Has anyone got any modern insight on how the BBC archive is looking right now? Especially when it comes to Radio, mainly Radio 1?

Around 5 or so years ago I did some short term work for the BBC. And had access to BBC Redux, which at the time was the BBC's internal archive go-to. I searched for Radio 1 stuff but could only get anything from July 2007 to the current day.

Redux mainly automatically captured and uploaded the freeview output from July 07 onwards. There was archive content in there, but mainly TV stuff. Which bizarrely included lots of circa 2000 VHS rips of BBC breakfast with Jeremy Bowen with his epic mustache of the time.

Redux has now since been integrated with other elements of BBC archive. I no longer have access to any of it at all. So if anyone knows, what's in there these days? Is there any classic Scott Mills early breakfast gold locked away, Chris Moyles, Mark and Lard... Chappers and Dave? Would be interesting to know.

I mean the final Mills days at Radio 1 was very reliant on our content up until the more recent years. So I'm not sure they're any further forward with really old content. There's still the odd show kicking about from Mark and Lard, Mark Goodier, Backstage, and Sunday Surgery (whooooo?!)

Yeah I can't imagine they kept every single show. When Radio 1 reached 50 a few years ago I know from a few people, that old producers were contacted to see what material they had. If any. I think live shows, special guests etc were probably kept.

I remember something in 2006 called 'BBC Infax', which was public. You couldn't download anything, but it was a small window into what they had sitting about. It was only around for 12 months or so and nothing has really replaced it as such.

It's also a sad reality that given the volume of output - what do you keep?

Even on our favourite shows, how much of the output is real gold.  There's the odd very funny moment on Vick and Jordan or Greg's show but on the average Radio 1 day how much of most of the output ever needs heard again?  (Ditto for all other stations)

Probably a question of producers making an effort to snip the stand out moments as they go along.

Since around June 2007, every Radio 1/2/3/4/5 etc show has been kept. A project called Redux started that year and it basically captured the free view output of TV and radio from the BBC. Before that it's probably scattered here and there. Shows from big news events, big guests, live shows etc were kept from what I can gather.

Not sure if this is the right spot for it, but starting in the new year I'm hoping to start uploading and sharing my own collection of old Radio 1 shows, mainly covering the years 2007-2012, but with some extra stuff from 2005/06 and 2013-15.

From looking around online there's some shows I have editions of (such as the Sunday Surgery or Switch with Annie & Nick) that have never had any full editions resurface online (compared to the likes of Moyles and Mills).

I've also recently digitised a collection of 15 cassettes, dating from Jan 2000 to Jan 2002 (almost entirely old Moyles afternoon shows) which I'll be uploading as well.

Looking forward to hearing these, especially the Chris Moyles afternoon stuff. I digitised a lot of old tapes which had Moyles early breakfast and afternoon stuff on for someone years ago, it's still sitting about online.

Once you get them on you'll have to link them in for us.

First few of these now available:

Tom Deacon sitting in for Sara Cox on New Years Day 2012. Despite being a regular listener at the time I have zero recollection of him.

One I'm sure will go down well round these parts, three and a half hours with Scott (and Chappers) in for Moyles on his first show of the new year, 2nd January 2008.

Radio 1's Top 40 chart of 2007, with Fearne (no Reggie, surprise surprise). This has been made available before via the chart community, but the first half hour is in better quality.

From December 2012, Reggie Yates's final show at Radio 1, with that years Xmas Top 40. Again, technically already available elsewhere, but this copy includes Reggie's final goodbye link, which is missing from other versions.

And if anyone can cope with even more Xmas music post-December, two shows from Christmas Day 2007, Greg's first ever annual Xmas morning show, and a special one-off with Kylie Minogue.

On a final note, I uploaded these last year (with the exception of Scott) as a bit of a test run. A full day in the company of Radio 1 from Moyles through to Colin Murray.

That's rare to see a full day from Radio 1 like that. The Scott Mills one is my recording from the day. I put up my archive a few years ago to mixcloud of all the shows I recorded of him between 2005 and 2007. Before you had to start paying.

I think this should be viewable, but I digitised a tape collection a couple of so years ago. Not my recordings, someone else's. All Radio 1 from 1997 to about 2000. Chris Moyles, Zoe Ball and Kevin Greening, Mark and Lard. Plus a few other bits.

Some more bits and pieces:

Sara Cox, with her first show of 2010:

Scott sitting in for Fearne & Reggie on the first chart of 2009:

And the first of the digitised tape recordings, Chris Moyles from (I believe) the 5th January 2000.

Regarding those Google Drive files, there's some great stuff in there! I think I have some bits from at least one of those partial Moyles shows in there, so will need to take a listen...

