Monday 26th April

Gemma Bradley co-hosts with Clara Amfo

Is Gemma Bradley's usual show pre-recorded? Because that's quite unusual for them to have her finish at 1am then be on again 9 hours later? Isn't that the reason why Dev and Alice were moved off weekend breakfast a few weeks ago.

Dev's situation was slightly different as in he was covering the 9-11 weeknight slot until they got a new host (RMC) - when he started covering they didn't know who would take the slot

This is one week only

I think they didn’t need to continue with the schedule changes as they have done I would say maybe yesterday done an half an hour Newsbeat or a short simulcast with Radio 4 for half an hour than extended bulletin later in day for at most half an hour and directed people to find on World Service or Radio 4 as think should’ve had chart on as usual kept usual Friday shows ditched 3pm party anthems and maybe kept Matt and Mollie on then for the duration of Friday after noon be willing to cross to Newsbeat reporter for any further think the station missed the interests of its audience

I do agree with you, but the BBC are held to a higher standard than commercial (heard about what happened when that newsreader for the death of the queen mother wore a burgundy tie). Capital have gone back to normal music though. The Anthem mixes would of been ditched as some of the songs might be found inappropriate and it is easier to ditch than search through it and add different songs in.

I assume probably 90 minutes show with mostly music not sure if she does read out text or tweets and feel it’s the thing that some content on bbc post 11 pm maybe pre recorded feel that’s possible for Radio 3s night tracks and of course some 6 Mu#ic content feel Radio 2 with OJ will be live think depends on type of music show

OJ is live on Radio 2 (well he was last night at least). Gemma might be live however Introducing isn't really an interactive show so I don't think she reads out any texts. Introducing on my local station goes out live on a Thursday night (I think?) but don't read any texts as I think it is also repeated on Saturday night.

I know they always have like a soft pop playlist in hand as back up as used for terror attacks previously but I know some was saying that there could be some offerings of escapism rather than thinking a light distraction from the news is distasteful as I understand of course why bbc would have taken some stuff of earlier in the day but should’ve resumed bit earlier in my opinion.

like anything like Have I Got News For You if Radio 4s News Quiz is scheduled would be bad taste or potentially could land in hot water but felt music stations could resumed bit more quicker. Do see it is difficult for news organisation but saw complaints in the drove and think it didn’t reflect what the listener would’ve wanted.

So it is a possilbity that it could often be pre recorded and possibly more so since Huw left

Yeah do agree. I didn't get why they had Radio 4 on for hours- switched to Capital and they were handling it well with news every 30 minutes and through the night (nice to hear some throwback tunes on there since the axe of The Capital Throwback.

Yeah it is. I don't get in my region (BBC Radio Newcastle) why at 6pm the presenter comes on to do Beat Surrender live (alternative classics show) then leaves at 8 for a repeat of the Thursday Introducing show. Sounds cheap.

I see what you mean when it’s a repeat and already on sounds anyway think in shows on local radio to avoid repeats I think sometimes listeners wouldn’t mind hearing a new band from their local patch outside of introducing every now and then.

Dunno whether they haunted capital throwback since heart sometimes ended up playing similar music in the hits or capital Xtra did but think on a Sunday or Saturday daytime it is something they could at least do more pop hits of this century something that doesn’t sound exactly like radio 1 anthems or heart radio some sort of what was on the big top 40

I completely agree with you on this! There simply was no need to simulcast R4 all the way until 4pm, and the instrumentals until 6.30 were again pointless. I am often a big defender of Radio 1 but I think they got this very wrong for their audience - pretty much 'enforced mourning' for that age group... Of course they should be sensitive and adjust the output, but for example as you say they could have done the chart but perhaps with a bit more subdued presentation to avoid accusations of insensitivity.

There was also a big opportunity to go more down the 'life hacks' route and connect with the audience in case they were feeling mournful. Back to back sad songs with minimal DJ interaction was entirely the wrong approach IMO.

Completely agree with the above. I think BBC News stations (4/5) can provide the extensive coverage but music stations should not have basically been shut down.

