Predictions for 2022 and beyond

To save clogging up the chatbox, I thought it'd be a good idea to set up a thread for a bit of fun, brainstorm some ideas whether that be realistic predictions or wishful thinking. I'll post some of my own thoughts when I get chance.

It can be Radio 1, Radio 2.. any of the other BBC National or local Stations, commercial, community or wider radio industry.

I can't see any massive change at Radio 1 or 1xtra unless anyone walks. Major changes have happened on both stations in recent months so i think things will be relatively quiet.

Radio 2 will mostly stay the same I reckon, apart from Jeremy Vine leaving later in the year, with the replacement broadcasting from Salford. We'll hear more from Vernon Kay and Edith Bowman as regular cover throughout the year, and Scott will continue to regularly cover Ken Bruce's show.

I was going to say Bauer would announce a big change to their Hits Radio schedule, but that has been announced in recent days. I can see them finally rebranding the locally named stations (such as Free Radio) as 'Hits'. I can also see them moving local shows to drive, with Fleur East's Breakfast show going national.

With the big additions of Simon Mayo and Jackie Brambles... It wouldn't surprise me if a big (not necessarily a Celeb name) radio name to took over the breakfast slot.

Radio 1 if anyones likely to leave this year I think it’ll be Matt Edmondson or Annie Nightingale to retire - possibly Pete Tong.  I did think Adele but I reckon she’ll hang on another year as if she’s still having check ups less likely to want to start a new role

I see Pete Tong tho should have some rest sort of show on Radio 2 as feel Fridays could do without being exclusively 80s/90s. He could still somehow have bit more time left as he’s untouchable.

Annie is an exception to any convention about any longevity at Radio 1 her career is lasted decades longer at Radio 1 than any one expected defying the odds think as long as she can speak and mentally able to do the job she could do it for the rest of her living days how long they maybe. She launched an initiative for new female and nonbinary dj talent on radio 1 so that shows he commitment to Continue. I don’t think she’d retire. Neither would Tony Blackburn for that matter.

Matt could see maybe one of the next ones to go next he’s one I could see doing stand in presenting on stations like Radio 2 or virgin Radio maybe he could be type that would do podcasts books develop tv shows as he has done list of stuff I think when leaves inf he could end up devoting time between family but taking on some presenting duties

@NathanS see the possibility of Fleur East’s Breakfast show going national and bit of a rebuff on Bauer’s national outreach. I could see them pushing more money into marketing and promotion of their stations with nation wide advertisements on billboard busses and television wonder if like Global and BBC will try to develop an app or marketing strategy that links its radio names and brands more closely feel the Global app has helped people to tune in to other stations they might not and developed sister stations like LBC News and Capital and Heart Dance. Think Bauer developed good sister stations like Kiss with Kisstory and Kiss Fresh and the Absolute’s so many.

Think the stations over at the Bauer stations lack being able to find radio content that is tailored to them.

I overall think even if the BBC Sounds apps dont have the visual streams and multi media content links other radio apps have the tailored recommend section that is personalised for individual listener and have different moods that can find or listening content from all BBC Radio outlets very cohesive.

I think it will be time that Bauer could end up playing catch up and other media outlets in the news media sector have yet to tap.

I could see Hits and should maybe get one or two big names from the radio industry and needs to be able to rival Radio 1, Capital and Heart better.

Feel Greatest Hits Radio may end up trying to pouch one or two additional names that are popular ‘celeb radio stars’ maybe get some adult contemporary tracks on presenter and some recent tracks of listener favourites like Diana Ross, Elton John, Rod Stewart.

Ideally i have Absolute Radio and Radio X develop some content that rivals specialist content of music on BBC surprised if Shaun Keaveny either returns to XFM rebranded as Radio X or Absolute having more new cutting edge experimental shows that play more nieche genres and break new artists is needed to keep competition exciting.

