take a listen...
    • That's rare to see a full day from Radio 1 like that. The Scott Mills one is my recording from the day. I put up my archive a few years ago to mixcloud of all the shows I recorded of him between 2005 and 2007. Before you had to start paying. I think this should be viewable, but I digitised a tape collection a couple of so years ago. Not my recordings, someone else's. All Radio 1 from 1997 to about 2000. Chris Moyles, Zoe Ball and Kevin Greening, Mark and Lard. Plus a few other bits. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ul5dq3vQlIOkzsVc5UK4Y05FSXIm_TXV
    • Who would everyones ideal cover presenter be for each show?
    • First few of these now available: Tom Deacon sitting in for Sara Cox on New Years Day 2012. Despite being a regular listener at the time I have zero recollection of him. One I'm sure will go down well round these parts, three and a half hours with Scott (and Chappers) in for Moyles on his first show of the new year, 2nd January 2008. Radio 1's Top 40 chart of 2007, with Fearne (no Reggie, surprise surprise). This has been made available before via the chart community, but the first half hour is in better quality. From December 2012, Reggie Yates's final show at Radio 1, with that years Xmas Top 40. Again, technically already available elsewhere, but this copy includes Reggie's final goodbye link, which is missing from other versions. And if anyone can cope with even more Xmas music post-December, two shows from Christmas Day 2007, Greg's first ever annual Xmas morning show, and a special one-off with Kylie Minogue.   On a final note, I uploaded these last year (with the exception of Scott) as a bit of a test run. A full day in the company of Radio 1 from Moyles through to Colin Murray. https://www.mixcloud.com/Brigham27/playlists/r1-28062007/