In my opinion, yesterday, Radio 1 should have taken BBC Radio 4 from 12:10-13:00. Then Matt & Mollie should taken over from 13:00-17:00 with chilled music (with lyrics though!)and a few links/general chat but no games/normal show content. Newsbeat updates should then have been every 30 mins throughout the day. I think it’s probs appropriate to suspend the chart as you can’t really control the content of it particularly well.

From 17:00-18:00 I would have had a Newsbeat Special and then from 6pm Scott Mills could have taken over with regular Newsbeat bulletins and chilled tunes through the evening (Danny then could have taken over through the night etc to continue the chill).

From 7am this morning Radio 1 should have returned to usual schedule but with no specialist shows throughout the weekend (The Official Chart should have replaced Dance Anthems).

From Monday Radio 1 should be back to normal.

I think the above better serves Radio 1’s young target audience as what they have currently is just making people turn off.

I completely agree here. Dance Anthems was a bit of a let down to be fair.

Biggest problem here is that the BBC is the state broadcaster for the UK. They didn’t air anything except news on TV last night, BBC One & Two showed the same. Four was suspended.

They have a duty to announce the news in a respectful way, hence the simulcast. Maybe Radio 1 should’ve gone back to music earlier, but even if they did it would’ve only been instrumentals for longer.

This has nothing to do with R1 management and would’ve been decisions made by the highest & the Beeb. From what I’ve read elsewhere today, these are plans that are in place way ahead of time. Stuff isn’t decided last minute.

I get all the “should’ve done this to connect with the audience” stuff, but as state broadcaster the BBC has to be very careful. Commercial radio did offer an alternative yesterday, even sans adverts, so people had options.

I understand this...and yeah these decisions are made right at the top of management. Doubt anyone had a say that actually works at Radio 1!

However, as a state broadcaster, surely (as we here all the time from the BBC themselves), there job is to provide something for everyone.

Some radio stations completely dedicated to the news and extensive coverage (BBC Radio 4, 5 Live) but other providing light entertainment (music stations)....then as there duty as a state broadcaster they still provide regular updates on the music stations (through Newsbeat etc).

The same could be said for BBC TV yesterday, why on earth they shut down BBC Four and simulcast BBC One, Two, News and Parliament I have no idea. BBC One should have focused on the news coverage and BBC Two should have provided light entertainment (quiz programmes, Attenborough docs or something).

Agreed think it’s also could’ve helped if sometimes address bad news days or the tone of news that feels quite alien in addressing that feeling. Mind you on certain days of begining of lockdown in the first and when they introduced a second or third and reached certain sad milestones could’ve done abit of life hacks like content maybe the odd phone in get intouch as I think BBC could seem more resourceful in using radio 1 for a blend of escapism but that companionship where in light hearted ways can have important conversations around well-being And mental health. As if there is something maybe sad in the news that young people are reacting to or stuff that is being discussed within the young age bracket could be brought in more in the station. I think like interms of music radio 1 could’ve had songs that feel up beat and when something seems to be that it been a difficult moment news wise sound play some songs listeners find up lifting and provide a more soft tone that the audinece like from their presenters

Yes felt that Radio should have resumed to usual much earlier as you said evening prime BBC Two should’ve been able to show entertainment formats like quiz shows or some cultural entertainment highlights. Think there was an issue with BBC Four off as was to air a woman’s football match as bbc on more secondary tier channels should be able to air. Felt would’ve been fair to cancel party anthems yesterday afternoon did a bit of light presenter work and play some soft pop and kind of work on engaging with listeners on how they find the kind of change in atmosphere. As would been good to have done more of a newsbeat special then had some sound links to say for more view on the BBC News channel or BBC R4. Chart could’ve aired slightly later. Today as Hitlist and quiz shows and entertainment resumed on the channels so should the usual programming as know R2 listeners would’ve missed not being able to listen to pick of the pops. Found myself flicking over to Capital Dance as they have presenters on air with upbeat dance.

Did see it was odd to not had rap show or 1 Xtra take over in usual format and Rock show cancelled think there will be an issue with extension of politicising the playlist and wrongly assuming the tone of the playlist that is needed as think people still want their choice and alternatives

Being careful as in the BBC is open to huge scrutiny in times like these. I suppose all media outlets are, but the BBC especially should be seen to do ‘do it right’ as the state broadcaster.

