That was my thought too maybe taking over from Scott and Chris. As I think this will be their last year at radio 1 Scott is 45 after all

He's 47, and age is not that relevent, if the show he's putting out connects with the target audience.

I would agree Scot is still very much revlant today. He could go on for years to come.  The day he doesn't get meme, doesn't get something and become unrevleavt, is the time he needs to leave.

Yea I had a thought after I posted Annie nigjtangle is in her 80s and Pete tong Is 60 so I spouse age doesn’t matter really

Very much so, Age is just a number. those are still at the top of there game and attracting the audience

I could see Annie leaving to focus on family. Could move Jack up in to that slot with his future artists in a prime time slot? I think I’d  push RMC back to a 10PM slot. Maybe you could slot Clara into that 8-10PM slot. And move Vick(with Katie) to mid mornings and hire someone new (An Xmas presenter?) to take over Life Hacks/Chart first look.

I'd have Clara 6-8pm, Jack 8-10pm and RMC 10pm-Midnight.

I’d be more radical with schedule and put The future Sounds with Jack Saunders in the 9-11 AM slot ending breakfast early then followed likely by Katiie and Vick doing a Groupchat type of show with some of newsbear team contributing and bringing 1 Xtra Talks into that show.

Psrosnally think yes Annie has her family but much work driven in same way male and female people in the radio industry are can see her potentially could do 6 Music as think she would work well with that audience if did an electronic show or covered for Mary Anne Hobbs or Lauren Laverne seems like it’s definatley more tailored to a younger audience. Would like to see Absolute and Radio X reaching that quality of sound and diversity in playlist. She seems to be focusing on doing stuff like Podcasting and Writing and interested in doing more writing show can see it as a more of change in career direction as I think that think it’s that wanting try something different

I’d think I’d segment life hacks into a new conversation show with of course mix of music in the weekday daytime show can focus on different things like lifestyle, mental health, work life, school tips, chats with celebrity and also report on listeners issues of interests snd bring some of reporting of stories covered in newsbeat in to have chats with the journalists especially if they may have done certain entertainment stokes or some BBC News and current affairs issues that affect young people width also bringing Ali Plumbs film Reviews and maybe getting Scott Bryan from 5 Live to do a bite size moustache watch of stuff on streaming services to watch think for sunday would want too maybe move Rock Show to a 2 AM to 4 AM slot and able to bring introducing show to an earlier time and maybe create a Sunday request show again and move chillest show to late Sunday like back between 10 to 1 am or 11 to 1 am

also think with the different chilled shows across the bbc radio stations could create a feed of its own on like R1 Dance

Quite. There have been quite a few young presenters who couldn't pull in an audience on Radio 1

Yes I think that’s why some cover presenters they may try out May not do that much on the station like I remember someone called Luke Franks who did a podcast for radio 1 with arrielle as part of kench comedy feed called worst dates felt he sounded like a cheesy DJ at weddings funerals bar mitzvah christenings divorce parties etc think there are a few that just don’t land good suprising that they haven’t trialed getting people who present podcasts to present in covers but think the idea of using the Christmas cover entrants good idea

That will never happen. The station's primary aim is to appeal to a broad audience (within the defined age range), and daytimes will reflect that. Not even sure that the core audience for 'future sounds' would have any interest at listening at 9am. I could see Vick and Katie on Clara's slot incorporating a very few small 'life hacks' type segments but it would be in the context of the mainstream show and definitely wouldn't be speech-heavy.

Arguably your suggestion is more radical than the early days of the Bannister shake-up in the 90s, at a time when the station is in very good shape with a clear direction already!

It's also assuming Vick and/or Katie want a more prominent spot. They both do a fair bit of work away from Radio 1.

Granted, Radio 1 evolves with it's audience and part of that will involve an eventual shake up of weekday daytimes. However, in the time Aled has been in charge.. he has already made some radical changes to the schedule. The only really missing link at the moment, which i'm surprised they haven't announced to implement soon is Jordan moving to drive, which is likely as question of when, not if.

I’d think they’d be open to it as would be a boost in their careers when you think about it Annie Mac does a daily weekdays slot and picks up different projects so do Rickie and Melvin same for Roman Kemp on Capital Matt Edmonson does a fair bit on the station and has other tv production work and quite a few weekday radio two presenters do other work like Zoe does stuff like it’s takes two and Sara Cox presents different stuff. Think if the contract is good and it would be something I think Vick and Katie are interested in after all Salford would be also where a lot of work stuff would be for the in televison etc. Honestly do think there needs to be others prioritised over Jordan North, he’s good but need someone bit fresh and actually drive time deserves a different sound or voice. I’d put people like Sian Eleri, Yasmin Evans, Snoochie Shy, Reece Parkinson, Jeremiah Asiamah, Gemma Bradley. Think soon really it should be the case Jordan could do afternoons if a shake up comes and also boot Greg James of the station to cut on costs.

