R1 didn’t get anything wrong - there’s a BBC royal obit protocol which surpasses any station-level decisions and applies to all BBC output. Nobody at R1 had any say in it.

It’s a bigger debate - is the BBC’s protocol in the public interest?

Yes and think it’s in the debate whether people see it as ‘impartial’ kinds of feeds into the politics of broadcasting it’s like when think of it when the Queen passes and ‘London Bridge Falls Down’ so to say that protocol will be enacted beyond BBC and British institutions like New Zealand wouldn’t be allowed to play any songs by Queen and their flags fly at half masts etc. Think it think goes into the constitutional politics and the politics of whether the BBC or Media is in broadcast bias for or against. Think the BBC obit mode for BBC Defunders, Anti monarchist Republicans, monarchists think aired views and things got bit heated because abonromal moments spark strong reaction.

Well on the day of course listeners weren’t as happy to have simulcasts and change of playlist but what it did. Was the words of the top brass the Director General and people who in charge of the board of the BBC made the calls assume so the Radio 1 and Pop Team Lorna nor Aled I’d imagine had say over any decisions just told to broadcast the audio news output then go to the somber emergency playlist.

Think it’s definately question in public interest but much of the general protocol can imagine are done for this stuff with Ofcom and under the BBC charter that the government and Parliament sign of and department of media has to deal with.

I totally agree, there’s no point slating Radio 1 because they weren’t in control. I think we all agree things got better once they were on the Saturday daytime.

It’s difficult to say RE the protocol, because the next time it will be even worse in terms of disrupting normal schedules, as it’ll be the Queen. I believe the BBC on TV can’t show comedy programmes until after her funeral, so will Radio 1 have to tone it down/ditch the entertainment until this point too?

Yes will be elongated but will imagine that they may not do as much at all playlisted stuff then could imagine day after when it comes to Parliament pledging elligence to the king and any statement from the Prime Minister or in that case any statements from King Charles the 3rd would likely to be broadcast across radio. Could imagine BBC One would do a lot of News for a few days bringing out Huw Edwards, Fiona Bruce.

Can imagine commercial stations like Heart FM, Capital, Kiss .. would be disrupted longer than what did for Duke Of Edinburgh

Fair point, I worded it badly. R1 management did nothing wrong as they were simply powerless. But I stand by my view that the BBC badly misjudged their plan for R1 and there was no need for the station to either simulcast news that afternoon nor stick with quite the music / tone it did after.

But anyway, I realise this has gone massively off-topic!! Perhaps one more thing to fix is Fridays. It would make sense to me in September to put RMC on Friday mornings (perhaps with a bit more of a 'weekend vibe' to their Friday show if they still want Fridays to stand out a bit). Given that Scott does the chart (and enjoys it) I'd leave Matt & Mollie on afternoons as they are, and at least then the 'Friday is the weekend' starts a little more logically in the afternoon...

I agree with the obit broadcast and would think some sort of Friday Entertianment mid morning show would be good as when Live Lounge month returns in future would like it not just new over four days, could’ve done stuff like club Charlie between 12:00-12:45 Fridays possibly then giving then Sarah Storey in that case Dance Anthems or a newer presenter if Charlie Hedges wouldn’t want to do a six Dayer

Do think if I was doing the BBC Radio for then would do at least Radio 1 Relax stuff for a short bit then. The point you made that I agree with

The one thing I would fix is for them to play all songs that are over 6 months old in full when played. This means more of less all the songs on Anthems (the show that's on between 10 and 11am) would be played in full rather then shortened. I can't stand Radio 1 Anthems as it is now. It really upsets me when they cut sort all these amazing throwbacks so I avoid Anthems like the plague. They are murdering the throwback tunes and I think that's absolutely dreadful. I think having them in the mix is alright but they shouldn't start cueing the next song into the mix until there's no more than 30 seconds left of the current song. Throwback Tunes Matter. They should NOT be cut short.

During anthems go back a little further in time. Rather than just do late 90s 00s some 10s rinse and repeat.

I think now and then do themed ones maybe stuff that was played less and stuff heard in specialist shows or just tracks don’t hear that often. They did go back further under ‘Greatest Hits’ when it started out in 2017 didn’t mind it too much then as Iiked the 3 hours then but still popular on BBC Sounds as downloaded and streamed but does feel like it’s tad bit tired

I agree on this too. I'm not a fan of the shortening and mixing of songs. When Greatest Hits first started 10-1, the songs were played in full. Radio 1 aren't fully against playing older tracks from the mid 90's and earlier, especially where dance music is concerned. The likes of Spice Girls and Oasis seem to get a regular look in on features like 10 minute takeover etc.

Goes without saying that younger people like older tracks, but as a CHR station, it'd be quite jarring if they went back further more often. Still, better than Capital who go back 5-6 years at most if they chuck in a non playlist track.

    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
