Christmas Day 2001

Some very old Scott Mills here. Radio 1 on Christmas Day when they played very few Christmas songs, and mostly reflected on the year in music. Features David Dickinson from Bargain Hunt, as well as Coxy and Moyles' Christmas messages. Also lots you'd not get away with saying on Radio 1 today - like suggesting they blow the national grid by turning on appliances before that year's showing of Only Fools and Horses. It's followed by Nemone playing the best of One Big Weekend in Birmingham.

Didn’t know that assuming referring to Nemone who then moved on to 6Music did radio 1 (maybe something back of my memory reading on something but slipped my mind) I like programming that Clara Amfo, Benji B does come December wrapping up a year in music feel when Mollie King has last show of the first run of Future Pop there maybe a wrap up of breakthrough pop acts. Odd to have it featured on Christmas Day but sure remember a time when Fearne Cotton did live lounges special on Christmas Day.

the national grid comment bit of harmless fun.

Maybe getting into early twenties feel like it’s nice to have a respite from all the big crimbo songs that churned out through Christmas period. But given probably how Mariah and Wham managed to get to number one and Ed and Elton in recent years with big Christmas songs and top 40 littered with them maybe they feel best of whacking them all on

Used to love Nemone on early breakfast!

I did get up stupidly early on the morning of her final early breakfast show to record it. Which is above. I'm sure the late Vicky Marsden used to cover that same time slot or near enough, a few years before. And Clive Warren before her.

on the grid.

Also a blast from the past!  Can't believe it was 2005, seems even longer.

    • At a time when Radio 1 has surely lost listeners to Capital at Breaktast you’d be trying to protect the station so people switch back.  Certainly yesterday I didn’t switch back to Radio 1 at all.
    • Was abysmal…Surely Danny can’t be a contender for anything permanent when the new schedules are locked in I.e Matt and Mollies slot
    • Alexandra Burke creating the phrase 'Elephant In The Room' whooooooooo
    • Zane Versus.... Whooooooooo. Do You Do Fridays? WhooOOOooo.
    • The Capital Breakfast show is right up my street so far - such a fun listen. You've both been great on Radio 1 and are sounding excellent again on Capital A few quickfire questions: You've both been part of some great pairings on radio and on podcast - what goes into making a duo or trio work and sound great on air? Also, Chris - were there ever any discussions about you moving over to Radio 2 with Scott or had the Global offer already come first? Also how do you both go about managing that split between your radio 'you' and the private 'you'? You share a lot on air but also there's some understandably some stuff you keep private (famously Jordan doesn't 'talk about those things'). And how do you make sure if you're having a miserable day or are a bit low that it doesn't come across too much on air?
    • What a nightmare link at 11.15am this morning. Spent 30 seconds waffling about the name of The Last Dinner Party as if he’d never heard it before, then started mentioning Capital and the license fee, and how it’s been used to pay for him to be there, and was then cut off by the start of the next song.
    • Have been reading this all week. She's such a brave woman. Just got to the chapter where she explains why she missed Scott's leaving event at Radio 1. She talks about leaving Radio 1 because her mum's health got worse, and wanting to quietly leave radio at 44 just how she first arrived on the airwaves at 18. Worth a read!
    • Frozen Indigo Angel... Whoooooooo?!!
    • Did it take a lot of tempting to go to Capital Jordan? Did you feel like you’d achieved everything you could at Radio 1 (other than breakfast)? Chris, how did your Capital move come about? Did Radio 1 want you to stay after Scott moved on?

    • I never expected to be enjoying a commercial radio Breakfast Show, but this is a good listen and less adverts than I might have expected.
    • It's got more of a Fri/ Sat feeling to it, for me. But there's nothing inherently wrong with the show.
    • Think it's a lot more fun when they don't have guests and have to find ideas to fill a show.  Them doing some calming traffic reports around the most stressful part of the day. I wonder if there's more they could do with that - 8.15am being the most stressful time. Anyway, I think that of most radio shows, I'd rather hear the creativity than an overhyped celebrity. Greg had it right yesterday with Tom Allen, he wasn't really just there to promote The Apprentice, but to do comedy too.
    • Got to admit I only heard a bit of it tonight whilst driving but I loved it! Will definitely be listening back to this one and in future. Just what Thursday nights needed! 💗
    • Right, despite what Jordan may say now, I think he (and probably Chris) would rather be doing R1 breakfast but seems he was told that wasn't at all imminent so made the understandable move to go elsewhere. Doubt Greg will move off breakfast anytime soon as he's got a new contract and anyway no obvious replacement in line... They certainly have thrown some energy behind competing these last couple of weeks though.
