Radio 1's Lolathon 2021

It's been an impressive two days of content on Radio 1 bringing out the absolute best of the station and the presenters. As well as breaking previous records and raising an incredible amount for Comic Relief, it's reminded us how impressive Radio 1 is.

I've particularly loved that lockdown has meant I could listen for longer, and during the day, and thought that it took real creativity to shake-up the format this year.

My only gripe is I feel it missed a massive opportunity with live video and social. Of course social distancing to an extent gets in the way, but given they're drip feeding content out it feels it could have been done.

I couldn't help wanting to see more behind-the-scenes of what was going on as it was broadcast. The Matt Edmondson life drawing, the Naked Attraction stuff, when they were telling jokes to big boss Lorna. The glimpses we got came from the presenters' social media, who were trying to juggle numerous things at once.

Moreover the content stopped outside working hours, so there was a gap until the breakfast show when no-one was around to keep it going.

I sometimes wonder if I'm just in a minority because I'm a hardcore listener, but there was clearly appetite from Chris' Instagram Live last night.

Hopefully if there's any more events like this it'll be considered.

I thought it was going to be canceled this year, but so happy they managed to do it after all. I was listening live but missed a lot, I'm slowly catching up on Sounds, about halfway through now. I liked the new format and that they dropped the "we always have to tell jokes between songs" rule, it wouldn't have been funny for the third time.

I agree on the video stream. When R1 did the Longest Show (10 years ago today!) they did have a non-stop video stream right on the R1 main page, seeing everything that happened in the studio added so much to the experience.

Also every time I hear The Business from now on I will think of "Cranky Scott Mills" close to the 24 hour mark. :D

I remember finding the Chris moyles thing on YouTube someone clipped it up on a YouTube channel and completed it over couple of weeks a length of a box set I was surprised not to hear the jokes. But agreed it would’ve been exhausted if did again think Scott would’ve felt the same. However felt they needed less music what they came up with after some people leaving through the pandemic and less people working was good would’ve loved to hear more from comedians. Think would’ve been good if did something like Evil Genius or Wheel of Misfortune takeover or done a new tap end and revived from onetime some stuff they did on the Kench comedy podcast a couple year ago

I fell way behind on listening to the podcasts (by going back to ones from the Beccy and Chappers days for a while), and was dismayed to see that I missed the Lolathon, and that it wasn't available in podcast form like last time.  I really appreciate the efforts of SamChisholm  and Electric Boogaloo and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of the late night segments.  I loved the ones they did in the past.

    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
    • They knew Roman wanted to leave early last year but wasn't officially announced but he gave them time to sort replacement. Found and offered Jordan a deal in June or July and needed time to get Jordan out of Contract at bbc and roman to do notice  Jordan had dinner with Katie Vick and Arielle to ask advice and all said he should go.
    • And they told Radio 4’s Feedback that it was an ‘experiment’ to ‘look at the best way to serve young listeners’ but reaffirmed that 280 hours commitment.
    • I doubt he wanted to go to Global if a slot before he found out kemp was leaving.
    • We're hoping to get some answers in the coming weeks
    • From what he's saying on the Pod he's been trying to get out of r1 for a while. Looks like he needed to wait for a show on global to be available. Jordan had bbq last summer with most of thr global execs and he's referenced the deal was in place then. Obviously the hold up was r1 being stubborn
    • All seems to be back to normal this morning.
    • Indeed and Jordan was already friends with Sian Welby, Will Manning and Jimmy Hill.
    • It's great to see those friendships still thriving. I think the days of Radio 1 DJs and Capital DJs being unable to co-exist is long over. You used to either be firmly BBC or commercial, and you don't get the sense that's the case anymore.
    • Maia Beth will be presenting the Radio 1 Happy shows from the 27th April replacing Katie.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001ydkr
    • Vick and Jordan together on Insta (with Ariel’s) in Ibiza. You do imagine Jordan’s ex colleagues have a very different attitude to him than management. Comments on Help! And very subtle comments on Capital Breakfast suggest Jordan was frustrated with Radio 1 / BBC management.
    • I can name quite a few people on this forum who would be better presenters than Danny.
    • His NYE shows were very good. Only thing I would say is he was shackled down slightly there. During his peak he played some great trance stuff in the late 90s and early 00s. So if he were to do a regular show that would have to feature more. Aside from I'd love to see him back.
