Reminds me of when Chris Moyles kicked up a fuss because his Channel 5 show wasn't going to be named after him. He said it made it easier for him to be cut out of the equation, which eventually they did. Although I note after his Radio 1 stint, breakfast became 'Radio 1 Breakfast' and Grimmy was there for yonks, so means nothing...

Looking down the BBC Sounds schedule for Monday now, it literally leaves Ricky, Melvin & Charlie and Scott Mills as the only shows without Radio 1 in their title. 

(Newsbeat doesn’t either, but that’s a 1X & Asian simulcast)

Only others can think of Benji, Dean, Matt & Mollie, Tong, Howard. It’s interesting compared to Radio 2 and 6 Music even 1 Xtra there’s less of this do think if it’s some of the specialist shows would be better for less on Radio 1s or on Radio 1. I do feel that when it comes to some of the stuff on the schedule like Future Soul, Rock Show, Indie Show … should be promoted snd marketed to the listeners across Radio 1 Xtra/2/3/6 and in sounds in general

Was Breakfast called "The Radio one breakfast show with Sara Cox" before "The Chris Moyles Show"? 

 

also in Grimmys time it was "The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with" where as now it is "Radio 1 Breakfast" - although Greg always calls it "the Breakfast show" I wonder why?

The title is just... Dreadful! Call it "Going Home with Vick & Jordan" if they must, but the "..on Radio 1" is clunky and unnecessary. 13 syllables! 

I understand not calling it "Drivetime", as it sounds a bit 'local commercial radio' and not everyone drives, but not everyone's going home at that time either. I don't know what the answer is, but GHwVaJoR1 isn't it!

The new photos also look kinda cheap. As with some of the names, they're also inconsistent between different shows. It's just these little points that they surely has loads of meetings to discuss but still ended up being a bit naff and lacking polish.

It really bugs me that Greg does this - I know there are much better things to use my energy on, but I can't help it! He went through BBC Sounds earlier and still referred to it as "The Radio 1 Breakfast Show" even though the correct name "Radio 1 Breakfast with..." would've been right there! Either use its proper name or change it, I think "Radio 1 Breakfast" is better anyway.

Whilst I'm having a pointless rant, the shows that end "with [presenter]" sound so daft when the named presenter is off. Just put the name of the stand-in or leave it off. "Radio 1's Dance Party with Annie Mac with Danny Howard" is not good. (Not that that'll be back again ?).

Think with Radio Dance cover could be Friday Night Radio 1 Dance something generic for cover. Think if it’s Daytime with presenter who hasn’t got a show Lunchtime on Radio 1, Early Mornings on Radio 1 feel with most stations having reformed as X station’s breakfast show with X presenter works as it’s the headline show when cover simply X station breakfast. Think outside of that X station x show with isn’t always needed

Get that I felt it’s inaccurate with descriptions Jack Saunders, Katie Thistleton in for Jordan North pass few weeks when pretty much been filling the void think then descriptions should’ve been Katie presents Radio 1 weekend mid morning show filling the gap this summer something like that

Katie has her own show page so her shows have been put under the show name ‘Katie Thistleton’ not under ‘Jordan North.’ When Jack covered (and for that matter when Harpz covered Matt and Mollie as well) they put it under the show title ‘Jordan North’ but the episode was called ‘Jack Saunders in for Jordan North.’

It just a point on continuity when there’s a transition period think that it’s inaccurate for Jordan sitting in would’ve just called it Weekend Bruch on Radio 1 description X presenter keeping the seat warm for Deans arrival. Katie Thistleton has best hits and new music same for Jack Saunders or Harpz.

Most sure will be the sense of dun comes from a sense of evolution not repeating history to a state of boredom and losing interest @radio1fan feel like it’s going to be the most freshest and bssf quality drive time programming for some years Greg James did some of his best stuff on drive time in my opinion. Not hearing Jordan & Vick doing anything together before it’s going to be good listening. Looking forward to find out what their big signature features. As they are at the start of their daytime weekday radio 1 careers feel there’s going to be some strong bounce of quality. Looking forward to Future Soul and seeing what Clara does with future sounds which feel it’s going to be interesting whether she can bring a sense of energy and unique style that has been fixed for years.

Less than an hour in and I think they're onto a winner pairing these two up. Capital's loss is Radio 1's gain where Vick is concerned. And we still have Vick & Katie on Sundays which is always a good listen.

An hour in and it’s such a fun listen, Vick and Jordan have great chemistry, the links feel fresh and completely right for 2021, and there’s plenty of listener interaction. It’s a 10/10 from me. 

I definitely think they will be the next hosts of the breakfast show whenever that may be.

Grimmy's show seemed to be the home of the celebrity guests? Do you think that practice will continue on the new drive show? I've noticed there is a lot less reliance on celebrity guests, even pre covid.. instead favouring the 'Greg' approach of making the listeners star of the show

Think it was nice soft start to the Drivetime show like the way it’s easing into it. Guess for their first time on together didn’t want to overdrive it with too many features natural.