Broadcasting 1 programme across all BBC Radio left no room for errors. I can imagine the current Covid situation didn’t help things. Maybe the simulcast wouldn’t have lasted so long if staffing levels were at a normal level in the actual building.

This decision wasn’t made in the 10 minutes between the palace’s announcement & the simulcast starting. For whatever reason, this was the plan. We’ll probably never understand the reasoning, but this would be exactly the protocol that the top brass had in place for this type of announcement.

We haven’t seen anything yet. Things will last longer when the Queen passes. They won’t reverse decisions, it’d seem very weird to be more low key for the actual Monarch.

Sorry, still don't see it.  Radio 1 'does it right' when it enthuses about new music. That's what it was set up to do.  Certainly, the adverse 'scrutiny' it has attracted on this forum is due to it's failure to do that.

The Head Of State dying? - Sure, we'll all expect a significant shift of tone & emphasis, across all media.  But - the spouse of the Head Of State?? - A man who was NOTED (and, in the end, celebrated) for blurting out awkward things? -- The more you think about it, the less sense it makes ...........

    • Roman Kemp 😜 We don't know how Jordan is going to sounds on Capital.  It might not work as he will be restricted. Something that sounds good on paper doesn't always work out.  Not long ago Jordan was taking the micky out of Capital.  Can't do that now like he did at Radio 1 because the new place hate criticism.  I think Will was at radio 1 at one point wasn't he?
    • Hats off to Chris for leaving a challenge for Greg.  To plan that out was great detailing and proves what a talented guy he is.  The post he posted on Instagram also links into it which is great to.  There is loyalty to Greg there so I don't think he's joining Capital.  Persephonica was looking for an 'experienced entertainment producer' a few months ago. I wonder if this is where Chris might be heading?
    • Jordan North… Seriously though, out of the commercial stations I only really listen to Capital but I do think Will Manning is very strong (and could quite easily slot into R1). I also think Jimmy Hill is a very good commercial DJ (but probably wouldn’t be as good on R1).
    • First link made me blush
    • Who do you think is the best commercial presenter? This is your view, doesn't have to be who has the most ratings
    • Starting off strong.
    • I remember Chase and Status being added to the line-up for Coventry after a drop out. At the time it seemed a bit random, but they seem massive again now!
    • That is a bit strange, yes. Fair point. Oh yes, I'd say both are equal. It's just they'll have been on Instagram for some time, whereas TikTok will have been a new addition in recent years, so something probably has to give. Us anoraks like to see Twitter as important, but I find myself putting much more time into those other platforms. Incidentally when I applied for a social job there probably four years back (wasn't successful!) I did say I thought the audience wanted more insight from the station rather than just content around the stars. I think they've moved a lot more in that direction, especially with the visualisation in the studio. You see more of Greg James than Harry Styles. I don't envy the PR machine at Radio 1 going straight from Mollie King's challenge to Big Weekend announcements without a break!
    • Since they starting the big weekend right at the end of Matt & Mollie’s show I expect they get to do the duties of opening up the festival.
    • Matt and Mollie and Sam and Danni have DJ sets on Friday of Big Weekend, still makes me think they are really keen to push both pairings in a hole left by Jordan.
    • Broadcast wise it’s going to be interesting to see how they handle the performances starting at the same time as the chart show.
    • Yes sort of, although it’s still weird that they tweeted when Mollie was halfway completed but did not do so when she crossed the finish line.
    • it would make sense to ensure both instagram and TikTok are treated as equals and kept in tandem as reels and downloads of instagram are growing when TikTok I think I’ve heard is stagnating.    I mean it makes sense to do less with Twitter or X as it has change. There has been a lot of change in how its run and operate with focus on making it a platform people pay for and its been volatile for advertising with lots of loss in paid promotions on the platform and the business worth has been waining and any communications and marketing for any business and organisations are seeing that
    • I feel like all ATB songs started with some sort of airport in their video
