New show from 9th Jan: Radio 1’s Essential Albums seems to be replacing the powerdown playlist for a few weeks. Along the lines of Zane Lowe’s Masterpieces from back in the day I think, but with a wider focus genre wise. Don’t think anyone else has spotted this yet?

Used to love Masterpieces - although it did come from an era before Spotify. It'll be interesting to see how it fits in with a BBC Sounds generation.

Think it kind of worked in the era of where you didn’t have every album at your disposal. I sometimes like the one off specials when say Billie Eilish, Calvin Harris, Biffy or Bruno had new albums out over the years to play their new albums and have bit of chat around it. But seems odd to make a show three times a week with albums over decades old. Think the odd anniversary special and playback as from time to time have been done on specialist slots of the schedule throughout the years at Christmas or Easter work.

But both hope and don’t see it lasting long on the schedule and something they may change-up even early as February. Think thy could eventually announce Future Alternative, BBC Introducing Rock to occupy those slots or if they come up with one or two other shows for those slots.

Looks like different DJs are choosing different albums. It's all on BBC Sounds.

I find its very odd that this essential album programming pre-recorded and sounds first before any episode goes live on radio at 10PM time where still its not in the late hours and where people who still listening to radio at start of night shifts, university students studying and people preparing for the next day. Something that is either live or interactive is needed that used to be before even Jack Saunders launched the first indie slot. Having programming whether it’s music specialism, entertainment or conversational like lifehacks is better suited. I feel that mid-February to March either Power Down Playlist will return to the slot or then by spring there could be new late evening programming announced.

At the very least I'd prefer to see the specialist shows in the 10 pm slot... Are they all still live these days?

If they did move Benji, Annie Nightingale and Dan P Carter to that timeslot would be good atleast to have some live programming. Maybe Dan is live? I don’t think Annie or Benji is and if they did move to that time would like new choices of specialist music programming to air from midnight to 3 am

I’d be tempted if the shows did move ahead an hour to 10 PM I’d rather make subtle tweaks to the stations timings for the late night programming moving Future Soul to Monday’s 10pm-12pm as more gentler start of the week. Maybe even move Future Pop with Maia Beth to Sunday’s 7pm to 9pm. With Rock Show moving to 8pm-10pm on Thursday’s followed by Future Alternative 10pm-11pm rock introducing at 11pm-12am. Would move to have Casskid’s new 1xtra show reflected in repeat on Radio 1 schedule with 1Xtra introducing reflected on early sunday morning

The only live shows in the 11pm slot are the rock show and the D&B show.  Annie, Benji, the Residency and Introducing are all pre-recorded.

Yes but future pop is mollies show so she wouldn’t do 2 shows on a Sunday

I mean I could see it as something that Maia Beth could frankly take up full-time as her show

Apart from removing the jarring absurdity of having the Rock Show straight after the Chilled Show on a Sunday, I don't think anybody at R1 cares about 'fitting' any given programme to it's best time slot.

I mean even though radio 1’s future of programming is thinking of digital first. So in couple of days scheduling for the station becomes quite trivial. But never quite understood not fitting the mood of the schedule for what people want to hear from that timeslots. I really think from when Phil Taggart had the Chillest Show for few hours late at night and now two hours earlier in the night. Investing in developing their Radio 1 Relax brand it seems, as you imply Codger Fan, that it is jarring that more relaxed and chilled programming isn’t timeslotted for a slot typically when listeners wind down.

Just putting it out there though maybe not as nightly to have such special on the whim and cuff content like ‘Radio 1’s Essential Albums’ but to have the odd special serial content of maybe ‘Lifehacks Late’ having different content in one of the weeknights that would have limited series given time slot over space of few weeks in a year. Would have one weeknight day selected for new content think there could be space for bringing back a show like Radio 1’s Review Show

Would think it would be good to maybe for Radio 1 to find something where it can do something around the album and albums out around National Album Day and National Record Store day find a way to embed it in with daytime content

Snoochie Shy on with Greg this morning got me thinking - couldn't we at least have a 1 Xtra takeover and have her on late nights on both stations?

I do find since they changed management at the BBC Radio department Radio 1 Xtra has moved further away from being tied to the brand and image of radio 1 as there is no last minute cover or supply from 1 Xtra as Adele Roberts started out by doing cover from the station, Dotty, Target, MistaJam, Jamz Supernova, Yasmin Evans were names remember covering Annie Mac or Clara Amfo’s show sure Nick Bright did early breakfast show on the station the odd week of cover on radio 1. And it seems odd and seemed to add to the stations diversity and demographic outreach.