      Putting the music to one side, because I really am starting to feel like I'm ageing out of R1's playlist now... either that or it's just all a bit melancholic for my taste at the moment.  Greg is sounding fantastic and I would love to see him stay where he is for a while yet, Scott managed to stay sounding fresh at R1 until he was a few years older so no reason for Greg to move on because of age I don't think. RMC mid mornings, is a show I have never really got on board with.  I don't find them engaging sadly, even when the live lounge is going on. It feels a bit lost in chaos (not good chaos) and I really loved Katie in that timeslot when she was solo (possibly covering for Clara? I can't remember exactly). Katie can do both funny solo content, and genuine interest when it comes to Live Lounge stuff, so I would love to see her in this slot. Matt and Mollie are great where they are I think. The Breakfast Show for students, as Scott used to put it. Would love to see them stay where they are and hopefully be main cover for Breakfast because they are one of the slickest sounding pairs - and have a genuine friendship outside of work which they bring to the air. Going Home in general, for me hasn't felt stable since before Vick and Jordan. Grimmy was the last one who was a constant voice in that slot. It was a running joke when Vick and Jordan started that one of them wouldn't be there at least one day of the week. It's only become worse since Jordan left, and while that doesn't matter to me personally as I have become accustomed to just not knowing who is going to be there at that time - I am usually still working then, and for people who have more of a routine around that time, a consistent voice would be more suited. Like you have at other times of the day. If we kept Greg on Breakfast,  put Katie on the mid-morning slot (and Vick I guess would fit there), keep Matt & Mollie on afternoons, Sam & Danni would be perfect for the Going Home slot I think. And that would be a line-up I would happily not change the dial for all day. I appreciate that doesn't leave any space for Emil, who I enjoy listening to when I have heard him, but a permanent weekend slot for him maybe with cover in the week. And it's been so long since I was up early enough to listen to early breakfast that I can't really comment on that slot.  Is it too late to bring Scott and Chris back to R1 and have them part of the schedule? Because I miss their show every day even though it's been over 3 years!

      RMC next to go I agree - R&M to move on with Charlie staying on Dance and with radio 1 family. and then poss Dean. That could create an opening for Katie or Vick to share the love lounge slot and a new stable going home show?

      Good post. And yes sadly i can see some changes soon with the age of the weekday presenters probably becoming an issue. Shame really but it naturally happens to them all. Hope Greg beats Moyles record and gets 10years before he leaves.  As for Going Home the sooner they sort it the better but again they have been sounding good all.back together.  With regards to the age i think.RMC will be the first to be moved on will they leave all together or move to weekends?  Matt&Molly can see their for a good 5years at least.  Quite surprised that Jack Saunders and Sian are very young. Will they get a daytime slot?

      In the future on Radio1 I would like to see a more stable line up on Going Home I could maybe see Vick Hope leaving next unfortunately and I could he her being replaced by Lauren Layfield or Emil Franchi joining Katie & Jamie. It will probably be more like that Lauren Layfield will join them as they have previously worked together at cbbc and Emil will probably concentrate on more football content

      Even if the overall sound is mostly good, Radio 1 is in an odd place.  Their listening figures continue to be under pressure (especially when you remove the 10 to 16 (or is it 17) year olds and they have an ageing daytime line-up. (Age shouldn't matter but you can't be blind to the fact not a single Weekday Radio 1 daytime DJ is under 35). I'd be shocked if within 5 years it wasn't a very different looking station.

      I'm sort of in the position where I'm interested to see what comes next. Realistically in 2-3 years I can't see mid-mornings, Going Home and Breakfast all being the exact same line-ups as they are now. So it'll be interesting to see what happens and who ends up where. And these days you never know quite what to expect with Radio 1 changes and whether they'll go 'proper DJ' or 'influencer/celeb' route or a mix of both. Echo what you've said on 'Who's In The Box'. It takes up 4 half-hour slots a week so a fair chunk of time given Going Home is only 9 hours a week and doesn't feel a natural fit as a flagpole feature for the Drivetime show on a youth-focussed station like Radio 1. It more feels like a placeholder feature that they’ve never got to replacing really. The games that say Matt & Mollie do feel much more engaging for example.

      As for the the future... hopefully a bit of stability is brought to Going Home. It just feels like it's still in a temporary limbo post Jordan... two years on. It's good having a stable period for a while. Greg is sounding better than ever so I wouldn't mind him going on for a few more years. Mid mornings will probably get a refresh eventually, but for now RMC sound fine (i do think they've been wasted in the Live Lounge slot a bit, but i doubt they're going to move to another slot at this stage). Matt & Mollie are great, I don't think many would disagree. I think they will potentially be on afternoons for a few years now. They were wasted on weekend afternoons for too long. As for any potential future moves. I think Sam & Danni are future breakfast hosts.. whether that's via a weekday daytime slot.. who knows 🤷. I think they're doing good job on weekend afternoons and doing a few more years there will help them build up to take a weekday slot in future. I do enjoy James Cusack on weekend breakfast, and was happy when he got a permanent show, but realistically I'm not sure where else he could progress in the schedule (weekend afternoons maybe for a couple of years if Sam & Danni get to move up?).  I can definitely see Lauren Layfield getting a much bigger role in future. I don't think they signed her up to just do Life Hacks for her whole Radio 1 tenure. Radio 1 are lucky that they now have so many go to cover presenters (some better than others) who they can potentially look at getting on board full time in future. The one person who should be at the front of the queue for getting a permansnt gig is Emil Franchi.

      There's regulary a lot of chat about potential changes in the future on here and other forums so I thought I'd start a thread for anyone to input their thoughts on current Radio 1 output, any potential changes in future etc. As it stands.. I think the station overall is sounding good. Presenter wise, I think most people are in the right places. Going Home for me is the only let down on the schedule. It's not just the endless roulette of who's presenting with Katie, but i just don't think it's strong enough for what's meant to be the second biggest show on the network. One of the main features is 'Who's In The Box?'. When you compare it with content on the Breakfast Show and Matt & Mollie.. it's just nowhere near strong enough as a main feature. I know Jamie is apparently popular with the target audience, and he does seem a nice bloke but as well documented, he spends more time off air than he does on. For me personally, the strongest partnership i've heard on that show since Jordan quit is Katie and Emil.