Wonder if could see more offerings in the talk radio sector a Bauer magazine type radio station or real podcast push if develop a cohesive ‘planet Radio’ app may be opportunity to offer a range of original podcasts relating to magazines they own and radio stations.

Could we see another newspaper or media outlet join in the talk radio wave outlet that owns Telegraph and Spectator, The Guardian could join in. But wonder if it will be the case if could have credible talk radio offerings that do non music comedy and entertainment or having Scotland or Wales wide commercial independent national stations like LBC, LBC News and Times Radio.

I mean think only maybe new things may see launch for BBC Radio 1 just minor changes of new playlist shows and podcasts of the bits overnight. Radio Paul Gamboccini could leave.

But I see the case that more or less the departures will be at BBC from BBC News department

    • The shows surely being driven for him so all he has to do is talk between the tracks and he can’t get even get that right
    • I thought the same to that comment, the license fee is going on me babes
    • What with Jamie Laing, now him. Is it time for a new Head of the station?
    • He also just said coming up we have brand new segment, I thought they were a band 🤣 how did this man get on Radio 1? Aled needs his head testing. It’s an insult people who deserve to be on the radio
    • Of all the times not mention capital it's probably now? Jordan is flying on breakfast with chris & sian and there's a presenter on friday and saturday that doesn't know who a main r1 artist, tldp are. Mentions capital which surely has to be a big no no given recent events and then says the licence fee goes to me. Talk about vom. We can't have it on here no more as it's that unlistenable and I'm about to switch back for m&m, but this is a Maya Jama x50 level mess of a show. Forget fading the microphone down, the entire show needs fading down
    • As positives go, at least Danny said what the last song played was and upcoming song played was. Plus I guess in that link are perhaps ideas for content (asking listeners to come up with bands from things around them, things that have happened to them this week). That's where's the positives end. It comes across as no thought has gone into what Danny will say next. It gives me proper flashbacks to some Jamie Laing links (especially that one show where he was unexpectedly solo). It's ironic that for all the duos and trios on the station - the one show and DJ that is positively crying out for another DJ to help show them the ropes is left all solo. At least with Jamie Laing they learnt their lesson and he's not been left solo since.
    • How he was just faded out at the end of the link reminded me of the Oscars music fading you out
    • RPReplay_Final1713612277.mp4   You’re welcome
    • At a time when Radio 1 has surely lost listeners to Capital at Breaktast you’d be trying to protect the station so people switch back.  Certainly yesterday I didn’t switch back to Radio 1 at all.
    • Was abysmal…Surely Danny can’t be a contender for anything permanent when the new schedules are locked in I.e Matt and Mollies slot
    • Alexandra Burke creating the phrase 'Elephant In The Room' whooooooooo
    • Zane Versus.... Whooooooooo. Do You Do Fridays? WhooOOOooo.
    • The Capital Breakfast show is right up my street so far - such a fun listen. You've both been great on Radio 1 and are sounding excellent again on Capital A few quickfire questions: You've both been part of some great pairings on radio and on podcast - what goes into making a duo or trio work and sound great on air? Also, Chris - were there ever any discussions about you moving over to Radio 2 with Scott or had the Global offer already come first? Also how do you both go about managing that split between your radio 'you' and the private 'you'? You share a lot on air but also there's some understandably some stuff you keep private (famously Jordan doesn't 'talk about those things'). And how do you make sure if you're having a miserable day or are a bit low that it doesn't come across too much on air?
    • What a nightmare link at 11.15am this morning. Spent 30 seconds waffling about the name of The Last Dinner Party as if he’d never heard it before, then started mentioning Capital and the license fee, and how it’s been used to pay for him to be there, and was then cut off by the start of the next song.
    • Have been reading this all week. She's such a brave woman. Just got to the chapter where she explains why she missed Scott's leaving event at Radio 1. She talks about leaving Radio 1 because her mum's health got worse, and wanting to quietly leave radio at 44 just how she first arrived on the airwaves at 18. Worth a read!