I do feel that radio one isn’t on the mark for the audience it appeals to and is becoming far to commercialised for a state run public service broadcasting youth station it shouldn’t purely centred around going for the mainstream stuff that Kiss Capital and the others up to. I do feel like its focus should be on delivering quality over assuming what they’d listeners wants as do feel it’s more or less centred around the older 30 somethings and less the 13-30 mark it should be if it wants to seem better at doing radio can’t assume it can do the same and get away with at a time when the BBC needs to justify itself its focus should be appealing to people who are primarily focus on finding new music new quality conversation that is resourceful focusing on mental health and other issues face young people also championing new talent whether be comedians artists and presenters by means of social media. After all BBC needs to be centred of what is public service broadcasting in the digital age which Radio 1 aren’t hitting the mark

Why boot off a highly successful breakfast presenter? And clearly Jordan is head and shoulders above those others you list.

You seem to be trying to fix something that isn't broken.

Its matter of giving other presenters a chance and not much of the same and find since Greg James has moved to breakfast to commercial and cheesy sounding and would be really time that breakfast show sounded different. As the station is playing it safe

I guess we can agree to disagree ? I think the station is stronger than it's been for a long time, no need to shake things up. I guess if I could choose my own change, I'd inject some more / longer links in daytime but that's all. Admittedly that goes against the recent trend so I find it unlikely.

Certainly it's never been the case that the station evolves purely to 'give presenters a chance'. For sure I'd love to see Jordan on drive, but other than that I hope no other major changes in 2021... Trying out some new presenters over Christmas / Easter is good too, but no need to go further.

Your point about making the station less-commercialised would unfortunately backfire, in that listener figures would plummet and the argument to keep the station would be hard to justify.

I think it’s tough time to justify it I don’t see how making it mainstream and commercialised it’s doing that I think like what has seen with Radio 2 of late the station over there is loosing touch with its current demographic. I think the BBC is currently struggling don’t see how making it like their rivals helps. Just feel like the station in terms of voices and diversity on the station it needs to provide a better service that reflects what Zillenials and Generation Z want from a public service broadcaster at a time when the broadcaster isn’t justifying itself clearly to the public. When you think with salaried being published, new stations opening, new rules around working locations snd what the corporation would want the presenters use their platform for is a hard task. Personally think I’d end up putting Jordan Notth in a later night slot to trial bringing something of what Phil snd Alice, Nick Grimshaw and Colin Murray did in a late time slot to maybe warm up for doing breakfast or Scott Mills’ slot. Just feeling that radio one is now directed to a person more and more in their mid thirties when Radio 2 uniquely is closing in on that gap.

Feel the point to having a public service broadcaster interms of entertainment needs to be smaller than what it is to make it more cost effective and shouldn’t be about chasing the ratings should lead that to private sector commercial radio it’s primary service should be public service broadcasting

Radios 1 and 2 still sound nothing like their commercial rivals. It's a fine line between being 'appealing' and 'overly commercial sounding' and I think today they are the right side of the line. Radios 1 and 2 are also VERY different from one another, yes there are some playlist overlaps but the presenter style, station sound and overall feel are poles apart.

Anyway such radical changes won't happen, and I for one am glad ?

    • Less so with 5 Live. But with Nihal, Nicky Campbell and Mark Chapman get what you are saying.6 Music does have that with Huw Stephens, Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Marc Riley and Mark Radcliffe
    • Agreed, Martha seems to quietly taken over as host of the Tuesday Bass and Big Beats show that Annie Nightingale did would be good to have some promotion to be done for her show. Agreed with this on bank holidays on a Radio 1 dance day inpaticular would be quite good to have Sarah Storey, Jaguar, Jeremiah Asiamah, Charlie Tee and Martha presenting. I always felt that in Christmas and New Year previously having Victoria Jane to do a Future Soul take over playlist.
    • To be fair to him, this week and next week he’s on his podcast tour which was arranged well before he started on R1. After that I would guess he’ll start being on everyday?
    • It’s Jamie’s dream of a lifetime to be a full time Radio 1 presenter apparently, but he can only do it 2 or 3 days a week.
    • Radio 1 generation meaning??  Today's 10-30 yr-olds? I doubt it. They'll still know Pete Tong though, because he is rhyming slang!
    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock. 6th May schedule has updated to show that the Radio 1 Big Weekend Shows will now be the following: 6am-10am 10am-2pm 2pm-6pm 6pm-8pm Still no presenters listed.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
