Annie Mac to leave Radio 1

End of an era with the departure of Annie Mac, but she has many fingers in many pies, so undoubtedly has a big future.

A lovely touch for her to ensure she told listeners on the radio before it came out. It sounds genuinely like her decision, she mentioned she'd been discussing it over the last year.

Who to replace her?

Now then, RM&C on that slot is a bit of a strange move. As it’s traditionally been a more music heavy show, but clearly not anymore with a trio at the helm.

Clara to Future Sounds makes the most sense! She covered it brilliantly last year. I presume Jack’s earlier show will continue as his does now & we’ve finally lost the more entertainment based evening slot after Charlie Sloth and RM&C?

Well that wasn't what we were all predicting! And seems likely now that Jordan is unlikely to move to Drive during 2021... It also debunks the theory that the recent cover presenter doesn't get the show, with both RMC and Clara covering their 'new' shows quite recently!

Am very surprised about RMC on mornings - as soon as I heard about Clara moving I figured it would be Vick, but I think it's a positive move to change the style of that show and give something different a chance...

Still poses a problem that Charlie Hedges is the only female in the daytime schedule if you discount early breakfast. Can't see her going solo now!

I assume RMC aren't up for a move to the north of England either...

Oh RMC on mornings. That’s a waste:(

It'll be interesting to see how the show develops. Perhaps the bosses envisage taking it in a new direction. It feels like that slot hasn't changed since the Jo Whiley days.

Congratulations to Clara, especially. I think this secures her long term future on R1. Nice that Sarah Story is joining too. Effectively going up against her old slot on Capital. She sounded good in for Annie. Danny Howard was always destined to be promoted to the start of the weekend. Well deserved.

I'm not a huge fan of RMC as a trio, their content (and currently playlist) doesn't appeal to me but they are good broadcasters. They suited that slot, doing a good job replacing Charlie Sloth. It's an odd choice for the 'live lounge slot',  I can only assume they've realised there's less demand for that type of show in the mid evenings, compared to more music heavy specialist content, which would deliver more value for money for the station and better appeal for listeners at that time. I actually prefer hearing R&M as a duo, and Charlie solo on Dance Anthems. Could it also be possible Vick Hope was considered but she has other commitments during the week she wants to keep? She could be in that slot within 3 years if she wanted it. RMC won't be in that slot long term, possibly.

There seems to be more slight cost cutting at play here too. 'Live programming' now ends yet again another hour earlier (could even be at 10pm, Power Down playlist being an hour long, is it worth having a live presenter on for that short amount of time each night, if it wasn't cuts related, surely they'd have introduced a 2 hour Power Down show.

Future Soul sounds interesting. If it means soul as a genre, it's not really something Radio 1 has touched on(at least in recent years. Two daytime shows changed presenter wise within a year (early breakfast and mid morning), so i think Greg, Scott & Grimmy are safe for a while yet.

Who ever predicted Annie Macs departure and Clara taking over the evening show plaudits to you not sure about Power down ten to eleven wouldve maybe occupied that at midnight. It’s going to be interesting to hear what Clara brings to the show as think she may add few features would be interesting to see RMC presenting the live lounge expect to make the mid mornings with a few more features interesting moves none of the less

Furthermore to my comments above about RMC, to me it feels very stop gap, a way to keep them in a prominent weekday slot, as evenings have clearly been shaken up to allow cuts at the later half of the evening. Although Future Artists following Future Sounds is a good move.

Well. That wasn't something I was expecting to happen! Makes sense for Clara to go to future sounds. Not sure about RMC moving to mornings though...

I think it’s going to be interesting as for most of the shows history it’s been presented by a solo presenter maybe there could more format changes with that but could Charlie add an odd mix to the show possibly

Agreed felt they could’ve extended future sounds or future artists or add another show that isnt so much chilled themed before midnight

    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