When think of shows like Lifehacks they got Richie Braverman or Reece Parkinson who could do odd bit of cover on that slot. Am also surprised that Victoria Jane’s Future Soul show doesn’t play out on 1 xtra. The only shows that go out on both stations these days are Tiffany Calver and Benji B’s show with only other cross over presenter being Jeremiah

Think when comes to content that when comes to the both Radio 1 and 1 Xtra’s more specialist programming and in the future when its seen as a digital first one BBC do think there needs to be greater brand synchronicity especially in the area of presenter hosted specialism. I feel when comes to BBC Radio 1’s Future Sounds for branding purposes I’d drop the 1 and think that needs to replicated ‘BBC Radio Future’ as an umbrella of different shows across the BBC network. I say the ‘takeover’ hence why theres two different verities of programming on Saturday night with Target and Asiamah. Its not the simulcast that is needed but cohesive and collective brand with it being ‘one BBC; enable listeners to have a brand of swap and change with.

Why think when comes to New Music Fix, Casskid, DJ Target that a brand ‘BBC Future Music’ like Radio 1 Dance is for Radio 1 Dances content but to build a brand that connects a networks not a stations similar content.

Can do another post and reframe it if this sounds all very messy

Some sort of music politics. Can't see anything from fans. I think Taylor's lawyers are particularly spicy, so wouldn't be surprised if they've been in touch.

Maybe radio 1 should’ve if it is a legal issue with the record company or the lawyers and the rights of Swifts music is something they should’ve worked out earlier

Yes a bit unfortunate, the Taylor Swift episode was surely going to be one of the bigger draws.

I kind of think since these albums that are still highly streams and highly brought as for vinyl Taylor Swift made 5% of album sales and with that always find whats the point of playing listeners what they could easily be listening to in their non-radio leisure time. I don’t mind it if it’s done on the week of the album release when it’s reflecting the conversation and providing bit of airspace to chat about a timely cultural highlight. Don’t know how much a nine year old high selling album is think works when its more lesser played or more cult classic nostalgia like when 6 Music do their album club. Be interesting to know the data for the listening patterns

    • I’m have no interest in listening to GK Barry so it shall be Sounds or Spotify for me.
    • Agree completely about not having her on a Thursday, but 2 solid weeks would most likely be too much!!
    • Let's hope so, as forcibly taking off one of the best shows on the station one day a week would rival Aled's employment of Danny Beard as his worst decision.
    • Matt was doing this musical thing so could be that?
    • This GK Barry thing is so weird. Surely they’d give her a slot in the summer instead of ripping up the schedule at the start of the year. Casual listeners will think the change is permanent as it’s lined up with the rest of the schedule changing.    Surely doing the two week stint that James is doing on Going Home would be better.
    • Oh I’d forgotten about GK Barry. I do wonder whether Matt & Mollie requested to drop Thursdays or were forced. It’s so random to have a different show on a Thursday afternoon
    • Some notes about the schedules released from the 5th September. James is still down to do Weekend Breakfast, it might be his last weekend. Nat and Vicky are down to do the 4th-5th September but generic listings on the 6th Sep. Callum Leslie in for Lauren on Life Hacks. Looks like there will be an Indie show on both the 6th and 8th September as it moves to it new slot. GK Barry begins her run of shows on the 10th September, it's called The GK Barry Show on Radio 1.
    • Early Hours Schedule Changes  Wednesday 1am/2am Radio1 Dance Presents - Moved from Thursdays 1am/2am Thursday 1am/2am Danny Howard's Club Mix - Moved from Fridays 1am/2am   Friday 1am/2am R1 Workout Anthems - Replacing Danny H Ckub Mix 2am/3am R1 Pop Anthems - Replacing the 2h R1 Anthems Show  3am/4am R1 Pop Anthems - Replacing the 2h R1 Anthems Show    Saturdays 2am/3am Danny Howard's Club Mix - Moved from Saturdays 3am/4am 3am/4am Radio1 Dance Anthems with Charlie Hedges   *No R1 Dance Presents Show on a Saturday Morning
    • R1 Schedule Changes We Knew about before they got removed: 14th - 16th Aug & 21st - 23rd Aug: Mylo & Rosie sit in for Sam & Danni 15th & 16th Aug: Minah sits in for Vicky 15th Aug: DJ Kizzi sits in for Jerry 15th & 22nd Aug: Connor Coates sits in for Charlie Hedges 18th & 25th Aug: Jordan Blyth sits in for Alyx Holcombe
    • Interesting how it still says Group Chat with Nat & Vicky?
    • New weekday schedule starts W/C 7th September. Also as predicted, Mylo & Rosie start at 4am.
    • Agreed. I wasn't expecting the gap to be as long as this, and we've not even got an announcement yet. I know they needed to get breakfast sorted, but we knew who was taking over within 4 weeks of Gary stepping in.
    • In fairness almost all the presenters this summer have done two week stints. It’s bizarre that the interim show itself is continuing this far into the year though.
    • W/C 7th September. Rather unsurprisingly, a new drivetime show isn't being launched this week. Gary Davies is listed still. I wonder if he'll now do a stint on drive until any new show launches.
    • Of course completely understand it's not the most important thing to work on, but that doesn't explain how some updates have been made and then removed, that's even more work than just doing the update and leaving it!