I think one of the October 98 ones is Moyles' second ever afternoon show, caught by chance by Adam I believe. You'll have to let me know if you have any of the missing bits from anything incomplete, if you get the raw MP3 over of it I can bind them together in audition to complete it.

Really looking forward to hearing the early 00's Moyles stuff, right up my era for my time listening to Radio 1. I'll listen to that one later tonight on my walk.

I've compiled all seventeen of my tapes here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Em5QUpE7_ESnKThQmTij1OF1LbdpOmk_?usp=drive_link

There's also a document with some of my attempts to breakdown the recordings on each tape.

Superb! I'll enjoy having a gander through those.

Here's something for you to look through if you haven't seen already in return. Lots of Radio 1 and Moyles stuff in here early 2000's and some breakfast, it was all uploaded during the pandemic by someone I kinda know. You may have seen some on mixcloud too.

If you want a more specific breakdown of the Moyles ones in there, I put them in a thread on chrismoyles.net

A few more new uploads from recent days:

Zane Lowe sitting in for Moyles and revealing the No. 1 for the BBC's Sound of 2012

Greg James's first show of 2013

Three more recordings of antique Moyles, first from the 8th and 11th Jan 2000, and the other I've only yesterday managed to figure out was from the 23rd March 2000, with Chris & Co. live from the TopShop in Leeds where he started his career.

Two shows with six years between them, Dev's first early breakfast of 2012, and the first Moyles breakfast show of 2006.

And likewise, two shows from Chris and Dev with nine years between them (the 2002 recording also has a full edition of Newsbeat and some Dave Pearce too)

Thanks for posting these! I've been looking for any clips/full shows from the late 90's and through the 00's and early 2010's. I found one a while back on Mixcloud from August 2000 with Clive Warren on weekend early breakfast into Mark Goodier on Saturday breakfast (which i believe was his last 'regular' show outside of chart and was replaced not long after leaving him with just the chart for his final 2 years)

Here's one I put up a few years back. This show will be 25 years old this coming Thursday (22nd January 2026). Frightening, it sounds like just a few years ago listening back.

    • Scott opened Thursday by immediately clocking the pace of the inbox, saying it was “one of those mornings where you can tell people have woken up ready to talk.” Ellie Brennan and Tina Daheley were both in studio, with Scott checking in on them and joking that “we haven’t even warmed up yet and you’re all already in full voice.” The early links were light, with Scott narrating what was coming up and reminding listeners they were heading into “a proper Thursday show.” There were quick resets, music breathing space and familiar back-announcing, with Scott repeatedly acknowledging how fast messages were landing and half-laughing that “this is already a lot before seven.” Ellie noted that voice notes were stacking up unusually early, while Tina commented that people seemed keen to respond to each other as much as the programme. Motherhood chat, but not a phone-in The main theme emerged around motherhood and social media expectations, introduced by Scott reading a listener message about feeling like she was “constantly failing compared to what I see online.” Scott paused on it, saying “this comes up a lot, doesn’t it,” but was careful to keep the show moving rather than letting it settle into a single-issue phone-in. Ellie talked about how curated feeds distort reality, while Tina pointed out that “nobody posts the day where everything went wrong.” Scott reframed the discussion several times, reminding listeners that “you’re hearing highlights, not real life,” before deliberately breaking the run with music and a reset, saying they’d “come back to this — but not all at once.” Voice notes, relief and shared laughs As voice notes came in, the tone varied. Some were reflective, others lighter, with Scott reacting in the moment rather than letting each one sit heavily. When one mum admitted she didn’t enjoy every moment, Scott replied simply, “you’re allowed to feel like that,” before immediately moving on to the next message to stop it lingering. Ellie noted quietly that a lot of messages ended with apologies — “sorry if this sounds awful” — which Scott picked up on, saying, “you all keep apologising — you don’t need to.” He then undercut the intensity by joking that “this has turned into group therapy before 7am,” before laughing and playing a record. Listeners responded to each other as much as the show, which Scott acknowledged on air, saying it felt like “people talking to people rather than just talking to us,” while still steering the programme forward. Pause for Thought and breathing space Pause for Thought slotted neatly into the running order, continuing the theme without deepening it. The speaker focused on compassion, comparison and letting go of unrealistic expectations. Scott thanked them afterwards, saying it “fits with what people have been saying this morning,” and deliberately left a short pause before moving on. Ellie observed that the slot felt like “a natural breather” in the show, which Scott agreed with, before resetting the mood with music and lighter links. The handover Scott handed over to Vernon Kay by briefly outlining what the morning had been about. Vernon picked up on the listener response, saying it sounded like “one of those shows where people really got involved.” Scott agreed, replying that “they really did today,” and mentioned the volume of messages still waiting.
