final thoughts of big weekend 2007

Recommended Posts

Hey its not over yet. You've got a week of saying how wonderful it was now. They endless replays etc etc.

I think it was amazin, it was a really good weekend. Scott was talking about The Gossip and Beth Ditto, she was great. You should of seen her, a proper mess with the hair and make-up. Dizzie Rascal was okay too, Sterophonics put on a excellent show.

Kasabian rocked. I saw Mika do a little cover - it was for Sara Cox's show and it went really well. Pete Tong and Vernon Kaye - they played some cracking tunes.

Beth Ditto made my night last night. Those boobs, like Annie Mac said, have a mind of their own.

Many highlights of mine were Calvin Harris, The Klaxons, The Fratellis, Mika, and weirdly, Dizzee Rascal. Ive missed loads of bands lke kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight and most of the Gossips set, i only caught the last bit.

Some artists i wasnt impressed with were Rihanna and Natasha Bedingfield. Its not that they were awful, i just cant seem to enjoy watching these type of artists at festivals.

Seeing the View was a wonderful experience. of course! - to get a good place to see them I stood through Riannah (very talented but not my style at all) and Mika. who was actually very good and very entertaining and though I probably wouldn't have chosen to go and see him. I'm glad I did.

Dignity was in as short supply as ever at festivals with the usual unpleasant toilets, mud everywhere and beer being thrown over heads :D

Someone had scratched "f**k you with your styled hair scene kids" inside one of the toilets and there certainly wre a lot of people who liked fashion, even to the extent of wearing Converse or flat pumps in all that mud. There were some very young children (aww and Coxy brought Lola onto the main stage btw) and some older people. one or two looked older then me!

Being able to see the View live for the fist time was my top music highlight but equally exciting in a different way, I saw the actual Scott Mills live and in person, too!!

Get cape.wear cape.fly was excellent and so were Maximo Park . Kaiser Chiefs set went down very well with the mostly very drunk crowd. I was in the Gossip set yesterday, so 2 other people off here were in the same room with me - I might even have been standing next to one of them without knowing, how odd is that?

Oh and I did see Razorlight and I think they're a bit self indulgent and rather overrated, but that's just my opinion, of course.

UM is a nice place

You saw Scott? You lucky girl! :D

I've been watching the highlights and, I have to say, the Stereophonics were amazing. I've never really been that much of a fan to be honest but, wow! That's a band that know how to play live! The Kaisers were brilliant too, as was Calvin Harris and The Fratellis. Downsides? Natasha Bedingfield sounded great, but she didn't really fit in with the rest of the acts, same goes for Rihanna.

Looking forward to the highlights of the highlights of the highlights though.

at least a week, god they must be embarrassed about the one in dundee becuase this was so much bigger and better etc...

moyles is ok this morning, but i am finding myself flicking between galaxy and him becuase he is playing a load of live performances from it and i turn those off. it's great that it's been a big success, but i haven't listened all weekend to be honest. i never intended too, but me not being very well, working, my new car and the fa cup final got in the way. my computer however did record judge jules as it always does on a saturday. the first hour and a half he sounded like he was playing dance music, but after half 8 it went hippie/woodstock, and i think he was still presenting. i think i caught razorlight or somthing when i skimmed through yesterday.

on the grid.

The event as a whole I thought was brilliant, and I'm quite chuffed to say I'm a Radio 1 fan, as I know through TV, online, and the radio - more people will be listening and watching. And I'm chuffed to say I had tickets, even though I couldn't make it.

The one disappointment for me was all this backstage stuff. I was disappointed rather than live music we still had Gym Class Heroes and Hellogoodbye. I felt after 12pm they could have played the highlights out along with some of the backstage stuff to fill. I can't really understand why the red button service and TV was more worth watching than the actual service that put the event on!

But Radio 1 was still worth a listen, but I can't help that every live event it's missing out. The coverage could have been better. And it's the same with Live8 - they kept playing the same playlist pap until another live track came along.

As for the actual event the line-up I can't fault either, around fifty of the biggest acts around, and it wasn't your Top of the Pops miming either - every live track bar one or two artists sounded amazing.

A success, and I look forward to next year... may be I can go then!

It was the first time I've heard Stereophonics and fell in love with them! I thought it was Razorlight until they said who it was. Good stuff man.

I heard all of the dance party and loved that. Simian Mobile Disco woohoo!

Stereophonics are really good in concert. Not girly thread, so will keep it brief, but Kelly is one truly attractive young man! Good taste too, he has the same sunglasses as me.;)

Really enjoyed Just Jack, esp when Jack (s'pose that's his name) told everyone to stop taking mob phone pics and just jump about and enjoy themselves, looked fun.

Have only heard Superstylin' from Groove Armada (amazing - one of my faves), will have to find the rest of their set somewhere.

Loved all the brass in Mark Ronson. Shook my tail feather round the living room!

Kasabian and Bloc Party- really good!

Didn't hear nearly as much as I'd have liked, but enjoyed everthing I did experience.:D

    • Radio 1 generation meaning??  Today's 10-30 yr-olds? I doubt it. They'll still know Pete Tong though, because he is rhyming slang!
    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock. 6th May schedule has updated to show that the Radio 1 Big Weekend Shows will now be the following: 6am-10am 10am-2pm 2pm-6pm 6pm-8pm Still no presenters listed.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
